Bitter Sweet: Episode 1

Bitter Sweet: Episode 1

Project Overview

Story Description:

Famous fantasy-adventure author, Jonathan Murdock has been struggling to coming up with a new idea for his next novel. In order to spark creativity, he and his childhood friend/manager, Shelby, decide to recruit a co-author. Despite some personality quirks, Dani Carson, a young fanfiction writer, stands out as the only suitable candidate to work with Jonathan. However the two seemingly opposite writers have to learn to work past each others differences as old scars and wounds resurface.

Project Description:

Bitter Sweet will be a long-term episodic audio drama. The two main characters have already been cast but there will be several reoccurring characters throughout the course of this series. This casting call will only be for characters that appear in episode one. For later episodes there will be more casting calls down the road as more characters appear in the story.

This is a story that deals with a lot of mental health issues so while it's mostly a comedy, there will be some darker themes touching on anxiety, depression, abusive relationships, self-esteem issues, and trauma.

Bitter Sweet has 14 episodes planned out for one season. These will be released episodically to YouTube. Visuals may be added later, but since we are a small team, it will be released as audio only for now.

Good quality audio is highly recommended for higher chance of getting cast. If cast, it would be preferable if you have Discord in order to join the Bitter Sweet Discord for easier communication and updates.

Role: Supporting

Shelby is Jonathan’s best friend and manager, a stalwart presence in his life since childhood. She is confident, outspoken, and sometimes bossy, but her assertiveness comes from a deep concern for those she cares about. Shelby has always been there for Jonathan, supporting him through thick and thin. She believes in his talent as a writer and genuinely wants the best for him. This character needs to balance a caring, supportive nature with a practical, no-nonsense attitude.

Shelby often interacts with Jonathan with a mix of sarcasm, genuine concern, and playful teasing. She is seen organizing his schedule, reviewing his work, or simply offering a listening ear. Her actions should reflect her dual role as both a friend and a manager, seamlessly blending professionalism with personal care.

Direction for Shelby:

Tone: Assertive yet caring, with the ability to switch between sarcasm, gentleness, and humor

Emotion: Show deep concern and unwavering support, mixed with a touch of exasperation and playful teasing

Body Language: Confident and direct, with moments of tender concern and lightheartedness

Shelby usually makes at least one appearance in each episode so this is a permanent role.

  • (Sarcastically muttering to self) Yeah, 'cause what could go wrong, showing up at a young woman’s house... in the middle of the night... unannounced.

  • (Disappointed but heartfelt)There are so many writers and authors that look up to you for your groundbreaking novels, but this just isn't what we're looking for.

  • Look, I know you've been going through a lot these days. It might be a good idea to take a break. Get out of the city and clear your head a bit.

  • I think getting a new perspective will help you though. Give it some thought, okay Jonathan?

  • (Berating young Jonathan) You really think you can be a successful writer? Like anyone would read the garbage you write, let alone pay for it. Just face it, you don't have the intelligence for it.
