Jake is a brave and responsible kid who is unanimously placed in charge of the Animorphs by the rest of the group. He did not ask for the position but he assumed it anyway because somebody had to and because he wished to save his brother from the Yeerks. He is good at issuing orders without sounding bossy and is usually cool under pressure, but he constantly worries about how his decisions could potentially get himself and his friends killed.
I'm not asking anyone else to go with me. But I don't have a choice. I heard that scream today. And I know Tom is going down there tonight. He's my brother. I have to try and save him.
I... look, we can only handle so many things at once, okay? Right now the leaders of the most powerful nations on Earth are being targeted by the Yeerks. I feel the clock ticking. I know your life sucks, okay? But I can't figure that out right now. Later. After this mission is over.
I don't think you understand what this means. We’re talking real battle. Real war. Pain and blood and even death. Spilled guts and severed limbs and psychological horror you won't ever get past. This isn't a trip to a theme park. It's not TV or some video game. It's an appointment with a seriously grim reality.
Rachel is smart, confident and very bold, with a massive addiction to shopping. But after the war with the Yeerks begins she becomes increasingly violent and aggressive and is the only one that actually enjoys the fight. This scares her a great deal on the inside, making her and everyone around her worry about what she may eventually become if her love of battle continues to increase, but she rarely shares those feelings and is the Animorph most called upon when they need to do something reckless.
The only thing we have going for us is this animal morphing thing. And so far the only morphs we've acquired are a cat, a bird, a dog, a horse, and a lizard. I think we need a little more firepower.
Please say you've come to rescue me from this place, Tobias. I've done nothing here but baby-sit my sisters and listen to my mother grouse about unsanitary bathroom conditions. Tell me you need my help. Tell me you're planning some senseless, suicidal mission. Tell me you can't pull it off without me.
What did you expect me to do to David? Did you think I was going to kill him? Did you? Is that why you let me go after him? Is that why you sent Ax for me? Because you think I'm some kind of violent nut you can call in whenever you need some dirty work done?
At the start of the series, Tobias is a somewhat meek and quiet boy who is constantly bullied at school, but he found meaning in the war with the Yeerks and shortly after gaining the ability to morph he was permanently trapped in the form of a red-tailed hawk. After this he becomes much tougher as he has to survive in the wild, but his identity is constantly in crisis as he struggles between his caring human mind and his ruthless hawk instincts.
That's when there's warm air rising up from the ground. It forms this cushion under your wings. You can just float up there. Like a mile up! You just surf the thermals. You guys have got to do it! It is the best thing ever.
Ax? You know how I was just talking about knowing things I couldn't possibly know? It just happened again. Just now. There are like a dozen Taxxons coming this way. Somehow they can smell the Hork-Bajir. Like bloodhounds.
I think I'm losing myself. Today the hawk we freed... she was there. At the lake. I wanted to go with her. I felt like I belonged with her. Rachel... I don't even remember what I looked like.
Cassie is a kind animal lover who helps her parents out with their veterinary practice. She is the most compassionate member of the Animorphs, becoming both their heart and their conscience, and can often see when people are trying to hide their true feelings and comforts them accordingly. But the realities of war are extremely tough on her and she is forced to confront how far she may or may not be willing to go to compromise her own morals in order to save those she cares about and the world.
All these so-called full members, they're all being so perfectly nice. So perfectly helpful. They're so perfectly normal it's abnormal. And all the time their eyes are following you, watching you. Watching you like... like a hungry dog watching a bone.
No. It’s wrong. I won't. I don't want to judge you guys, but you're talking about strategy and risk like this is some computer game. Like there aren't others involved. Have you forgotten that we're supposed to be in this to save lives?
I know. But I have to make sure no predators come around. I have to get them food. And I have to morph at least some of the time, so they can imprint on their mother here in the wild. Look... I know it seems stupid to you and Marco and probably everyone. But I have to do this.
Marco is a natural comedian with a great sense of humour, believing that you can either look at life as a comedy or a tragedy and after he lost his mother he had enough of tragedy, and he sometimes uses a joke to mask when he's feeling pain. At first he is the most reluctant to fight in the war until he discovers his mother is still alive and a slave to the Yeerks. He is the most cautious but also the most ruthless of the group - able to see the clearest path to victory and the most willing to make sacrifices to win.
We could get killed! Don't you get it? You saw what happened to the Andalite. I mean, this is radical stuff, Jake. This is for real. Real! We could all get killed.
Jake and Cassie were both invited. Rachel was invited, but she's going to that stupid gymnastics thing. Basically, everyone at school was invited. All I'm saying is, there must be a reason why I was not invited. And I think I know what that reason is: Darlene likes me. There's no other possible explanation.
You know what it says on the New Hampshire license plates? Access the memories. My mom knows. We talked about it. At the time we thought it was kind of corny. But then, the more we thought about it, it wasn’t corny at all. It was... inevitable. Live free or die.
Aximili, known as Ax for short, is the only free Andalite on Earth and like the other Animorphs he is little more than a kid. He is very honourable and duty-bound. He is also very serious, but slowly starts to develop a sense of humour. He is very curious about Earth culture and wishes to experience as much of it as possible, especially the sense of taste as Andalites do not have a mouth in their natural form (which often causes him to play with words when in human morph). As his species is much more technologically advanced than humans he can be somewhat prideful and arrogant at times, but this is tempered over time as he sometimes finds himself torn between helping his human friends and obeying the laws and orders of his people.
I have been here for these many weeks, hoping that my cousins would come for me. Hoping that some survived. Finally I risked sending out a mirrorwave call. It works by… I am not supposed to explain Andalite technology. My brother will… He would have been angry with me.
Yeerks do not invent. They steal. Everything they have, they have taken from other species. Most notably the Andalites. They do not have the intelligence - or the integrity - to invent a morphing technique of their own.
I have wanted to try other mouth uses. Drinking. Eating. Eeee-ting. Ting. Ahhh! Ohhh! Oh, oh, oh, what? What? What is that?! A new sense. It… I cannot explain it. It is… it comes from this mouth. It happened when I drank this liquid. It was pleasant. Very pleasant.
Visser Three is the only Yeerk to ever successfully infest the body of an Andalite, and he is a cold and utterly heartless individual, preferring to use fear to keep his subordinates in line and executing them instantly if they fail him. He is headstrong and power-hungry, preferring full-frontal action to stealth but sometimes making mistakes in his haste to achieve results. Nevertheless he is a cunning and terrifying opponent with a frightening array of alien morphs and the resources to put many grandiose schemes to speed up the conquest of Earth into action.
With this many hosts we can spread throughout the universe, unstoppable! Billions of us. We'll have to build a thousand new Yeerk pools just to raise Yeerks for half this number of bodies. Face it, Andalite, you have fought well and bravely. But you have lost.
Yes, yes. We lowly Yeerks know how superior you Andalites are. Holier-than-thou. The meddling moralists of the galaxy. The glorious, self-righteous Andalite princes, saving the galaxy from the despised Yeerks. Well. Here you are, Andalite child. And soon the rest of your group of bandits will be here as well.
Feed them to the Taxxons. Slowly. I don't have time for this. This Andalite is all yours, Sub-Visser. Make the Andalite demorph. Infest him. I leave the task to you. This is your specialty. Do not disappoint me.
