The Shadowy Slicker: A Noir Audio Drama - Episode Two

The Shadowy Slicker: A Noir Audio Drama - Episode Two

Project Overview

What is the Shadowy Slicker?

Hello, everyone. The Shadowy Slicker  is an upcoming noir audio drama that focuses on the life of Amory DeWolfe, an anti-hero and freelance criminal who is only out to make money. The audio drama is set in 1967 Cleveland, Ohio, where only the crooked survives. The tone is dark and grimy, so I need characters who embody loose morality in this post-Casablanca world. The world is unrelentless and cold, much like Ohioan winters.

This is a love letter to film noir and it’s kin. Noir has always been one of my favorite genres in any media due to their loner heroes, dark and intriguing storylines, and suspense. The style of the Shadowy Slicker is full of Amory’s narration and unique descriptions, as well as era-appropriate jazz.

While the plot is simple enough, the dialogue and tone enriches the narrative, so I need people who will not just read their lines, but emotes charm into every sentence.

For episode two, I need two males (one major, one minor) and two females (both major).

Requirements:

  • If you are decided for a character, please be committed. I will be scheduling an hour practice once a week on Skype. I expect that if you are casted, you will be punctual in getting your lines to me and making the practices. I can forgive anything and everything if you communicate with me what your problems are.

  • Microphone quality is essential. All audio must not have grading background noises, clipping issues, fans, etc. It must also be at least semi-professional (ie, no smartphones or gaming headset mics). Obviously, you must also have reliable recording software (Audacity, Garage Band, etc.)

  • This is NOT a paid position right now. You will be credited on the official website and at the end of the episode.

  • I want to reiterate that this project will take a very long time to finish. I may also ask for re-takes or new lines from time to time. Communication is very important to me because I want to make the best quality audio drama I possible can.

  • The deadline for both voice actors will be on November 18th, 2017 at 9pm EST.

  • He is in his early to mid 30s. His voice is energetic and has a lot of brazenness. I’m looking for someone for a mid to high voice.

  • Caprice is a member of the mafia, specializing in prostitution. So, while he enjoys having fun, he is also incredibly serious about his job, wanting to advance up the latter. He is not an evil person or a sociopath, but always puts himself before others. He is a very sophisticated and a well-mannered person, sort of like a 1960’s Bond villain. The relationship between Caprice and DeWolfe is of a sort of boss/disgruntled employee relationship, so their communication should be one full of understanding and back-and-forth dialogue.

  • (coy/sarcastically) Well, to tell you the truth, I miss your pretty face. It’s been keeping me up nights. Plus, you make absolute wonderful company. Sleep is overrated anyway. Come have a drink with me. We can talk about your future.

  • (getting slightly irritated): I guess I can understand. You’re comfortable with your status of scum and reporting to bosses just cramps your style, I suppose. It’s something that I don’t want to inform the “club” about. Besides, this is small potatoes and I thought you could use the work.

  • (matter-of-fact): Exactly. She spilled some wine and the carpet looked dastardly, if I may say so, so I had my men tear it out and put in some red wood flooring. It has a special coating on it to prevent staining of any kind. Wine, or other … things. (pause) Her clumsiness won’t stain the carpet anymore.

  • Mid 20s - Mid 30’s. She is an African-American whore who works for Caprice. She is a very classy and a bookworm, often quoting lines from classic literature. She is very intelligent.

  • Her voice should be snazzy and either very warm or very cold in different situations. She also has a very, very slight French accent, so anyone who can pull it off gets bonus points.

  • (snobbish) So that’s like saying you, with an incredibly boring name like Amory should be getting rejected by girls left and right and having a superiority complex that will eventually lead you to drop out of Princeton and become a hobo. Not, of course, that you’d know who I’m talking about…

Well, that’s the only place where I’ve heard the name. I just think it’s interesting. Y’know, Fitzgerald used that name from the word “amour”, meaning love in French? Blaine wanted to be loved, which is ironic since his name is the definition of love and yet he never got any.

  • Well, my mom was a French teacher over at Lemont High School. She was so enthralled by the language that when she had me, it was only fitting to have a French name. Of course, Flanagan is a purely Irish name, but nobody really cares.

  • Personally, I think that racist prick only did those things to stir up controversy. I was outraged when I heard what happened, of course. I don't think that a white bigot should lead to four dead people.

  • Mid 20 - Mid 30s

  • One of the few female police officers in the city, she holds her position and duties very seriously. She is friends with Paulette.

  • I can’t give away too many details right now, but I need an actress with a great emotional and vocal range. She only has a few lines in this episode, but becomes a crucial character later.

  • Hello. Listen, I have a tight schedule this morning, I have to be at the Captain's office by eight, so we should - (immediately stops)

  • (nastily) I must insist that he leave. I need to talk with you. Is he bothering you? Should I escort him out?

  • (harsh) Come on, out you go. Don’t make me use this.

No voice preference.

  • Sure, that's twitching.

  • I don’t know where that is.

  • Where to?
