Wings of Fire: The Audio Drama (Casting Season 1; Part 1)

Wings of Fire: The Audio Drama (Casting Season 1; Part 1)

Project Overview

When the war has lasted twenty years, the dragonets will come...

-

Wings of Fire: The Audio Drama is a project seeking to adapt the story of the series of fantasy novels Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland into a podcast/audio drama format. This casting call is for voice actors needed for the first three episodes of Season 1, which will be adapting the first book in the series, The Dragonet Prophecy. The series centers around seven tribes of dragons that live a continent called Pyrrhia that are currently engaged in a terrible war that is prophesized to end shortly after the births of five young dragons. Season 1 follows the perspective of these five dragons as they escape from their underground home in an attempt to save the world on their own terms.

This casting call is meant to be accessible to those who are unfamiliar with the series, and as such has changed some of the terms present in the books and removed some major spoilers.

-

What I'm Looking For:

  • You must be 16+ to apply!

  • Each line in your audition must be said at least twice. The format is up to you!

  • This is a freelance project made to entertain, and as such is unpaid.

  • While I do not expect professional-quality recordings from every auditionee, I do expect clear mic quality and no background noise.

  • This casting call will end tentatively on July 7, with a chance to be extended past that date depending on how many auditions I receive. This project will not cast early.

  • I have a zero AI policy in any way, shape, or form.

Clay

Character Overview: Clay is one of the five protagonists of Season 1, and one of the prophesized "dragonets of destiny". He a six year old swamp dragon (around sixteen in human years), and is the warm, good-natured, a bit absent-minded, sometimes goofy, and lovable older brother figure of the main quintet. His character arc revolves around the way his caretakers throughout his youth seemed determined to convince him that he was a monster, full of ferocious rage and with the strength to kill anyone. However, Clay has no desire to be a killing machine, or even be a hero (although his kind nature often lends to him doing some pretty heroic deeds anyways) - he just wants to protect his friends from harm, and maybe eat lots of tasty food along the way. Clay wants to prove that he gets to choose the kind of dragon he wants to be - and no prophecy or natural dragon instincts are allowed to get in the way.

Voice: Clay's voice is warm, deep, and a bit slow. Just by the way he talks it should be evident that he's a friendly guy who just wants to get through life with the least amount of conflict. He's imagined to sound a bit like a stereotypical fantasy kids show protagonist, (ex: Finn from Adventure Time or Steven from Steven Universe), but with a lower pitch. Carries the energy of a proud older brother, and is filled with wistful longing anytime he talks about food.

  • (comforting) "Hey, stop. Quit snarling at each other like mini Kestrels. Nobody's happy here. Sunny deals with it differently, that's all. But remember what we decided — we five stick together or else everything gets worse, right?"

  • (excited) "With a feast! There was a feast at the end of the story! When the missing SeaWing princess got home, her parents were so happy they made a feast! I remember the feast. They ate a whole whale. I bet I could eat a whole whale. Do you think we'll get a feast?"

  • (determined) "I'd like to be something more than alive. I'd like to be the kind of dragon she doesn't think I am — the kind they write prophecies about. That dragon who would save her no matter how awful she is."

Character Overview: Tsunami is one of the five protagonists of Season 1, and one of the prophesized "dragonets of destiny". She is a six year old ocean dragon (around sixteen in human years), and is the ferocious, slightly bossy, fiercely determined, self-appointed leader of the main quintet. Her character arc revolves around how she always believed herself to be lost royalty, and that she was destined to one day become queen of the sea. However, when Tsunami learns that her gut feeling was correct, and she is the heir to a throne, she quickly realizes how difficult it is for her, a dragon raised far away from her kingdom in a cave underground, to feel like a connected and dignified member of her tribe...let alone someone who can become queen one day. Tsunami is forced to do a lot of growing up, and realize what it truly means to be someone who can lead and take initiative - and that violence isn't always the answer.

Voice: Tsunami's voice is loud and sharp - think "angry, easily annoyed older sister in a sitcom" vibes. She's always yelling and making a scene, and always has a retort or an insult to throw at someone. Her voice has a medium-high pitch, and sounds a little gruff and rough around the edges - but without the maturity of an adult. She very much sounds like she's trying to mimic an idea in her head of what a dignified queen or a strong general would say.

  • (bold) "I've won. You can all see that. We can end this now, without killing anyone. I ask you all to let him live!"

  • (furious) "Where have you BEEN? Do you know how WORRIED we've been? How could you DO that to us? I was so sure that the NightWings did something to you that I nearly threw them all back to the volcano! We've had search parties out every day, but not ONE SIGN of you ANYWHERE! Not even Deathbringer, well, he said he smelled you over to the west, but who trusts him, NOT ME IS WHO. I haven't slept in days, Sunny! DAYS!"

  • (apologetic) "I think we should. I don't belong here, Mother. I wanted to, but — I'm only causing trouble, and I'm not doing what I was hatched to do. I don't speak the underwater language. I don't understand the Council. You have two daughters now who could be great queens one day. But my destiny is somewhere else. I have to go stop the war. With my friends."

Glory

Character Overview: Glory is one of the five protagonists of Season 1, and the replacement for one of the prophesized "dragonets of destiny". She is a six year old rainforest dragon (around sixteen in human years), and is the sarcastic, blunt, prickly, but clever and strong-willed member of the main quintet. Her character arc revolves around how she was never intended to be a part of the group, as the prophecy calls for a dragon from the mountains - and not one from the rainforest. Due to this, Glory dealt with a lot of emotional and physical abuse from her guardians, and had the idea that she was worthless drilled into her head from a young age. Glory is determined to figure out where she belongs, and how she'll be able to make a positive impact on the dragons in her life. She wants a confirmation that there's more to life than being told that she is a mistake.

Voice: Glory has a lower voice that carries an air of stifled passive-aggressiveness. She always claims that she doesn't care and she isn't bothered, but you can kind of tell that she really, really cares. A good reference for her voice is Marceline from Adventure Time. Glory has an extremely sarcastic tone to her voice, and she speaks very precisely and very sharply. She isn't cold or cruel, though - just has a prickly wall built up around her as a method of self-defense.

Voice description:

  • (annoyed) "What am I going to do? Round up some scary RainWings to sleep on your roof? I thought no one was afraid of my tribe."

  • (sarcastic) "Yeah. It would make more sense if they'd chain you all up in a cave and starve you and ignore you for a day or two and then throw you in prison after you save one of their princesses. Oh, no, wait, that's what your mom did."

  • (desperate) "All right, sure. I'm not in the Great Magnificent Wondrous Dragonet Prophecy. Maybe no one would ever write a prophecy about a RainWing. Maybe no dragon in Pyrrhia expects any of us to have an important destiny or do anything worthwhile. But this? Sleeping all day in a patch of sun? Is that all I'm good for — all any RainWing is good for? There must be more to us than this. There must be more to me."

Character Overview: Starflight is one of the five protagonists of Season 1, and one of the prophesized "dragonets of destiny". He is a six year old night dragon (around sixteen in human years), and is the nervous, bookish, rambley, know-it-all member of the main quintet. His character arc revolves around how he had a lot of faith in the legends of night dragons being powerful, majestic, and all-knowing. However, his image of what his tribe is like is quickly shattered once he's out in the real world, and Starflight finds himself torn between becoming a scheming, lying member of his tribe (but feeling like he can finally do something right), or trying to be brave enough to stand up for what he believes in.

Voice: Starflight has a slightly higher pitched (but still masculine) voice. Very much speaks like how you'd imagine a stereotypical nerdy, anxiety-prone character to talk. He has a tendency to lecture and go on and on about various topics that he's read about, but can easily be driven to stammering and stuttering as soon as he's faced with conflict.

Voice description:
  • male young adult

  • (self-loathing) "Crazy-brave is the opposite of me. Crazy-brave is Tsunami. Crazy-brave would have been turning around to fight all four dragonets at once, which is what she would have done. Sitting in a dark hole? Waiting for someone else to deal with my problem? She's right about one thing: that does sound like me."

  • (worried, trying to take charge) "Shouldn't we stay under the trees? What if a patrol spots us? I mean — We must stay under the trees. All right. Yes. Everyone back into the trees right now."

  • (determined) "We're only dragonets. We shouldn't be leading anyone to their deaths. But this is happening no matter what we do. We have no choice now. You can't be the most cowardly dragon on Pyrrhia right now. Remember, you've read over all the history scrolls you could find about famous battles. Now use that knowledge. It's time to prove that you really do belong in this prophecy."

Sunny

Character Overview: Sunny is one of the five protagonists of Season 1, and one of the prophesized "dragonets of destiny". She is a six year old desert dragon (around sixteen in human years), and is the happy-go-lucky, uber-positive, sweet, always smiling member of the main quintet. Her character arc revolves around how she’s underestimated and often called “weird” and “stunted”, due to her small size and odd scale color for a desert dragon. Even though she tries to keep an upbeat attitude, she’s not stupid, and hates how other dragons see her as nothing more than being silly and childish. She is the character with the most faith in the prophecy, and believes that she is the way she is because she’s special.

Voice: Sunny has a medium-high pitched voice, and always sounds like she has a smile on her face. Her voice definitely isn’t “extremely high-pitched annoying anime girl”, rather, it’s sweet and full of energy. She’s not crazy-upbeat, just tends to look on the bright side. However, she’s still very expressive.

Voice description:

  • (delighted) “Glory, you have a cute furry thing! Can I hold it, please please?”

  • (annoyed) “As if acting happy means I don't really care about anything. As if I just need to be distracted and I'll forget about the whole point of our existence and all the dragons who are counting on us. As if my brain were the size of a blueberry, three MOONS.”

  • (determined) “It's not optimism, it's faith. There's a reason we're here. What we do today is part of it, but there's more, too, and we have to survive to make it all happen.”

Character Overview: Peril is a seven year old (around seventeen in human years) mountain dragon, and a major recurring character in Season 1. She serves as the royal champion of Queen Scarlet in her terrifying arena, due to being hatched with too much fire (meaning that anything she touches immediately burns). She begins as a brutal killer who doesn’t seem to really understand the consequences of her actions, due to the heavy manipulation she was undergoing from her queen. She’s a bit awkward and insensitive, but has a good heart deep down, and will do the right thing when push comes to shove.

Voice: Peril has a bright, expressive, medium-pitched voice. Her tone has the feeling of someone who is trying to make themself sound more mysterious and imposing than they really are. She’s positively oozing with teenage angst.

Voice description:

  • (proud) “Her Majesty said I might as well follow my true nature. That's how she raised me — letting me be myself, giving me dragons to kill. Maybe you'd feel better if you could be who you really are.”

  • (nervous) “I'm going to go say hi to Clay! I mean to uh, him and his friends. So I can tell him what I did to Scarlet! I mean, tell all of them. What Ruby did, technically. But with my help! He's going to be so excited. Don't you think? So excited? I mean, not that it's any big deal. Well, I guess it's kind of a big deal that I stopped his, like, super worst enemy from coming after him. He'll be happy about that. Right? Not that it matters. Why am I nervous? I'm not! STOP BEING NERVOUS, PERIL. Ha ha! That'll work.”

  • (displeased) “I thought I was born a killer, but it turns out I wasn't. Queen Scarlet made me that way... or I let myself become that way. It's like I chose it without knowing I chose it. But you were born that way. You knew what you were like, and you chose to be something else. I guess I feel like I can't be one of you unless I can do that, too.”

Character Overview: Queen Scarlet is an adult mountain dragon, and a major recurring character in Season 1. She’s a viciously wicked queen, and serves as a major antagonist that the dragonets have to face when she captures them all for her arena (where she watched dragons fight to the death for her entertainment). Scarlet is malicious, vengeful, and sinister, and doesn’t hold any real value for anyone else’s life besides her own.

Voice: Scarlet’s voice is low and nasally, dripping with sarcasm and false promises. She speaks clearly and coldly, and her laugh is a high, strange, hollow cackle. Very much the vibe of a 90s-era Disney villain.

Voice description:
  • female adult
  • (furious) “Now really, this is getting insulting. You're in my territory. Apparently you're living under my mountain. I am only the most important dragon for hundreds of miles. How dare you not recognize me?”

  • (resentful) “I know what you want, and it's not going to work! He's never going to love you! You can keep trying to save his friends, but no one will ever love you except me! I'm the only one who accepts you the way you are! You'll always be a monster to everyone else!”

  • (mocking) “When you win? How thrillingly hilarious. After all the challengers I've killed, you think you stand any chance at all? My mousy daughter who can barely speak in a room with more than two other dragons in it.”

Character Overview: Princess Burn is an adult desert dragon, and a major recurring character in Season 1. She is one of the three candidates to take the desert throne, and a major antagonist that the dragonets face. Burn is known for being cruel, brutal, violent, and the eldest and strongest of the three sisters. Queen Scarlet is her ally, and she is widely feared throughout the continent.

Voice: Burn’s voice is low and gruff, and filled with malice. She’s a terrifying enemy in every sense of the phrase, and absolutely sounds like it. She chooses her words as if saying the wrong one in response would immediately result in your death.

Voice description:
  • female adult
  • (furious) "No prophecy decides what happens to me. I'm not letting a bunch of words or baby dragons decide when I die or what I bow to. We can have peace when my sisters are dead and I am queen of the SandWings."

  • (aggravated) "It is. I really need to kill something. It's been too long since I last ripped out a dragon's throat."

  • (disturbingly pleased) "Much better. You're lucky you're such a useful general, or I would just take those fascinating talons for my tower and be done with these boring arguments. Oh, and Six-Claws. The next time you feel like questioning my orders, remember that your friend has another wing ... and a tail ... and three working legs, all of which could meet with even more horrible accidents. Understood?"

Character Overview: Princess Blister is an adult desert dragon, and a major recurring character in Season 1. She is one of the three candidates to take the desert throne, and a major antagonist that the dragonets face. Blister is known for being cunning, clever, and smarter than the other two sisters put together. The war was her idea, due to the fact that she knew she couldn't defeat Burn in a fair fight. She's extremely dangerous, and every word she says is carefully chosen.

Voice: Blister's voice is low and eerily calm, with a smooth quality to it. She has a way of speaking that makes herself sound totally in control, as if she's always the smartest dragon in the room. Blister changes the way she speaks depending on who she's attempting to manipulate.

Voice description:
  • female adult
  • (false sweetness) "I'm sure you've heard things about me, too. But you can't always trust rumors and propaganda, especially when it comes to a big responsibility like the prophecy. So ask me anything you like. I'd be delighted to help you make your decision — although of course I hope you'll choose me."

  • (manipulative) "Don't you have one more question for them? Why they killed all of your heirs. I mean, obviously it was them, right? Working together. It's the perfect climax to the story. Just like one of your brilliant mysteries. The Claws of Murder, for instance. Or A Tail of Blood. That one was genius. It was so that Tsunami could return as the only living heir, of course. If they killed off all the other possible heirs, she would become more and more valuable. A bargaining chip if they ever needed it. A powerful tool when they wanted to use her."

  • (cold) "For now, I'm finally just one step away from the throne that is rightfully mine. And that step, of course, is killing you."

Character Overview: Morrowseer is an adult night dragon, and a major recurring character in Season 1. He is the dragon that delivered the infamous prophecy that states that five dragonets will come to save the day. He is a cruel, mysterious, and powerful force that the dragonets find themselves facing time and time again, as he has a very particular way he wants his prophecy to play out - and this quintet seems determined to screw it up.

Voice: Morrowseer's voice is extremely deep and rumbling. He exudes power and mystique with everything he says, and when he raises his voice, he strikes terror into anyone within earshot. Morrowseer is an intimidating figure that one would do well not to cross.

Voice description:

Perhaps you even had a vision of my visit today. No doubt you already know that I’m going to take you into the next cavern for a private conversation.”

He is the most agreeable and pleasant of the guardians, but often appears weak and cowardly. He wants to bring peace above all else, but does not have the strength to do it himself.

Voice: Webs' voice is described as "maddeningly slow". It's of a medium pitch, and he speaks very cautiously and a bit slippery. He sounds like he wants to do the right thing, but he'll always falter before someone of a higher status than him.

Voice description:
