UNDERTALE the Movie (Fan-Made for YouTube)
Project Overview
Hello, my name is Colin Snider and I’m the director of this exciting project: UNDERTALE the Movie. This will be a 2D animated film adaptation of the game we know we love. Don’t take this as a cash grab or something completely unfaithful to the source material, we fully intend on making this film authentic AND free to watch on YouTube! Despite the nature of this being a film free for all to watch, we still need voice actors (that’s you!) to voice these iconic characters, and they will be paid for their work! I’m super excited to be able to lead this project amongst a small creative team, much like how the game was made almost entirely by Toby Fox himself. Here are some important things to know for those who are auditioning:
1: READ THE ROLE DESCRIPTIONS. They contain important notes about the characters for those who aren’t familiar with Undertale, as well as tips for those auditioning. We’ve heard fun voices for all these characters, but we don’t want to copy or imitate them.
2: RECORD MULTIPLE TAKES. The best way for us to hear your range is if we hear you say lines multiple times. Two or three takes is ideal.
3: GOOD MIC QUALITY. This is kind of a given considering the nature of this massive undertaking. No offense to those who don’t own a good mic or can’t afford one. Believe me, I know there are some hidden gems out there. However, in ensuring the quality of this film, we have to also consider audio quality. We’re sure you understand.
4: CALLBACKS. In all likelihood, we’ll like several peoples’ auditions. Not to worry! If we want to hear more, we’ll reach out to you. Just be prepared for us to reach out.
5: BE CREATIVE. Don’t feel restrained by what we write in the role descriptions. Make it your own! Keep it to a fair amount, of course. (For example, Toriel has bonus points for those who can sing. Wanna sing something short in her voice? Go for it!)
6: PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE. This project, as stated, is a MASSIVE undertaking. Animation is not easy and not cheap. There may be few and far between times that we ask you to record. Don’t worry, you’ll be compensated fairly for everything we do. All we ask is that you remain patient alongside us. This will all be worth it in the long run.
That should be everything! Have fun auditioning; we can’t wait to hear the talent all of you harbor!

The child protagonist of our story, Frisk doesn’t have much to say very often. They more often choose to show their feelings through action. Despite their limited communication, Frisk is very kind, caring, and faces fear beyond many obstacles through the power of DETERMINATION. (Most of Frisk’s recordings in the film will be quiet sounds, with a choice few moments of speaking. Please give two or three takes of each line.)

Frisk: …I’m Frisk.
Frisk: Mm-hm. (yes/approving)
*Anything you want, get creative!*
Our main antagonist, Flowey is an extremely villainous and sadistic, well, flower. Don’t be fooled by his sweet exterior, his true colors are nothing like his appearance. He has a plan to show both the Underground and the world above the true meaning of “kill or be killed.” (If you find yourself capable of voicing both Flowey AND Asriel, PLEASE audition for Asriel on his own segment. We’d love some consistency for the plot! If not, don’t feel pressured to. It will not affect our casting decisions. Make sure to record two or three takes of each line.)

Flowey: Howdy, I’m Flowey! Flowey the Flower!
Flowey: WOW. You really are an IDIOT.
Flowey: I can’t understand it… why won’t you kill me?
The first friendly face of our adventure, Toriel is the caretaker of the Ruins. With motherly instinct, she leads our protagonist through what she wishes to be their new home. She knows the dangers of the Underground, and she will do whatever it takes to keep you safe. Yes, whatever. (Bonus points if you can sing, we’re considering having her at least hum or maybe lightly sing as to give her the most “motherly” vibe possible. Consider adding it to your audition! Make sure to record at least two or three takes of each line.)

Toriel: What a poor pathetic creature, torturing such an innocent youth…
Toriel: Surprise! Butterscotch cinnamon pie! We’ll hold off on snail pie for tonight.
Toriel: Go back to bed. If you don’t… they, Asgore, will kill you.
Sans. Forget a couch potato, this guy is the couch. Our first friend outside of the Ruins and a reappearing character through the story, he’s always quick to tell a joke and keep things breezy. He finds it hard to care about almost anything… but he loves his little brother, and he’s good at following through promises, even though he hates making them. (Sans seems very silly on the surface, but it’s more about his lack of caring about most things. The biggest contrast to this is when he DOES care, when he gets serious about something. I want to see good contrast between his normal speaking voice and his attentive and almost mysterious voice. Not TOO different, but more than just a pitch change. Make sure to record at least two or three takes of each line.)

Sans: heya. i’m sans. sans the skeleton.
Sans: i’ve gotten a ton of work done today. a skele-ton.
Sans: level with me kid… have you ever heard of a talking flower?
Immediately AFTER we meet Sans, Papyrus is a powerful presence in our story. Not powerful in the sense of physical strength, powerful in his character. Loud, eccentric, and actually very kind. He’s a bit naive at times, as he believes anyone can be good and do good if they really try. He also doesn’t exactly have any friends, but our protagonist could change that… (Papyrus may be one of the most difficult characters to voice on a range basis. You need his loud and silly side, his somber and kind side, and somewhere in between, and it must be available at ALL TIMES! Make sure to record at least two or three takes of each line.)

Papyrus: *GASP* A HUMAN!
Papyrus: I, the Great Papyrus, will capture you!
Papyrus: You’ll… be my friend? Really?
Undyne, the head of the Royal Guard. The toughest person you’ll meet in the Underground. Despite her harsh outside, she’s not just mean for the sake of being mean. She sees potential in everyone, and always does her best to help them improve. She’s not trusting of our protagonist in the beginning, but that just might turn around. (As mentioned in the description, it really comes to nailing her booming voice and her sentimental moments and their difference from each other. Make sure to record two or three takes of each line.)

Undyne: NGAHHH! I’ll make you humans pay for what you’ve done!
Undyne: You’re gonna be my friend. The perfect revenge!…. uh, why don’t you take a seat?
Undyne: The way you hit me just now… you’re not a wimpy loser. You’re a wimpy loser with a big heart!
The royal scientist, Alphys is most definitely a genius. However, that doesn’t exactly mean she always does the smartest thing. Nerdy and shy, she really wants to make friends with people like you… or Undyne. However, she’s the type to avoid changes and shove her problems into a deep dark secret basement… that’s normal, right? (Many Alphys voices I’ve seen tend to go heavy on the “nerd” voice, and that’s not entirely a bad thing, but we want her voice to capture her whole personality, not just the nerdy part. Show us some variety! Make sure to record two or three takes for each line.)

Alphys: Oh. My. Gosh. The human. Is in. My lab!
Alphys: I uh… may or may not have invented a killer robot that specifically enjoys killing, well, humans.
Alphys: No no no! Why do I keep making things worse?! I-I gotta go…
Imagine your favorite eccentric and flashy radio/TV host and crank the dial up to 11. With Mettaton, you probably can, because he’s a robot! And a strong one at that, since he’s designed by Alphys. As far as he’s concerned, he doesn’t actually hold disdain towards anyone. He simply wants to put on the best show anyone’s ever seen. (Don’t just make his voice radio-host like, but don’t just make it eccentric like his audio byte from the game. Find another happy medium! Make sure to record at least two or three takes of each line.)

Mettaton: Welcome, everyone, to tonight’s quiz show!
Mettaton: There’s one ingredient we’re missing… YOUR SOUL!
Mettaton: Ohhhh yes.
The king of the underworld. Decided he would collect 7 human souls in order to free his people from the Underground, and our protagonist just happens to be number 7. Unlike his grim mission, he’s actually a very kind and gentle giant. A powerful king with a heart like a bouquet of flowers. What will happen when he faces off against our protagonist? (Gentle is not an exaggeration, this man is so kind, it makes you realize just how badly he was hurt to make this his mission. He may have a deep voice, but it has to be deep voice with nuance. This may be one of the most emotional performances in this story. Make sure to record two or three takes of each line.)

Asgore: Sorry, one second! I’m almost done watering these flowers.
Asgore: Maybe, we could be like a family…
Asgore: Human, I’ve had enough. I just want to see my wife. I just want to see my child.
The lost prince of the Underground, son of Asgore and Toriel. After his tragic death for Chara and transformation into a soulless and uncaring flower, he is reawakened after obtaining all the souls of the Underground, including the human souls. Normally, he’s very kind and loving, but he’s back to destroy the universe. Only our protagonist can stop him, and they’re carrying all of monsterkind’s hopes and dreams with them. (Asriel has two forms: him as a kid and him as the “God of Hyperdeath” as he calls himself. If you think he should have two different voices for them, do it! If not, don’t! Up to you. Make sure to record at least two or three takes of each line.)
