Audiobook: The Unusuals––Chapter 1

Audiobook: The Unusuals––Chapter 1

Project Overview

This project is first and foremost a gift for my friend. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously. I'd like to put together one chapter of material, but possibly more chapters in the future.

My friend is an author, and the roles are for several characters in her soon-to-be-published book, The Unusuals. It's in the magic realism genre, kind of like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, but the characters are a little older (16 and 17 years).

The plan is to have it be like an audiobook, but one step ahead, almost like listening to a movie version! I'll try and explain this the best I can: There won't be any visual effects, but there will be both voices and sound effects (such as people talking in the background, since they're at school; chairs scraping; etc.) But I will supply the sound effects. All you guys need to worry about is the voices (and the occasional extra noise, like clearing your throat or something).

I'm so excited to get started on this, and for those of you who end up participating, I will of course send you the finished product. My friend will no doubt be in happy tears when I show it to her (which I will update you on). :)

Please have a good mic with minimal background noise. If you end up with the role, I will send you the entire chapter along with your script so that you will have context while recording your part.

Also (IMPORTANT) this is slightly different than voice acting for a cartoon or something because the voices don't need to be dramatic. Honestly, act as though you are in a conversation with your friend; be realistic (not monotone) but not all over the place (like anime lol).

Thank you so much to everyone who tries out!

  • Update––You're All Amazing

It hasn't even been twenty-four hours and there are 16 amazing auditions. I have no idea how I will be able to choose in the end! This is just an update to say thank you so much for all of these auditions and I am more excited than ever to hear the ones I will receive over the course of this month!

Daniel is pretty easy going. He highly approves of Jack's massive crush on Blythe, and eggs him on whenever Blythe is around. Just a normal guy. Up for interpretation. I mean, all these characters are basically up for interpretation, but I don't have a set idea for Daniel's voice. Just try whatever voice you think would best suit him.

  • (Reading a poster): 'Please donate to support victims of the Boyle Fire.'

(Asking Jack): Do you think that’s actually what the money’s going to?

  • (Sees Blythe, then says to Jack): Dude. Look over there.

  • Hey, I’m not the obsessed one. I don’t know what Jack's excuse is, though.

Beau is similar to Blythe in that he has an aura of independance and maturity, but he acts less friendly/casual and more reserved. While Daniel highly encourages Jack's crush, Beau keeps Jack from making a fool of himself in front of her. He's best friends with Daniel and Jack. He's a take-charge kind of guy, but his own inclination to fix messes sometimes annoys him. He's not shy, but not outgoing: just reserved. Logical. Can be very sarcastic. Do with his voice what you will.

Note: Beau's voice should be deeper than Daniel's or Jack's. Not "deep", per se. Just a lower voice on the normal teen guy voice spectrum.

  • (Talking to Jack about Blythe): We used to have family friends in that neighborhood, and I’d see her down there sometimes. Always tailed by a group of gorgeous friends. I’ve never seen them at Tam. Maybe someone’s running a modeling agency down there.

  • (Talking about one of Jack's drawings. Casual, but slightly unnerved): Did you use a reference for this one? I feel like I’ve seen it before.

  • (Casual): Jack, you all right? (Starting to get more worried): Hey. Jack, you okay? Hey! Can you hear me?

Jack has been practically in love with Blythe for seven years, but it's a one-sided thing, like a bad crush. So that needs to show in his voice whenever she's nearby (he gets really nervous and it's harder for him to form words). He often has vivid, strange dreams, and he draws what he sees in them, but he doesn't tell anyone that's where his art inspiration comes from. His voice shouldn't be as laid back as Daniel's, maybe slightly more tense or pessimistic. Decide for yourself!

Note: Magical, ominous things happen at the end, so you'll need to be comfortable with acting panicked and briefly shouting.

  • You know, Daniel, Chem is hard, so at least you have an excuse. I’m going to fail /art/. I can never finish anything.

  • (Talking to Blythe): Um, yes. I did draw that. Thank you.

  • (Breathing heavily, panicked.): What's happening? What...?

Blythe is cool and collected, and a lone wolf, so I imagine her with a pretty smooth and lowish voice, almost a mature voice. She knows how to slip into conversation in order to collect information. She has a lot of secrets. She's also a bit of a badass, but no one knows that yet.

Other notes: 16 years old. Jack has had an enormous crush on her for half his life––if she knows this, she acts indifferently to it. She is the first one in the book to know about anything magical (which she already knows about during chapter 1).

  • I have a friend who moved here recently from Wales. The part of Wales where they actually speak Welsh. His English is good, but I think it’d be better if he met someone who spoke his native language. You know Emily Hart? I think she’s in drama. She mentioned that you might speak Welsh.

  • Beau, did you draw that? (not incredulous, just a way to engage in conversation)

  • Is that a birthmark? Hm. Oh. Sorry, that was rude. I know someone who has one just like it.
