The Phantom of the Opera Online Cast Recording
Project Overview
This is it! I decided to go ahead with it, the recruitment page for The Phantom Of The Opera, first online musical recording!
Not just highlights, the entire thing, so we're looking for people with good equipment to record song and voice acting. Let's make this an absolute magnificient boom in what has been done.
There are quite a few roles that needs to be filled, and some of you may have to double as other roles as well, if this is acceptable.
for now, here are the voice ranges for the main roles:
NOTE: The Phantom and Christine has essentially been filled, however, feel free to try out for them if you wish to do so as well. Nothing is set in stone. :-)
The Phantom: Baritone, bordering on tenor
Christine: Soprano, very much soprano
Piangi: Tenor
Carlotta:Soprano/Mezzo Soprano
Raoul: Tenor on the edge of baritone
Andre & Firmin are both casual baritons
Madame Giry: Alto
Meg Giry: alto/Soubrette

: The Phantom is the guy who wears the mask and is deformed. He lives in the Paris Opera House, actually, underneath the opera house in the fifth cellar. He is a musical genius who falls in love with the young ingénue Christine. He gives her music lessons in her dressing room through a mirror and by tormenting the diva Carlotta (as well as the rest of the company) he helps Christine get promoted to a lead in the Opera House’s productions. The Phantom is dynamic but mesmerizing, sensual but ghostly.

Christine is the young ingénue. She starts out as dancer with an amazing voice. She is taught by the Phantom in her dressing room how to sing. She is given the chance to sing and becomes the star of the Opera. When she was a young child she met a young boy named Raoul and when they meet again at the opera they fall in love. Christine is best friends with Meg. Christine is young and very emotional.

Raoul is the dashing, young lover. He knew Christine from her childhood and becomes smitten with her when they meet again. He is rich and stubborn at times. He does his best to protect Christine, ending in a confrontation with the Phantom.

The persian or Daroga as he is called (meaning chief of police) will help Raoul save Christine by showing him to the phantom's lair. He knew the phantom as Erik back in Persia when he built the palaze of Mazanderan for the Shah. The accent stated is wrong, but there was no choice for "Iranian" or "Persian" accent. There is some light singing with this role too.
Mme Giry: Please Monsieur, I know no more than anyone else!
Raoul: That is not true!

Daroga. Oh, but it is...

Madame Giry, you may go.My name is Mohammed Ismaël Khan. I served as the chief of police or daroga in the court of the Shah of Persia during the Rosy Hours of Mezanderan, a time of bloodlust and reprecaution in persia. He was there.
He commands the walls, the doors and the trapdoors. In my country, he was known by a name which means the 'trap door lover'
Carlotta is the resident Opera Diva who had been in leading roles many seasons before Christine came onto the scene. Her job becomes in jeopardy because of Christine’s rising stardom. Being the true diva that she is Carlotta quits the production of Hannibal after the Phantom nearly hits her with a backdrop. She comes back to hear the managers beg for her to do the production of Il Muto. Carlotta is a drama queen who feels threatened by Christine.

When one thinks of Piangi one should get the image of Pavarotti, same concept. Piangi is a classical opera singer with a really think Italian accent. He is Carlotta’s counterpart and a diva in his own right.

Meg is the young lead dancer in the corps de ballet. She is Christine’s best friend and it is she who volunteers Christine to sing when Carlotta quits the production. Her mother is the ballet mistress

Who is that girl LeFevre?
Don't fret Firmin.
Andre is one of two new managers of the Paris Opera. He is more sarcastic and worried about putting on a show. The Phantom to him is just a nuisance and he seems bothered by the drama that happens with Carlotta, Raoul, Christine, and everyone else.

If I remember rightly, Elissa has a rather fine aria in Act Three of “Hannibal”. I wonder, Signora, if, as a personal favor, you would oblige us with a private rendition?
Firmin is the other new manager. He is more serious and more worried about money and the business of the opera. He sees the phantom and all the drama that surrounds the opera house as publicity.

Okay, time to show your voice acting-skills. Being infuriated with the cast for reacting to the phantom: Good heavens! I have never known such insolence!
Madame Giry is the ballet mistress for the opera house. She has an awesome cane that she bangs on the ground a lot. Mme. Giry is very mysterious; she delivers notes to various people from the phantom. She is very strict with her daughter Meg. Mme. Giry is wise and knows the ins and outs of the opera and its residents.
Those who speak of what they know find too late that prudent silence is wise. Joseph Boquet, hold your tongue, or he will burn you with the heat of his eyes!

Okay, time to show your voice acting-skills. madame Giry sees Christine is not really there and bangs the cane and shouts "You! Christine Daaé! Concentrate, girl!"
M. Reyer is the repetiteur of the Opera Company. His main job is the run the rehearsals despite all divas. He is sarcastic and sort of a tyrant.
My diva commands. Will two bars be sufficient introduction?

There is no understudy, monsieur – the production is new.
From the beginning of the aria then, mam’selle. Gentlemen.
Buquet is your average dirty old stage hand. People think he’s nuts because he claims to have seen the Phantom. He sings a song describing how the Phantom looks to the ballet girls and is eventually killed by his hand.

The Auctioneer is exactly what you think he is. He auctions off the pieces of the opera house, including props, posters, and the infamous chandelier. He is actually from the future, 1911, as oppose to when the rest of the story takes place. The Auctioneer is a speaking character with the longest monologue in the show.
For this reason, I would like to see if there is someone with a voice sort of like Christopher Lee or Vincent Pryce to do this role, someone with a powerful voice who can talk about the darkest horrors and make you tingle.

Lot 666 then: a chandelier in pieces. Some of you may recall the strange affair of the Phantom of the Opera, a mystery never fully explained. We are told, ladies and gentlemen, that this is the very chandelier which figures in the famous disaster. Our workshops have restored it and fitted parts of it with wiring for the new electric light, so that we may get a hint of how it may look when reassembled. Perhaps we may frighten away the ghost of so many years with a little illumination. Gentlemen…
He is in charge of security during the Don Juan premiere. He blows the whistle and does the final sealing of the doors.
You understand your instructions? When you hear the whistle, take up your positions. I shall then instruct you to secure the doors. It is essential that all doors are properly secured. Monsieur le Vicomte, am I to give the order?
My men are now in position, sir.

The Hairdresser can be found as one of two Epicene men who gossip about the Countess’s affair with Serafimo, during the Il Muto performance.

Don Attilio is the Countess’s husband during the Il Muto performance. Some actors hold the word “her” for comedic purposes. Singing range: You need to be able to sing bass
GENTLE WIFE, ADMIT YOUR LOVING HUSBAND MY LOVE – I AM CALLED TO ENGLAND ON AFFAIRS OF STATE, AND MUST LEAVE YOU WITH YOUR NEW MAID
I SUSPECT MY YOUNG BRIDE IS UNTRUE TO ME I SHALL NOT LEAVE, BUT SHALL HIDE OVER THERE TO OBSERVE HER! ADDIO!
M. Lefevre is the retiring manager of the Opera House. Even though we know why he decides to retire he is very certain not to mention it to the new managers. He leaves for Frankfurt and has no intention of returning.
This way, gentlemen, this way. Rehearsals, as you see, are under way for a new production of Chalumeau’s “Hannibal”. (Sensing a hiatus in the rehearsal, he attempts to attract attention) Ladies and gentlemen, some of you may already, perhaps, have met Monsieur André and Monsieur Firmin…
My apologies, Madame Giry. (Leading ANDRÉ and FIRMIN aside) Madame Giry, our Ballet Mistress. I don’t mind confessing, Monsieur Firmin, I shan’t be sorry to be rid of the whole blessed business.
Her? Meg Giry, Madame Giry’s daughter. Promising dancer, Monsieur André, most promising.
Passarino is Don Juan’s sidekick. He lures Aminta to Don Juan. Pasarino is a Tenor

The Porter is usually a non-emotional character. He usually just shows the props for auction during the prologue.
The Marksman is the guy who shoots the gun and scares the poo out of people. It’s fun to watch all the people jump. He stands in the pit, says a few lines, and fires his gun at nothing.
