Sadie is the main love interest. She was born a poor British girl and eventually moved to France by hitching a ride in a wagon shipping goods and food to the country. When she exited she, she landed in Versailles. She had learned the place up and down by mindlessly wandering the streets, but she had made a friend with a French commonfolk named Marie. Sadie then meets Arthur. Ruscus fell madly in love with her and would do anything to gain it back from her but she does not feel the same way about him. But Arthur also loves Sadie and Sadie does feel the same way about him. Giving Ruscus a reason to hate Arthur.
