Maki Sonomura is the most important character in Persona 1. At the beginning of the story, she comes off as a shy, reserved and pleasant girl, with an interest in painting. She wants nothing more than the good company of her friends and to live a peaceful, normal life. Unfortunately, that reality is robbed of her when she's hospitalized, making her more depressed and kicking off the events of the story.

When she returns later on, Maki is suddenly a much more outgoing, happy, peppy high school girl, much to the confusion of her friends. She's very emotional, not really keeping any of her thoughts inside and acting incredibly friendly to others.

Auditioning for Maki also requires auditioning for two other characters, Aki and Mai. These two are representations of Maki's id and super-ego, manifested in child forms. Aki is a mischievous, evil girl who only thinks about playing tricks on those around her, and making fun of her enemies. Mai, on the other hand, is an even quieter, shier scared girl, who tends to be very prone to crying, and believes it'd be best for her to lock herself off from the world.

In the game, she's voiced by Melissa Fahn. Auditioning for Maki requires high acting range, as Maki's character fluctuates throughout the story as it explores many different sides of her. Her voice is in the mid-to-high feminine range, and her child selves will require performances from both sides of the coin (Bratty and innocent).

  • I've been feeling better lately... Maybe due to the nice dreams I see. I can't remember them well, but... Either way, they put me at ease. The people are all so nice... It's never unpleasant...  And the town has all these pretty flowerbeds. It's like... I went through a gate to paradise. Meanwhile, of course, in here, I'm... I'm... heavy breathing Why... WHYYY!

Maki reflects on her situation, confined all alone in the hospital. She focuses on the nice, pleasant dreams she's had lately, which makes her feel more peaceful. Her voice becomes softer and happier as she goes on about her personal paradise. That is, until she snaps back to reality, and is overcome by an anxiety attack, which leads her to cry out "Why?".

  • Heyo! What's up, Naoya? ...Oh, did I knock you down? Oops. Sorryyy, my bad.
Maki comes in bursting through a broken wall and knocks down Naoya by accident. Excited to come back to school and see her friends, she greets them happily and casually, before realizing their weird looks on her and Naoya on the floor. She tries to brush it aside, apologizing while still in a high mood and chuckling it off.

...Fine! I'll just go by myself then! I can't just stay quiet and do nothing while my friends are in trouble! If I did, and end up regretting it... Even if others will forgive me, I know I just won't be able to forgive myself!
After her friends try to discourage her from setting out, Maki bursts out in anger and declares that she's going anyway. She understands the danger of what she's doing, but decides to go anyway because she knows she'd be suffering for a lot longer if she doesn't, getting a lot more emotional as she explains her reasoning.

  • (As Aki) I'm gonna tell my Daddy on you! Daddy's REAL strong! You guys won't stand a chance!
After being defeated by the group, Aki starts boasting about how strong and powerful her dad is, like most kids after being beaten at the playground. She's clearly very upset over being defeated, although starts getting more seriously confidant by the end since she knows how powerful her dad is.

(As Mai)  Waaah... *sniffle* Why can't I just hide...? Won't I be safe if I just stay here? Forever and ever?
Mai is hopelessly crying out of fear, scared out the outside world and the enemies that hate her within it. She doesn't understand why she can't just stay hiding forever, since as sad as it is, it's the only way she really knows.
