Doctor Eggman is a scientist with a dream, conquering the world so everyone bows before his genius. His ego is huge, Sonic and the others are always screwing up his plans, but he enjoys the challenge and would actively reject reaching his objective in a way he doesn't find satisfactory. In this story, Eggman finds a mysterious stone, that (due to time travel shenanigans) ended up on his base, capable of creating illusions that become real to the people he chooses to affect. With it, Eggman begins his ultimate plan for world domination, in which he defeats Sonic, the Resistance being the only thing that can stand on his way.
