Legend says that the enigmatic Millennium Puzzle will grant one wish to whoever deciphers its ancient secrets. Upon solving it, high school student Yuugi Mutou unleashes "another Yuugi," a peculiar presence contained inside. Now, whenever he is faced with a dilemma, this mysterious alter ego makes an appearance and aids him in his troubles. Wishing to unravel the mystery behind this strange spirit, Yuugi and his companions find themselves competing with several opponents in "Duel Monsters," a challenging card game used by people seeking to steal the Millennium Puzzle in a desperate attempt to harness the great power within. If there was ever a kid born to play Duel Monsters, Yugi is that kid. While his fellow freshmen at Domino High School may only see him as the shy type, Yugi's best friends Joey, Tristan, and Téa know about his secret talent. When Yugi was growing up, his grandfather gave him an ancient Egyptian artifact called the “Millennium Puzzle” to solve. It is said that whosoever manages to solve this puzzle will be granted dark and mysterious powers. Yugi eventually solved the Millennium Puzzle, and when he did, something amazing happened! The age-old powers of the puzzle flooded out and Yugi became Yami Yugi. While Yugi may not know the full extent of the Millennium Puzzle's power, he's slowly discovering its mysterious links to ancient Egypt.

Once a wild and tough street kid, Jonouchi has learned the value of friendship and has become a loyal buddy to Yugi. Although Joey's harsh street background occasionally makes him hot-headed and too quick to act, he has a heart of gold and would do anything for his friends, especially his younger sister who lives apart from him.

Among all of Yugi's friends, Téa is the voice of reason. A childhood friend of Yugi's, Téa is also the biggest cheerleader in the group, always encouraging everyone to believe in themselves and never give up. Téa loves her friends so very much and is willing to help them any way she can.

Honda met Yugi at the same time as his long time pal, Jonouchi. Even though these two friends bicker every once in awhile, they always cover each other's backs. Sometimes he's quick to panic, but when it comes down to it, Tristan is willing to do whatever it takes to support and cheer on his friends.

Mokuba Kaiba was Seto Kaiba's faithful younger brother. Mokuba loved Seto and supported him no matter what. Mokuba challenged anyone who spoke ill of his big brother. However, Mokuba wasn't afraid to question Seto when he felt that Seto was doing something wrong. When Seto was young and living at the orphanage, he learned that life was tough. Despite their hardships, Mokuba and Seto were able to cheer each other up. However, after taking over Kaiba Corp, Seto's smile faded because he had to be serious and ruthless to stay on top. Mokuba wanted to see his brother smile again.
