Project Overview
A Heart of Ice is a 113,000-word fantasy romance novel for adult readers. Set in a high-surveillance Fae society, the story follows Summer Chase, a 35-year-old fire wielder, navigating a political conspiracy, a slow-burn love triangle, and the weight of being chosen for something she never asked for. The audience is women in their 30s who want emotional depth, real stakes, and don't mind a slow burn.
This is a dual narration project with two open roles: one female narrator and one male narrator. Narrators record their respective POV chapters separately. Combined finished hours across both roles is approximately 12 hours.

A Heart of Ice is a 113,000 word fantasy romance novel for adult readers. It follows Summer Chase - a 35 year old human living in a high surveillance Fae society. She has the power to wield fire and works to keep herself and others like her safe from the Fae government. Humans are starting to disappear in another region just as a VP of technology she gets a new mysterious department at work focused on new surveillance technology. This is a journey of her coming to terms with the fact she may in fact be the chosen one and what she is willing to sacrifice as she walks into that role. Throw in a messy love triangle - the former college love who puts a surveillance bug on her the first time he sees her after ten years, and the best friend / friends with benefits who is ready to claim her right when their former college friend returns.
The story is told through multiple POVs:
- Summer: the female lead, guarded and a little lonely, her magic is driven by emotional energy so she can be seen as cold, deeply loyal to her small group of friends, more carefree and loose when she drinks (she uses the increase of emotional energy to burn off alcohol in her system)
- Jackie: Summer’s best friend who helped train her on how to use her powers, sassy, protective of her friends
- Kyria: Jackie’s wife, softer demeanor, cares deeply for her friends, where Jackie is more the logistics, Kyria is the empathetic one.
- Koda: The main love interest, golden retriever energy, extremely protective but also supportive of Summer, falls first and falls hard.
- Dune: Summer’s first love, full of regret, stern and cold at first but being around Summer causes him to soften some
- Rune / Aaron: Governor of a region, cocky, self confident, flirty, As Rune he is stalking Summer and Dune to find their secrets
Tone and Texture
Think quiet fire. The writing has emotional density without melodrama. Characters feel things deeply and say very little about it directly. The world feels like a normal urban city with some dark undertones about what is going on, but the emotional core is about connection, vulnerability, and what people protect themselves from.

- Aaron/ Rune [41] Voice direction: smooth, confident without being slick or slimy. He is the only character who is never rattled. His pace never changes because he already knows how the room will respond to him. there's real intelligence behind the charm, not just surface confidence.

Summer carries the majority of the book (approximately 8–9 finished hours). Additional female POVs include Jackie (4 chapters), plus brief chapters from Kyria, Emily, The Queen, and The Fates. Total project approximately 12 finished hours across both narrators.

Could we ever really make this dream come true though? With Dune back and bugging me, I have to tell him about my powers. Maybe he will be so freaked out, he will change his mind. He won’t want me as a partner anymore. That would be easiest. It would hurt, but I have survived it once. I could survive it again. Right? The coffee machine beeps at me, interrupting my internalized pep talk. The warmth in my mug does nothing to stop the downward spiral of thoughts. How do I tell Jackie? How do we deal with our jobs? What do Koda’s lips taste like? Will Dune actually care or will he just put up a fuss? Then my eyes find focus on the dress lying on the floor of the living room, halting my train of thought. Koda sleepily emerges from into the kitchen in a pair of grey sweats. Damn him. “I smelled coffee,” he mumbles as he comes in , crowding me against the counter. He reaches above and behind me to grab another mug. My face is right up on his shirtless chest. It takes all of me not to nuzzle up into it, so I sit my empty hand on his chest. He covers my hand with one of his as he places a mug under the coffee maker and flips it back on. “Mmmmmh, good morning,” he murmurs into my nape as he wraps his now free hand around my back. “Give a girl some warning next time. Save that magic bean juice.” I laugh setting my cup on the counter before looking back up at him. His face is wrought with confusion. He tugs at the hem of the black shirt I am wearing, brushing his knuckles along my thigh. “Is this my shirt?” Fuck.
Jackie is sitting up against the wall next to me. I sit up and look at her. We sit there across from each other in silence for a beat as Jackie chews her lip. “Why didn’t you tell me?” The question is asked softer than a whisper out of hurt, not fear. “To make sure I am on the same page… you are asking about Koda?” Jackie only responds with the cock of her head that says “Really?” “There…” I fumble on the right words… “There hasn’t been anything to tell you.” Jackie gives an indignant snort. “You are going to tell me that the sexual tension this morning was built overnight? Be fucking for real with me.” “No,” I moan. “We’ve had a… friends-with-benefits agreement for a while.” “Define ‘a while.’” “Eight years.” I grimace. “EIGHT YEARS?!” “I never said anything because early on, it really wasn’t something either of us talked about. Later, I couldn’t bring it up because he works for me. Then you started work for me. It has always been no strings attached, no drama.” “So what changed?” I lean my head in her direction. In return she gives me some great side eye. “Do not even pretend nothing has changed. Should I just ignore his ‘Let me choose you’ speech? Or the fact I would have walked in on you two sucking face had I walked in a minute later this morning? Something has changed. This is no longer just a casual arrangement.”
“Please don’t shut me out now. Let me choose, finally.” He whispers. A few more moments pass before Jackie fakes a cough, breaking the spell over the room. I turn to her. “I will also admit that I played both of you. Koda doesn’t know about the new job function under me. I needed you to be genuine in your anger of Dune and Koda for showing up last night. I knew he was coming the whole time.” Jackie sighs. “I thought we were done with secrets. But I get it. I’m making a full pot of coffee. Tell him about the new job function.” Jackie waves a hand at Koda. “Next time take it easy on her neck, for fucks sake. That’s going to take a pound of coverup tomorrow.” Koda brushes a thumb along my neck. “Sorry, love,” he whispers. “It was the closest I could get without …” “A dopamine confession?” I finish for him. Koda gives me a small smile. Our own little secret code. “Okay so tell me why work has anything to do with you tricking me into talking to Dune faster.”

Koda POV: A few steps away from the stall, I gather up the remnants of my common sense, trying to calm my heart. Summer pinches me in the side when she finds her way back to me. “Well, are you going to give me my flowers or not?” She has a smirk and cocked her hip out, just enough to show she is putting on a show of being petulant. I cup her cheek with my free hand before pulling her into a hug. “Hi.” I croak out. Summer chuckles a bit and just says, “Hi,” back into my neck. The brush of her lips is electrifying as she voices the simple word. My body shivers as it tries to release every desire I had just shoved into a box. Taking one step back I lift the flowers between us. “Wow, Koda. This is beautiful. You arranged this yourself?” Summer scans the flowers, smiling softly. “I did a good job?” “I would certainly say so!” “Perfect. Obviously these are for you, but we now need to take a selfie so I can send it to Gerba.” Summer rolls her eyes playfully and pulls us further out of the main walkway. “Made quite an impression, did she?” “Wanted to help me woo my woman. I fear she may actually just appear at my door one day if I don’t update her on my progress.” “Woo - what?” Summer’s face is clouded with confusion. Not letting her focus too much on that comment yet, I swing her around in front of me. I stand behind her, lifting my arms around her, phone at the ready. Summer turns her head to me right as I am about to rest it on her shoulder. Her breath mingles with mine, her lips mere centimeters from mine. “What… what is this, Koda?” It is the smallest of whispers. She’s so close. The compulsion surges through me to take her by the face and consume her. To let her overtake my soul. Tucking a windblown caramel lock of hair behind her ear, I try not to let my hand tremble too visibly. Then I pinch her chin, turning her back towards the phone. My voice refuses to release my confession while looking at her. Barely above a whisper, “Wooing. And hoping to the Fates that I didn’t wait too long to realize I wanted to.” From the phone screen I see Summer’s eyes widen slightly. “Smile, honey.” I whisper. Testing out the endearment brings us both back to reality. The word tastes funny, and Summer’s small scowl before smiling gives away her feelings on it also. That one is out.
Dune POV: Koda puts a hand to my chest before I can follow Summer into the house. “You need to wipe that look off your face. Now.” I physically take a step back at Koda’s bluntness. “What the hell are you talking about, Koda?” “You. Left. Her. Now take that look of longing and put it back in whatever box you need to.” “Koda, what is this about? So what if I realize how much I missed her? Am I not allowed to regret my choices?” Why am I fighting him? I need to use her for information. That does not require me to fight him on … whatever this is. “You broke her when you left. I had to pick up the pieces and glue her back together. If you think I am going to give you the chance to break her again… you are severely mistaken. I am glad you both are open to trying to be friends again. But lock that shit down because you are not hurting her again.” Koda punctuates the last six words to hammer in his point. I rub at my chest. The words clang around my soul. Not that I hurt her by leaving. Not that she missed me. That I broke her. I stare at my friend, wondering what he saw and how he stayed friends with me after. I push the boy that loved Summer back into the box I try to keep him in. Koda clocks the motion of my hand and I stop.
Aaron/ Rune POV: “Which device did they start at?” I attempt to keep the concern from my tone. Jeff must not buy it though.When the man doesn’t answer immediately I turn to look at him. The color drains from Jeff’s face. “Just spit it out already.” “It’s… they jumped on via your laptop’s IP address.” “Mine?” Jeff falters, “Yes, uh yes sir.” It’s as if a lightning bolt just hit the worry off my shoulders. The weight of it immediately shattered. A maniacal smile spreads across my face. Jeff takes a step back. I try and fail to reign it in. He is newer to this post, and after the last couple weeks, my behavior has been less than ideal. Ornery and short. But this… this news is the best I’ve received in weeks. Now I know exactly what she is distracted by. “Let me know once she gets close.” “She?” “Yes, she. It seems that Summer Chase has figured out that someone is using her classes and webinars for their own purposes. I imagine she will only let me continue to attend her classes until either she tracks me down, or until this class ends.” I go back to my office with just the slightest of skips in my step. Deep in my soul, there has always been a hunch that she would eventually find my registrations. Some might argue I wanted her to find them. If not, I would have taken more care in randomizing my actions. Then she may never have found me. She never could have shown her cards - she is looking for something. This is my favorite type of race. I only have two weeks left watching her with anonymity. Two weeks to figure out how to find a way to get in front of her. Such a limited time to find out why she would be looking into my registration? What would prompt her to research it? Does she know about the power wielding humans? What is making her tick? I start planning ways to get in front of her as she stares into her camera and into my soul. “I can’t wait to finally meet you, Summer Chase.”
