Crazy, Reckless, Vengeful Game: A Gotham Audio drama (DEMO REEL)

Project Overview

A short demo reel for an audio drama based upon select Batman characters from DC Comics. This is, admittedly, a passion project of mine. Originally conceived as a four-part small-screen miniseries, I am now interested in seeing if the project might translate suitably to audio production. It should be said, for all intents and purposes, that the chances of this going on to a full-scale production are slim. But as Bruce Wayne himself once said, "everything's impossible until somebody does it."

SYNOPSIS: When a strange, disturbed man with pale, white skin washes up on the side of the Gotham River with no recollection of who he is or how he got there, he embarks on a journey of attempting to rediscover who he was and reconnect with his humanity. Simultaneously, Bruce Wayne, newly returned to Gotham after a five-year stint in Europe, learns to channel and cope with the continued trauma and rage associated with his parents' murder. Listeners hear the two intertwining stories of Bruce Wayne finding evermore problematic ways to express his vengeance, with the reluctant help of his butler, Alfred, and the pale man, "Jon", trying desperately to cling to his sanity in this character-driven psychological exploration of the men who become the World's Greatest Detective and the Clown Prince of Crime.

This project contains strong language and depictions of violence.

Talent must have access to a quiet space and a USB/XLR microphone. Auditions recorded on phones will not be considered. Talent will receive a copy of the finished reel.

Though this is a more grounded, character-driven piece and not as much of a "comic book action" sort of thing, please remember to have fun with this! I'm really interested in hearing new and exciting interpretations of these characters that are completely and entirely your own. Get creative and be original!

Hi everyone! Firstly, allow me to relay my sincerest apologies for my absence regarding this project. Some family matters required my attention these past few weeks and I was unable to finalize casting until recently. Thank you so much to everyone who auditioned on this platform! your auditions were absolutely wonderful and I enjoyed listening to every one! For this project, I've decided to go with off-site actors, but I am more than inspired by the amount of incredible talent I have seen in your applications and will certainly keep them in mind for future projects. Thank you so much for your time and talent!

An angry young man with something dark inside him, creeping closer to bursting out with each passing day. Prone to violent outbursts. On the search for a vocation.

All below dialogue is directed at Alfred.

  • Wayne Enterprises-- I don't wanna hear anything about that stupid company. I hate that thing, keep it away from me.

  • You told me I needed a vocation. Then you started teaching me how to fight. And now you're trying to get me to work some office job? That's the vocation you want for me?!

  • Oh, so you're some kind of psychiatrist now? What, did you get trained at Arkham Mental Hospital while I was gone? This isn't a fucking therapy session! The point is that criminals in Gotham get off too damn easy! The cops don't care! People can get away with whatever they want!

A deeply disturbed man on the younger side who has no recollection of who he is or how his entire body became pale white. Naturally cynical. Distant mentally. Struggling to find his humanity, but inescapably inhuman. Did whatever happened to him do this, or was he always like this?

Two things to consider when auditioning for this role:

1. I am not looking for a "comic book-y" interpretation of this character, but rather a grounded, more real rendition. Try not to do Mark Hamill or Heath Ledger impressions. Give me your take of this character!

2. If you are willing and able, it would be lovely if you could attempt a creepy sort of laugh in addition to the dialogue. Feel free to make it subtle or more on the louder side, as this character does have multiple laughs of varying intensity throughout the script. If you do not feel comfortable with this, it is absolutely NOT a requirement and will not affect your consideration whatsoever.

  • (To BENTLEY) Listen, I can't thank you enough for putting me up these past three days. It's so hard to find good friends these days. I mean, I wouldn't remember, but I heard someone say something like that on tv.

  • It's funny... how society treats people who are different like trash, y'know? They kick us while we're down, then turn away from us and act like we don't exist... no one cares until someone goes crazy. And the funniest part... no matter how painful it is, you monsters just laugh at me. You laugh now... wait'll I become something worse...

  • All this time I've been trying to remember who I was. Stay human. But, now I'm kind of thinking... fuck it. Heh. How's that for a one-liner?

The Wayne family butler and a sort of surrogate father to Bruce, though Bruce refuses to acknowledge this. Never afraid to tell Bruce what he doesn't want to hear. Calm, collected, and damn smart. Loves Bruce deeply, is only hard on him because he fears for his well-being. When formulating your interpretation of this character, think clever-yet-weathered war-veteran rather than loyal butler.

All below dialogue is directed at Bruce.

  • I fucking raised you, Bruce. You may think you're some hardened brawler, but to me, you're still that boy running in from the night because he thought he saw a bat.

  • We fought for all of thirty seconds. And if I had been one of those street thugs, you'd already have a bullet in the brain. You've got a better head on your shoulders than to do what you did tonight. You want to talk about divine mercy? Those three thugs didn't kill you. That's mercy, Bruce. You don't want to die... but, you do want to do something about certain things. I don't know what that means yet, and I don't think you do either, but maybe that's what we need to find.

  • I will never approve of what you're working towards. But I know I can't stop you. So, if you're going to do this, you will not do it by being a pugilist, but by being a detective. And if you don't want to get killed most arrogantly, you need to study up.

A good samaritan that fishes Jon out of the Gotham River. Warms up to Jon, despite his initial oddities. As the story progresses, he slowly realizes that it would've been better to leave Jon in the river. Bentley is an original character.

All below dialogue is directed at Jon.

  • Well... don't take this the wrong way, but I was thinking, because of your, uh, unique complexion that maybe you could take up some kind of career in comedy. Like as a comedian or a clown. I mean, It's not just white, it's like clown white, you know? Chalky white. You'd be great.

  • Look, it's been great having you here, and I've been more than happy to help you get your bearings and get back on your feet, but I really think it might sort of be time for you to get back out there. You know, see what you can do about getting your memory back.

  • Look, I'm gonna level with you, Jon, I can't put you up here forever. We've been able to keep a low profile these past few days, but my landlord doesn't know you're here. And if she found out...

A young woman who works the front desk at the Financial Branch of Wayne Industries.

All below dialogue is directed at Bruce.

  • Hello, welcome to Wayne Financial, do you have an appointment with one of our-- (Looks up, realizes she's speaking with Bruce Wayne) Oh-- oh my God-- is it really-- Mr. Wayne? We-- we'd heard you came back from Europe, but we didn't know if you'd be coming back, y'know... here. If I'd have known, I would have of course prepared everyone for your arrival.

  • Wayne Financial helps to support many essential community resources with the funding they require to continue running as best as possible. Elliot Memorial Hospital, Pinkney Orphanage, and Gotham Homeless Shelter, just to name a few.

  • You need to understand that the way this company operates perpetuates the criminal culture that runs rampant in Gotham. You want to make the word justice mean something again, Bruce? Consider cleaning out your company. I believe in what the Wayne Industries symbol stands for. And I believe that this company will come back around to what it stands for someday. Your father understood, Bruce. The thing about symbols. They're untouchable.

  • What's the matter, man, you drunk or somethin'?

  • Is it true you ran with a tough crowd, Mr. Wayne? You barely got out of that, didn't you? Weren't you in jail?

  • Hey, where you going, clown boy?
