Project Overview
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome back to a brand new season of The Shadow Radio Recreation Series! This Season's first episode is about an expensive string of pearls and murder motivated by hate, jealousy, and greed. This is the Shadow and "The Case of the Dead Man's Shoes!
Lamont Cranston and Margot Lane were strolling in the park when they met Horace Blake (a well- to-do banker). He claims that Archie Windsor (a wealthy playboy) has proposed to his only daughter Ellen Blake (his 19-year-old daughter). With much anger, Horace swears that he will stop the marrage if it's the last thing he does...! Hours later, Lamont and Margot discover's the body of Archie Windsor lying in his own blood! With the investigation in the works; Lamont questions Leon Selby (Windsor’s secretary and cousin) if there were any ememies that he had or any jewelry stolen... Now with a location, Lamont and Margot rush to the jewelry shop known as Bentley's and speak to the Manager Mr. Sanders.

Horace Blake is a well to-do banker who is inrage with the idea of a playboy (Archie) marrying his only daughter Ellen, who is only nineteen years old. He is know to be a kind-hearted man but he swore that he would stop this marrage if its the last thing he does....

He – he hit me . . . struck me with his walking stick. He – he tried to kill me!
No, but he was here. We just happened to meet. . . . We got into an argument . . . and then (Groans) . . . my head!
Six. (Enraged) And now – now he wants to add my daughter to the list. She’s only nineteen!
I’ve got to stop it. I’ve tried everything. I’ve begged him, pleaded with him, warned him to stay away from Ellen . . . but he only laughs at me. I – I’m going out of my mind
Talk to her! She won’t listen to me. She’s madly in love with him. . . . You know the kind of terrible fascination a man like that can have for a young girl. . . .
You have? . . . Wait a minute. Your face is familiar. Aren’t you . . .
Yes. . . . Mr. Cranston, can’t you help me? Isn’t there something you can do to stop this – this terrible marriage?
(Emphatically) Well, it is in my book. And I’m going to stop it, Mr. Cranston. . . . Do you hear? I’m going to stop it, if it’s the last thing I ever do!

Ellen Blake is the only daughter to Horace Blake. She met Archie and then quickly fell madly in love with him. Even though her father forbids them on marrying Archie; Ellen wants to be with him.

(Calls) Mr. Cranston! . . . Mr. Cranston, please!
(Cuts in) I don’t care about the evidence. I – I know my father didn’t do it. He – he couldn’t, Mr. Cranston. He’s the gentlest, kindest person alive.
He was tricked, I tell you. Someone lured him down there . . . and planted evidence on him. Everyone in town knew how he felt about Archie. . . .
There must be a way, Mr. Cran . . . (Breaks off) Oh, there’s Selby now. Maybe he knows something. . . .
The necklace – the necklace that’s missing! . . . If my father had had anything to do with this – this awful murder – he would never have touched the pearls. He’s wealthy. . . . Someone else must have taken them.
(Quickly) No one but Mr. Windsor (Suddenly horrified) . . . and you!
You killed Archie . . . and you stole the pearls . . . and you framed my father. . . . You vile, horrible beast! I’m going to phone the . . .
(Filter) (Hysterical) Mr. Cranston! . . . Mr. Cranston, you’ve got to help me! . . .
(Filter) He’s going to kill me! He – he tied me up . . . but I got loose.
(Fuzzy filter) Please . . . locked in. . . . Save me before he comes . . . (Gasps) No! . . . No! (Screams)

A wealthy Playboy, Archie Windsor has married over 5 women, making Ellen Blake to be his sixth wife. Even though her father Horace Blake forbids them to marry; Archie wants Ellen to be his wife...

Selby! . . . Where’ve you been?
Selby . . . you’re a liar
You made a mistake, Selby. You thought I was a complete fool, didn’t you? . . . You waited till Ellen and I had left for the theater this afternoon . . . and then you substituted these cheap imitation pearls for the real ones . . . hoping I wouldn’t find out till it was too late. . .
That’s your story. You’ve watched me open it a dozen times. . . . (Menacingly) Selby . . . what did you do with those pearls?
You cheap, bungling thief! No wonder you never made good at anything. Selling, acting, gambling . . . you were always a flop.
What are you . . . (Frightened) Put down that knife!
(Gurgles and dies)

With a bad past, Leon Selby works for his cousin Archine Winsdor as his secretary. He informs Lamont Cranston about Archies life with women and how many people hated him...

Even a secretary is entitled to a day off, Mr. Windsor. . . . I’ve been downtown all day.
Why . . . yes. It’s the jewel case you had out this morning. I – I gathered that it contained the string of pearls you’d bought for Miss Blake.
How could I? The pearls were in the safe. . . . I don’t even know the combination.
(Sarcastically) And women. . . . You forgot women. . . . I never had the wonderful way with them that my famous cousin had!
(Grimly) Drop that phone, Archie. . . .
(Almost incoherent with rage) All these years . . . how I’ve hated you . . . hated fawning on you, calling you Mr. Windsor, listening to your idiotic prattling. And now you’re . . .
Yes. The police were waiting for me at the house this morning when I got back from my day off. . . . They want to question me here.
Well, frankly . . . he was just about the most self-centered man in the world. He couldn’t stand being in the background for a minute. It was always top billing for Archie Windsor. . . . He wouldn’t have it any other way.
(Cuts in) Oh, yes. . . . I did hear some conversation about it. . . . I was getting ready to leave for the day.

The Manager at the Jewlery Store "Bentley’s"; Mr. Saunders sold Archie a beautiful pearl necklace..

Indeed we did, sir . . . a very fine pearl necklace. Let me see now . . . it was delivered to Mr. Windsor four days ago.
In that case, Mr. Cranston, you’ll have to arrest me.
Yes. As a matter of fact, we gave him cash. It was just after three, so the banks were closed. He said he was leaving town last night and wanted some money.
Positive. Mr. Bentley usually waits on him . . . he’s out of town right now . . . but I’d know Mr. Windsor anywhere. His picture’s always in the paper . . . and that silver hair, the monocle, the walking stick . . . it was him all right.
