Project Overview
Welcome to the most morally bankrupt hour on cable television.
Turn on the News is a YouTube object show by Steamed Milk Studio. A satire/comedy/drama set in the gleaming Manhattan headquarters of conservative ABS News—the nation's most popular cable news channel—the show follows two mismatched anchors as they navigate the daily absurdity of their barely-fictional version of America.
Joey DeLamp is everything wrong with everything. The son of ABS Corp. owner Antonia DeLamp, he's a vain and unfortunately funny right-winger who mistakes privilege for insight and controversy for content.
Opposite him sits Maude Lipstick, a once-idealistic leftist journalist/podcaster who traded her integrity for a primetime slot. She's very well respected and is loved all across New York. She is trying her best to bring truth and integrity to a clown show.
Together, they host ABS's flagship debate segment—a theatrical performance designed to simulate free speech while serving corporate interests. They spar on and off-screen. No matter how hard Maude tries, their nightly sparring matches aren't about finding truth; they're about keeping viewers distracted while the real world burns outside their soundproof studio.
Episodes will be like 15 minutes tops. We want this first episode out by the end of the year.

*newscaster voice* ABS News 7:00 I’m Maude Lipstick here with Joey DeLamp. We begin tonight with a look inside the Category 5 Hurricane Lloyd, which is wreaking havoc on Haiti. We’ve got Dustin Broom on the scene. Dustin?
*dramatically but earnestly* This is the worst day of my life. Look at me... I used to be in the streets. I was young. And hot. I used to have a podcast!
*angrily* Joey, you're a goddamn moron. Nobody as stupid as you should have a platform this big. It's like giving a toddler a loaded gun in a lecture hall.
Character Essence: Cold, intimidating media mogul and Joey's 75 year old mother. Always wears these big sharp sunglasses, even indoors. Has been seen smoking two cigarettes at one time.
Voice Direction: Clipped, authoritative tone with no warmth. Old Italian immigrant with an edge of permanent disappointment. Should speak slightly slower than others, giving her words weight. Unfortunately I have no idea what an old Italian woman sounds like so that's your job.

Forget the other channels. The movie division. Forget the useless god damn waste of money Cosmopolitan magazine. Out of everything that belongs to me, the only things I love are you, and ABS News. I put those two things together and you still find a way to disappoint.

Voice Direction: Kind of sounds like Ben from Veep #ripoff. Speaks with a lazy confidence and occasional chuckle. Should sound older.

EP is the executive producer of Joey and Maude's segment. She has to play peacemaker and quell the two anchors' frustrations, so her voice should be sweet. Really good at her job. Morally bankrupt and is focused on supporting the company.
Voice Direction: She's kind of like an HR lady on steroids. Fast paced. Gentle-parenting type.

Joey, Maude, you two are rockstars, ok? And this segment is your music. Beautiful, reactionary music.
Passionate activist, theatrical speaker, true believer. Leads a protest group that gathers around ABS's ground floor every day. Moral center of the show.

Everybody in that building - from executive to hairstylist, has to see us when they clock in, and when they clock out. Today in particular, we’re protesting a TRULY despicable foreign affairs issue. And we’re not leaving until we’re satisfied.
We've been out here for 2 hours and you're talking about lunch. Please don't piss me off.
If this doesn't wake Ms. Lipstick up, I don't know what will. She should be coming down the elevator to join us as we speak.
You'll be designing backgrounds for the show! The show is animated in Adobe Animate so ideally you could do them vector-based (Illustrator would work). Think newsrooms, break rooms, and street views of Manhattan. Regarding style, show me whatever you got. You'll be paid $50 a background, and that rate is negotiable.
