Smith was one of the original characters of the 1st anime, GNG. He was Gin's friend, and he was mostly for comic relief back then, but since has changed into one of those very cool old soldier characters who everybody is scared crapless of in this anime. He was tasked with keeping soccer a safe and escorting are out of the territory after the monster attacked it, but he got distracted when he saw GB almost get hit by a car and then lost his leg saving him, Also losing sight of Sakura in the process. After they got separated, Sakura gave birth to Weed alone and developed a disease soon after. Upon finally seeing her in this condition Smith cried bitter tears. And promised that he would take weed to his father, the leader of Ohu. After her death, Smith was going to keep to his promise to protect Weed and bring him there, and he set out on the journey with him. He is greatly respected by everybody and especially GB, whose life he saved.
As far is the Type of voice that is needed for this character, the closest English voice that I have seen as the English voice for That's 3rd Hokage in Naruto. He sounds similar to what I imagine an English sounding Smith could sound like, but tweaked a little bit. VA needs to sound old, battle worn, and cool! The character dies in episode 5 or 6 but dies return in the last episode as a spirit helping the main character to defeat the bad guy. Anyone voicing this character must be dedicated to voice in the character and every episode that he is in.

Line1: [1:46] (Smith sees the pups failing at fishing and he is laughing. (make the laughing noise) It is a light hearted laugh and not teasing them. Then he says while still in good humor and grinning through it )
"It's useless! If you do it that way the fish will escape easily!"
Line 2 [2:05]( The soldier is telling the kids that they could not live in the area if Smith did not defend it long ago. Smith responds at 1st sounding a bit annoyed while still trailing off in his mind remember in hard times, saying,)
" Why do you speak of the old times?"
( He then turns to the pups and more cheerfully says)
" Well, Watch how I do it."
Line 3 [16:19]( Smith sees Weed use the sword fang(battouga in english) And he is astonished and curious. The whole line is quite dramatic but in a quiet, yet bold tone, not with a raised voice.)
" That attack… the sword fang! Why did that kid use the leader's attack?"
Line 4 [17:13] ( He approaches Weed, as he has fallen unconscious after the battle and wakes him up. Eager to get answers)
" Pull yourself together kid. Where did you learn that attack?"
( A realization that he could be the leaders kid struck him and he is more energetic with this question, yet still trying to stay calm)
" Boy, could it be that your mother's name is Sakura?" (Weed nods and Smith is shocked and thinks,)
"I knew it! This is the leader's kid!"
(Then urgently says)
"Sakura! Where is she!"
Line 5 [18:55]( The hardest line! So emotional! ( Smith sees Sakura close to death and he is filled with grief. He cries out in agony and regret (and his voice cracks, strains and hisses as if a smoker's voice)
"SORRY!!! Sakura, I'm so sory!"
( After the line he cries a bit and chokes a bit, gritting his teeth trying to hold the tears back. There is a little voice in the beginning but fades out to sniffles, then silence within the limit of 2 1/2 seconds.)
Congratulations! Your voice fits Smith really well! I would ask only that you say some lines a bit slower and try to match the timing of his mouth on some lines that show him speaking, but you did great nonetheless! I would like for all of these lines to be re-done that way as well when I give you your lines for episode 1 tomorrow. Say each line that you are given three different ways, but no more than that, while still keeping in time with the original dub, and with the same tone and emotion.
