ROYA, (3 seasons, beginning episode 3) - Hacker & Strega Crew Member

Early/mid twenties, Ebullient, vivacious, curious, long winded & pushy/cocky when nervous, terrified half the time and trying not to show it.

Any (if American, not a Southern accent).

Main character

Roya moved to New New York for university but instead spent her time becoming a one-zero (A hacker). She was arrested when a job went wrong and ended up spending six months in the Penitentiary in Louisiana, escaping in time to cross paths with the Strega. She is actually very good at her job, but right now is on the run with no-one to turn to, and the Strega looks like a possible way out.

Youthful and curious, but with enough past history not to be naive or even particularly impressionable. Her energy brings a new dynamic into the world weary crew. Franklin and Alice for slightly different reasons struggle to accept her, and she does herself no favours with a dismissive approach to Franklin and a competitive one to Alice. She is however clearly competent and vivacious and in time the team all grind along together. She is not used to violence so the crew’s propensity for it disturbs her but she also is unwilling to walk away - her enthusiasm for the mystery of the thing in the cargo hold is genuine.

Roya gets longwinded and over-explains when she is nervous. She puts on a cocky front, giving the impression she is not fazed by any of it, to hide the fact that she is terrified. This should be played as ‘too cool for school’ rather than being in your face. Remember that we want grounded, not quirky or manic pixie performances.

Line 1 Setting: You've been picked up by the crew of the Strega and don't know if this is a good thing yet. Scene is Strega interior, think cramped, noisy, moving armoured car. Everyone is on top of each other. Alice and Franklin have just removed some Penitentiary tracking devices from your head implants, one of which was a driving you mad with its constant talking at the back of your mind. You've been putting on a cocky front but the relief is too much and you start gently crying. Alice asks what's wrong.

Line 2 setting: Strega interior - engines off but it's still cramped with everyone trying to crowd round the strange box from the hold. This is your chance to show the crew what you can do - you're gonna open the weird box they can't. You're nervous though, rambling a bit, but trying to seem in control - both because you want to get this right and because you're not working with the best of kit right now.

Line 3 Setting: Scene is an exterior canal side bar in old New York, the calm before the storm. You and Henry are having a drink before meeting the others. You've been winding Henry up a little, while also trying to get him to open up,  and he thinks he's offended you. You're relaxed, cheerful.

  • 1.(SNIFFING) It’s the silence! That thing has been insinuating prayers and exhortations to work since they put it into me. God, but it is good to be rid of his voice.

  • 2.Okay to be clear before we start. I’ve downloaded softs from an old cache of mine onto new data spikes I bought from the vending machine at reception. What I’m saying is that I’m operating with out-of-date softs and cheap hardware so you know, you’re not seeing my work at its best.

  • 3. Chill, I’m just yanking your chain. However, now you do owe me the story of Devereaux.
