As a young boy Charlie, then known as Chester Middleton, was read The Hobbit by his mother Gertrude Middleton and got interested in fantasy realms as a result. When he was twelve, Charlie got scared at a birthday party and called his parents to come pick him up. On the way, they were hit by a drunk driver and his father was killed while his mother was left brain-dead and only kept alive by life-support.

Soon after the accident, Charlie hacked into a game company's server and stole a first-person shooter game called The Red Scare before it was finished that has the player battling against super-soldier vampires to save some hospital patients. He reprogrammed it to reflect her "flamingly liberal politics" and released it for free. He was eventually tracked down and arrested, forcing him to go on the run for 16 years. During that time, Charlie secretly visited his mother and read to her while using his aliases to fund his mother's hospital bills.

Charlie became an IT expert who formerly worked at Richard Roman Enterprises. He's a gay nerd with a taste in electro pop, left politics and is a keen gamer and fangirl, with his favorite series including Harry Potter and Star Wars. He has a tattoo, which he got at Comic-Con while drunk, of Princess Leia in a slave girl bikini astride a 20-sided dice.

  • This is a conversation between the Winchesters and Charlie after he helps them.

    CHARLIE
    Thank you.

    DEANNA
    Thanks.

    CHARLIE
I left your dumb flask on the back seat, by the way. Worst good-luck charm ever.

    SAMANTHA
So listen, um, we can't thank you enough.

    CHARLIE
Actually, you can. Never contact me again, like, ever. Deal?

    SAMANTHA
    Deal.

    DEANNA
Keep your head down out there, okay?

    CHARLIE
This ain't the first time I've disappeared. You think my name is really Charlie Bradbury? Please. So, good luck saving the world. Peace out, bitches. [Pause] Thanks a lot.

  • This line is full of Charlie thinking about how his mother was put into a coma. It really gets him emotional by the end.

    DEANNA

Listen to me. This poison, it's designed to put your mind into an endless cycle while your insides turn to mush, okay? And its fuel is fear. Now, call me crazy, but I think the only way to break the cycle is to let go of the fear and stop playing the game.

    CHARLIE

    You don't know that.

    DEANNA

I know that your fear is creating all this. But, you're not afraid of those super soldier vamps out there. And you're not afraid of this game. And you're not afraid of what it did to you. Hey. Look at me.

[Referring to Charlie's mother] You're afraid of losing her. Charlie, she's already gone.

    CHARLIE

You don't understand. You don't understand. I was at some sleepover thing, and I got scared.

[Fighting tears] So, I called my parents to come and get me. They should never have been driving that night.

    DEANNA

    It wasn't your fault.

    CHARLIE

I just want to tell her that I'm sorry... and that I love her. And just have her hear it again. I just need her to hear that one more time, but she can't. She, she can't.

    DEANNA

I know. Believe me, I know. But, you gotta let it go.

  • This final line is Charlie emotionally reading the Hobbit one last time to his mother before he lets her go. Remember- like the last line, it's emotional. He has to let his mother go, it's very hard for him.

    CHARLIE
One last time, okay? "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on, or to eat. It was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
