2051: Indie Game Built on Source Engine

Project Overview

Hello everyone!

My name is MaddaCheeb, or shortened, Maddi. I've done a lot of work with Valve's Source Engine format over the last six years, from Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns to Half-Life 2 mods. I'm ready to tackle my biggest project yet: "2051." I'm hoping to get it on Steam Greenlight by the end of the year.

It's a standalone Portal 2 Mod that only requires the game to launch. Everything else is 100% original content/re-used Valve assets used in the game. The game will be split across five chapters, each about forty minutes long. Length is not my goal with 2051. Due to me being the only developer on the project, I'm striving for quality over quantity with the narrative.

2051 takes place some time after an apocalyptic event nicknamed "the Fall" wipes out nearly all of the world's population and collapses the environment. Cassidy Burton, a high-ranking official for a very powerful corporation, wakes up in an abandoned vessel with no memory of how she got there. Finding a lifeline through a radio to a man named Samuel Ross, Cassidy must fight her way out of the vessel and across Alaska to hunt the truth of how the world fell and her existence.

The game is being designed as a "quiet apocalypse." The environments that the player and Cassidy traverses are long-abandoned. Puzzle elements will be included, but the core of the game is an exploratory and introspective narrative, incorporating many transhumanism elements.

The writing of the game is complete up to chapter 2, while the overall plot is finished.

I've attached a video showing pre-Alpha gameplay to show I'm serious about the project. Development will take a while, but I'll be releasing videos showing the voiceovers in-game for use in a reel or portfolio as development comes along.

Latest Updates

  • Expanded Role

    Hey all,

Quick update. I've expanded the role of the PA Announcer to have a few more lines to take the place as a "digital assistant" in Cassidy's apartment, greeting her with the time and opening the shutters. However, in doing so, I've decided to make the role female-only now. Apologies for any inconvienience!

  • Samuel and Mark have been cast + New Roles

    Hey all,

Thank you again for auditioning. I have casted the role of Samuel and Mark. However, I have also begun the process of opening up new roles. I have added a new one for a PA Announcer during the prologue sequence when the character enters the Xen Corporation building. It's a small role but I will be adding more soon. Thanks!

  • I'm back

    Hey all,

Thank you once again for auditioning. Sometime today/tomorrow I will pick the roles. I very much appreicate the effort that all of you have put in, even for my small little game. It's very appreciated!

I'll be adding new roles to this project over the next several months so even if you don't bag the audition for Mark or Samuel, keep checking back! More roles will open up.

    Thanks again,

    Maddi

  • Thank You

Thank you to everyone that has submitted an audition so far!

I'm continuting to develop the plot and currently have 3 out of 5 episodes written. I'll be on vacation for a little bit until roughly mid-June. As such I'm extending the due date a few more days. I haven't forgotten about the submissions!

When I get back, I will have both roles picked by June 20th. Thanks again everyone!

  • Auditions and further roles

Just to give everyone a fair shot, I won't pick who the role goes to until the submission date closes, little less than a month from now. This will also give me more time to finalize dialogue and get even more of the game plot written.

There are more roles that will be added in the future as development comes along.

Role assigned to: caitlinva

This voice will be used as a building-wide PA address for when Cassidy enters Xen Corporation HQ and for her apartment's digital assistant. The corporation announcer should sound very "authorative" and assuring, while the apartment assistant should sound soothing. The word "Xen" should be pronounced like "zen".

  • ID confirmed. Welcome, Cassidy Burton.

  • Welcome to Xen Corporation. Leading the world to a higher place.

  • Good morning, Cassidy Burton. The time is now 11:13 AM on June 17th, 2018. The latest daily news is available on your desktop.

Mark Golaski is a neuroscientist working with Xen Corporation, the world's largest corporation. He's middle aged, in his late 30s, and has a very "re-assuring" voice.

  • (phone-call conversation) "Cassidy Burton? It's Mark Golaski from the neuroscience lab. How are you doing?"

  • "There's some last-minute paperwork we need you to fill out before Monday. Can you swing by the office today?"

Samuel Ross is 31 years old. The character was written with a british/australian accent in mind, but I am open to interpretation. He is the radio lifeline and secondary protagonist to Cassidy Burton and has a large role in the game. He can be emotionally detached at times, leading him to be calm and collective in the majority of the situations he is faced with, while still remaining empathetic.

  • "I think you're suffering from some form of amnesia. It's not uncommon, it happened to a lot of people I knew after the Fall. Radiation sickness. Spread like wildfire."

  • "Look, I know it's a lot to process. But please, try to calm down. You're going only going to make things worse by panicking."
