Important notes
As this is a fan-made audiobook adaptation of The Outsiders by SE Hinton, I would highly recommend reading and/or watching it before auditioning for any roles. This is not a necessary step to audition but can help a lot with character portrayal.
This audiobook is just a personal project of mine that will be shared with everyone involved. However, there is a chance of it getting posted to my small YouTube account, but I will notify everyone beforehand if this happens.
Before this very common mistake happens, I want to clarify that Socs are pronounced "soashes" (short for socials), not "socks."
I have provided YouTube links for characters so you know what they sound like/how they talk, but you don't need to sound exactly like them. I care most about portrayal.
Sorry that there are no female roles right now, as Cherry and Marcia will show up later on.
If you have any questions about this project, please send me a message and I'll respond as soon as I can :)
Character descriptions are from The Outsiders wiki

LEAD ROLE
Info: Because Ponyboy is the narrator/main character of the book, he will have A LOT of lines (you're basically reading the whole book except for other character's dialogue) so if you are not up for that or don't have the time, please do not audition for this character.
Ponyboy is a 14-year-old greaser who lives with his two older brothers, Sodapop and Darry. He gets good grades in school and is a star on the track team, but pals around with the local hoods and "doesn't use his head." He is described by Cherry Valance as sweet and dreamy and is more compassionate than some of the other greasers.

(Narration) When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.
You know what a Soc is? White trash with mustangs and madras.
An' you can shut your trap Johnny Cade, 'cause we all know you ain't wanted at home, either. And you can't blame them.
LEAD ROLE
Although he has significantly less lines than Pony, he will still have a ton since he is one of the protagonists.
Info: Johnny is the smallest in the greaser gang, despite being 2 years older than Pony. He is described as "a puppy that had been kicked too many times" and was "lost in a crowd of strangers", as he always had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes. He is very soft-spoken and quiet, a result of being neglected and verbally abused by his mother and beaten by his alcoholic father. Because of this, the gang is very protective of him as if he were their pet or little brother.

I think I like it better when the old man’s hittin’ me. (Sigh) At least then I know he knows who I am.
(Weak) Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.
You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. There's still a lot of good in the world. Tell Dally. I don't think he knows.
LEAD ROLE
Info: Dally was hardened from a tough upbringing. He spent three years on the wild side of New York and was arrested at the young age of ten. He was also treated poorly by his father which contributed to his toughness. He's tough, charismatic, and mean to many people but cares for his gang and treats them like family.

Yeah, and this time it's for good. That little broad was two-timin' me again while I was in jail.
Johnny, I ain't mad at you. I just don't want you to get hurt. You don't know what a few months in jail can do to you. Oh, blast it, Johnny...you get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me...
(Emotional) Damnit Johnny… Oh, damnit, Johnny, don’t die, please don’t die…
SUPPORTING ROLE
Info: Two-Bit is the "oldest and the wise-cracker of the bunch." He has a fun personality and enjoys make people laugh. He's almost always grinning and can never stop smarting off to the cops. He gets drunk often, but it's kind of hard to tell when he is from when he's sober.

Brother, you’re a sharp one. Where’d you two ever get to be picked up by a couple of greasy hoods like Pony and Johnny?
(Snobbish/mocking) Get thee hence, white trash, I am a Soc. I am the privileged and the well-dressed. I throw beer blasts, drive fancy cars, break windows at fancy parties.
You oughta see Kathy’s brother. Now there’s a hood. He’s so greasy he glides when he walks. He goes to the barber for an oil change, not a haircut.
SUPPORTING ROLE
Info: Darry is the oldest brother of the three Curtis brothers and became the man of the house after their parents died in a fatal car crash. He loves his brothers dearly, but Instead of being caring and understanding, he is stern and protective of them. However, this is only because he doesn't want to lose them to a boy's home. He doesn't goof around often and hates getting teased, except by Soda. Ponyboy describes him as a young man who grew up too fast and as someone handling things no one his age should have to.

When I want my kid brother to tell me what to do with my other kid brother, I'll ask you---kid brother.
(Frustrated) You don’t ever think! Not at home or anywhere when it counts!
reckon it never occurred to you that your brothers might be worrying their heads off and afraid to call the police because something like that could get you two thrown in a boys' home so quick it'd make your head spin. And you were asleep in the lot? Ponyboy, what on earth is the matter with you? Can't you use your head? You haven't even got a coat on.
SUPPORTING ROLE
Info: Soda dropped out of high school at sixteen, and he insisted that it was because he was dumb. He is idolized by his younger brother, Ponyboy, but feels like a middle-man being fought over by between both brothers in a "tug-a-war" between them. He doesn't drink alcohol and doesn't need to because he "gets drunk on just plain living". Soda enjoys racing, fighting, dancing and basically anything that would blow off steam.

Listen, kiddo, when Darry hollers at you… he don’t mean nothin’. He’s just got more worries than somebody his age ought to. Don’t take him serious…you dig, Pony?
(Chanting) I am a greaser! I am a JD and a hood. I blacken the name of our fair city. I beat up people. I rob gas stations. I am a menace to society. Man, do I have fun.
I don’t know. It’s just… I can’t stand to hear y’all fight. Sometimes… I just have to get out or… it’s like I’m the middleman in a tug o’war and I’m being split in half.
SUPPORTING ROLE
He doesn't have many lines but is still part of the main gang.
Info: Steve is Soda's best friend and works at the DX gas station with him. Although he acts rude and cocky at times, he cares for all his friends/gang members.

What were you doin', walkin' by your lonesome?
(Observing) You break up with Sylvia again?
Hate to tell you, buddy, but you have to wear clothes to work. There's a law or something.

(Overly friendly) Hey, grease! We're gonna do you a favor, greaser. We're gonna cut all that long greasy hair off.
You're the guy that killed Bob Sheldon, and he was a friend of ours. We don't like nobody killing our friends, especially greasers.
(Threatening) How'd you like that haircut to begin just below the chin?
