Where's Harry

Where's Harry

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION:

Where's Harry is a student short film that embeds itself in the tradition of surrealist and expressionist cinema to explore the complex power dynamics and perspectives in the common unseen strained relationships between parents and their children, between pressure and freedom.

As voice actors, you will get to play the incredibly important roles of the parents whose voice over conversation about a recent acceptance letter takes place in contrast with the actual events unfolding with their son Harry on screen. The dramatic irony that this juxtaposition - your acting - creates is the emotional heart of the short film!

WHAT TO EXPECT:

The script for this short is only five pages long and the dialogue itself is sparse. The final recording session should take no more than 60–90 minutes and will likely be completed in a single session.

Disclaimer: This shorts dramatic irony comes in large part from non-graphic visual allusions to self-harm. Your roles as voice actors have nothing to do with this aspect of the story, regardless if you are sensitive to these topics please be aware that they are touched on in this short film.

CONCLUSION:

As a director I am very excited to work with your amazing talent to bring our story to life! If you have any questions and/or concerns, feel free to reach out.

Role assigned to: Andrew Hagen

Father or "Ted" is a 35-50 year old (flexible) man and one of the two main actors in this short student film. He like the mother is symbolic of the everyday parent that an audience member could relate to or recognize. Given the nature of this story, he also needs to portray a subtle sense of control veiled by misguided love or protection over his child although he is more the voice of reason an restraint in contrast with the mother. This role will involve switching between and exploring the nuances of care, power and the moral spectrum of parenthood.

TL;DR

Just be able to do an adult mans voice and convey emotions with subtlety.

This will be shown at several film festivals and include actor credit!

Role assigned to: A sassy Sasquatch appeared!✨

Mother or "Sharon" is a 30-50 (flexible) year old woman and one of the two main actors in this short film. She is symbolic of the everyday mother that an audience member could relate to or recognize. Given the nature of this story, she needs to portray a subtle sense of control veiled by misguided love or protection over her child. This role will involve switching between and exploring the nuances of care, power and the moral spectrum of parenthood. The script itself is not an argument with your husband Ted, its an expression of power.

This is a live-action short film. The actors will not appear on screen; their performances will be heard as voice-over dialogue over the live-action footage.

An important note to performers is this needs to feel like a real conversation/argument you'd have with your spouse not wanting your child to overhear. That being the case, a naturalistic performance over melodrama and exaggeration is what's needed for this role.

For your submission, you may use the audition lines or lines from another performance if you feel that better showcases your talent.

Please follow the instructions and read your lines from this short PDF of an excerpt from the script: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PmTBBCLBZnSXQyhgpz1IWRGWUuyvmhECYUsyP5LUlA4/edit?usp=sharing
