Kinkajou is an excitable and bubbly dragon, who usually speaks in a slightly higher register. She's normally very charismatic, with a side of being stubborn and slightly childlike at times.
(Excited/Talkative) "Isn't this exciting? I'm so excited I can hardly STAND IT. That's why I'm this color, by the way. I have been trying all morning to turn myself something more dignified and I can't do it; my scales are all like, YAY WE'RE REALLY HERE! and will not listen to me."
(Excited/Inquiring) "Ooooo. How does it feel to be related to someone famous? Probably a bit like being best friends with a queen. Which I am, just incidentally, so, I mean, I totally get it!"
(Exclaiming) "Look at her! I'm sure she'd love to be called Friendly."
Snowfall is a gruff IceWing, who tends to be very outspoken. She's often seen to be paranoid and slightly dramatic, but very thoughtful and intense.
[Panicked/Hysterical) "And guess what one of them saw? […] DRAGONS! Hundreds of dragons! Coming this way! Across the ocean! I don't know from where! But they're coming for my kingdom and I won't let them! Build me more Ice Cliff RIGHT NOW!"
(Anxious) "Me. She chose me. I'm the next queen of the IceWings. Not Crystal. She thinks I'd be the best queen. Is she right? What if she's wrong? Now I'm the one who has to protect us from the NightWings. And I'm the one who has to find a cure for this plague before any more dragons die. Queen Snowfall."
(Angry/Upset) "How is that possible? […] Why is this happening NOW, just when I found you?! I NEED THAT MAGIC!"
The narrator of the books. Read out a page or two of the book, leaving a short pause (about one second) where dialogue occurs. Thoughts should be left out when they are in italics, as those are considered inner dialogue.
No.
Thunder rumbled through the dark clouds like boulders sliding down a mountain.
What had Moon seen in his mind? What did she know?
Did she know that he felt — that he’d been thinking about her — her eyes and the way she tilted her head — her claws that could gently shield his scavenger one moment and rip apart a goat the next — the way she stood up to him the first time they met … but looked at him as though he was worth listening to …
She must know that he thought about her all the time.
Stop thinking about it. Don’t think it — don’t let her see any more —
“But you’re safe now, I promise!” she said quickly, reaching toward him as he leaped back. “The rock you’re holding — it’s skyfire. It can shield your thoughts from me. As long as you’re holding it or wearing it close to your scales, I can’t hear anything you’re thinking.”
“Sounds like another NightWing lie,” Winter snarled. What have you seen in my head? he thought fiercely.
Moon wiped raindrops from her eyes and took a deep breath. “I promise you, Winter. I can’t hear anything in your mind right now. And even before, it was very … confusing.”
Behind her, Qibli let out a snort that sounded a bit too amused.
“That’s how I knew about Icicle and Scarlet,” Moon said. “I heard them talking in Icicle’s dream. And I heard Icicle planning to kill Starflight on her way to the library. But I can only hear what dragons are thinking right at that moment — I can’t reach in and rummage around in anyone’s brain or anything like that.”
Winter found this image not very reassuring at all.
“You’ve been listening to us from the moment you met us,” he said. “Deceiving us. Spying on us.” He hissed out a wisp of frostbreath, turning the raindrops around him into tiny chunks of ice that clattered to the ground. “I should have expected as much from a NightWing.”
But not from this NightWing. He’d thought Moon was different. He’d begun to think she might be the only NightWing in the world he could trust.
And the whole time she’d been lying and snooping around in his thoughts.
He must be the most dim-witted dragon who’d ever lived.
Lynx is rather snarky, but also supportive and kind. She tends to be sarcastic, clever, and sympathetic.
Congratulations. [...] You must have had such an adventure.
Sounds like maybe you were being extremely paranoid and anxious about nothing, then? And possibly that might apply to other things you are extremely paranoid about?
Queen Glacier is very calm and collected, and she is typically thoughtful and well-spoken.
(cool and thoughtful) “It might,” ... “The tree is enchanted to behave like a real tree. And I can see how such a thing would benefit her tribes greatly, although, as I said, it’s an unusual queen who would choose a path toward peace and cooperation over clear and simple vengeance.”
(calm, cool, and curious) “We haven’t had a Cirrus in many years,” ... “And I don’t recall any IceWings leaving us for the Talons of Peace — unless they were from the lower classes, outside the rankings. Perhaps that’s why I don’t know him. Or perhaps he changed his name.”
(briskly) “Princes Winter and Hailstorm,” ... “Your task is simple. Enter the Diamond Caves and search until you find the frozen dragon by the river chasm. Touch one of these spears to her.” ... “Whoever returns shall take first place in the rankings. The other … we bid farewell.”
Snail is whiny and self-centered, his father used to be the leader of the Talons of Peace.
(whining, bothered) “Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat,”
(whining and grumpy) “I was being STEALTHY,” ... “Dad said I should practice. He thinks I’m really good at it. He said maybe I’ll be an amazing spy one day.”
(grumbling) “Fine fine FINE.” ... “You know, my dad used to be the leader of the Talons of Peace. I don’t know why he lets you boss him around. When he wanted to step aside, he could have let me take over, I mean, what was wrong with that plan …”
Barracuda is a Seawing student at Jade Mountain Academy. Very little is known about them.
“Tag! You’re it!”
Bromeliad is a rather grumpy and irritable Rainwing with a tendency to shout at dragonets.
(demanding) “What are you doing back here?” ... “You were supposed to stay at that school the queen sent you to! I told her you were a terrible student and would definitely fail or run off, but would she listen? Mysteriously not! And now here you are, so I suppose I was right!”
“I’ll go tell Queen Glory you’re here.”
(somewhat annoyed) "My student Kinkajou ran off during a venom training session and hasn't come back. I want the blame lifted from me so I can go back to my regular life."
(concerned) “Why would any dragon do that to herself?” ... “It’s worse than refusing to eat. Another day of it and she’d probably be dead. At least she’ll be able to heal now that she has to sleep.”
“Remember that RainWing a few years ago who couldn’t sleep? That was the saddest case I ever saw.”
“It’s like he wasn’t even a RainWing at all,” ... “He was a lot grumpier than a real RainWing, too.”
Eagle was formerly a Skywing soldier, and fought alongside Pyrite in the war.
(cold and aggressive) “She’s Queen Ruby now,” ... “And I don’t remember fighting any IceWings and leaving them alive.” ... “I suppose if I did, that’s a mistake that could be corrected.”
(roaring, angry) “What?” ... “How dare you? I would never be friends with an IceWing! Is this a joke? Did someone pay you to make a fool out of me?”
(relaxed) “Oh. Another wounded veteran,” ... “I’ve seen plenty of those. Hope he recovers.”
Exquisite was formerly a Rainwing queen and is obsessed with sloths.
(upset, shouting) “Toe-Fur is nobody’s lunch!” ... “Those nasty black dragons have already eaten one of my sloths! I’m not letting it happen again!
Heliconia is a female rainwing who was assigned to be one of Queen Glory's guards.
“Actually, it’s Heliconia, Your Majesty,” ... “But good guess.”
“But I shouldn’t leave you unguarded, Majesty.”
A female Nightwing who was guarding the wingery.
“I don’t like it,” ... “We’re supposed to keep complete strangers away from the dragonets. And this one looks … the mildest word I can think of is hostile.”
A very young dragonet, but old enough to talk.
(excited) “Pretty new dragons!”
A very young dragonet, but old enough to talk.
“Glittery!”
A very young dragonet, but old enough to speak. He made himself look like Winter.
“I can do that!” ... “Look look look.”
“Sure!”
“Don’t mind him,”
A very young dragonet, but old enough to speak. She turned herself the color of Qibli.
“Try this one,”
“Hrm,”
“Woo!” ... “Let’s see if I can do his snout!”
A very young dragonet, but old enough to speak. She is bossy and more reserved than her Rainwing peers.
“He’s so useless,” ... “He’s still having nightmares about the volcano every night, even though that was months ago. Toughen up, lizard!”
“Some NightWing he is,” ... “We keep telling him what an important, dangerous tribe we are, but frankly, I’m not sure he’ll ever measure up. I guess some dragons are just —”
Mayfly is a Mudwing doctor in Possibility.
“I need your authorization on this,” ... “To have her transferred to the clinic. They’ll take care of her. Although they’ll want to know what really happened to her.”
“Are you sure?” ... “She wasn’t hit by an avalanche? Or thrown off a cliff? Or trampled by a herd of hippos? That really happened to a patient of mine once. There’s no shame in admitting it. Hippos can happen to anybody.”
(skeptically) “With superdragon strength?”
“Hello, I’m Meerkat,” ... “Wait out here.”
“Sorry, there’s not enough room in there for seven dragons. Mayfly is very strict about her space. Extra visitors can wait in the garden.”
“Drop that IceWing right now,”... “I order you by the authority of the Enclave.”
Obsidian is a judgemental Nightwing with a dislike for strangers.
“You’re the peculiar dragonet,”... “Failed school already? Did they realize you can’t talk and send you back? What’s with the multicolored escort?”... “Exactly who are you?”
“I have to take you to the Night Village,” ... “That’s the protocol for new dragons in the rainforest. We’ll send her a message, and if she wants to see you, she’ll come find you there.”
“Well, come along, then.”
Riptide is a responsible yet playful Seawing who is the current leader of the Talons of Peace.
“I apologize,” ... “Let’s pretend that never happened. My name is Riptide. I saw your signal … Are you looking for the Talons of Peace?”
“We don’t have a lot of SkyWings,” ... “Ruby pardoned almost everyone who’d had a disagreement with her mother, so all the fugitives who’d been hiding from Scarlet went home. But we still have a couple who don’t feel safe going back — I can ask one of them.”
(hesitantly excited) “Jade Mountain?” ... “You must know Tsunami. How is she? Did she send you? Was there a message for me?”
Tundra is the strict mother of Winter. She always hides her feelings in favor of acting calm and composed.
“This hunt is for the table of the queen herself,” ... “Whoever brings down the first polar bear will be invited to sit at her side this evening.”
“Good,” ... “No apologies. But now it is time to rise. There will be a ceremony in the courtyard in seven minutes that you must attend.”
“Thank you for bringing Hailstorm home.” ... “It was the least you could do,”
Pyrite is a young, anxious SkyWing. They're clumsy and tend to be incredibly doubtful of their own ability. Their voice is soft and tired.
"I can try. I mean... I might get us lost, but... I'll do my best, for Queen Scarlet. I always do my best for her."
"I'm completely loyal. I would have kept fighting for Queen Scarlet as long as she needed me. But when Ruby took the throne, she made everyone swear an oath to her, and I couldn't do that, you know? I'm completely loyal to Queen Scarlet. Always and always and always."
"There go my stupid talons, getting in my way as usual. I wish I weren't so clumsy and useless."
Avalanche is a rough, slightly mean SkyWing, with a harsh voice.
"Looks like flame, [...] But it can't be. What's wrong with his face?"
"My biggest regret, [...] is that we didn't kill you then. I don't care that Kestrel got away. But If I'd known Scarlet would keep you alive--"
