The Otherlands

The Otherlands

Project Overview

Hello, and thank you for checking out this project page! The Otherlands is a passion project of mine that I've been working on for the past three years, and I would absolutely love for you to be a part of it.

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ IMPORTANT:

Two very important things to note. This project is 15+. This is partly because I am 18, and that's the age I'm comfortable working with, and also because of the subject matter at hand. There's a full list of trigger warnings in the document linked below, so please check that out before you audition!

The other thing of note is that this project is not going to put out in any 'traditional' format. It's going to be a dramatic reading of a screenplay, with elements of a audio drama and podcast slipped in as well. I will upload these readings to Youtube, as well as a transcript of the screenplay itself if anybody wants/needs to read along. With that noted, this project won't be very challenging to put together, so we can focus more on the voice acting and character work than anything else!

Note number three: I did cast myself in this project. I hope that's okay. :)

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ The Premise

The Otherlands is a TV show about magic.

It's set in a small area of Oregon, where only the people who have the gene for magic can remember it. This is because of an old curse that was put up fifteen years before the story starts. The reason behind this isn't known, but will be discovered as the plot goes on! The Otherlands is its own community, with different towns and species living inside it, hidden from the rest of the world.

Eighteen-year-old Beau Landon goes missing on a seemingly normal day, leaving his younger brother Henry a set of clues that only he was supposed to find. To make matters even more complicated for Henry, these lead him to discover that he can now remember the existence of magic--something he didn't even think was possible until that very day. He discovers that Beau's disappearance has something to do with this magical world, and makes it his goal to be the one to rescue him from the clutches of the organization that took him.

With the help of his best friend, a pair of magical twins, and a boy with fire powers that they end up summoning, Henry traverses the areas of the Otherlands to try and find Beau, all the while learning about magic and the world that it hides. But the further he gets, the more he realizes that things may not be what they seem. Even the members of his friend group are hiding things... and maybe Beau isn't the person that Henry thought he was.

As the show goes on into further seasons, its revealed just how complicated the organizations trying to take down that barrier are, and the characters get themselves wrapped up in the long battle that it's caused. Helping the world should not be such a complicated feat, but different people have different ideas on what the greater good really is.

If you'd like even further notes about this premise, please check out this document I wrote that goes into more detail! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k1LpAA05mHWx506F3S-gL1Mb7voUdBfnHJ9phJa5ZWM/edit?usp=sharing

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ Extra Notes

The show highlights how nobody is truly good or bad, humans have the capability to be extremely nuanced. It also focuses heavily on character relationships (mostly platonic/familial), and how they help shape the fundamental core of a person.

Also, this a very queer-positive show. Almost the entire cast is somewhere in the LGBTQ+ community, though that's not something that's intensely focused on in the plot. There are some queer sub-plots, but it's mostly just a part of the character. Queer people are much more than their gender or sexuality, and they can grow and learn about themselves while living full lives that are focused on other things. That's something I wanted to show through The Otherlands, so most sexualities and genders are only referenced or implied through dialogue.

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ The Goal

The Otherlands is four seasons, with nine episodes in each. Even though I'm only casting for the first episode, the goal of this project would be to voice through all of them. If this pilot goes well, I'll put out more waves of casting for further characters that will appear later on!

I know that it may be discouraging to see that it's not a paid project, especially with the effort stated above, but I'm only a community college student. I currently don't have the funds to be able to do that, so I'm running this completely on my passion and love for the series.

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ For your audition! Please include your:

  • Name

  • Age

  • Pronouns

  • Timezone

  • Discord

If you want to add your setup, that would be great as well, but it's not necessary.

Thank you so much for reading all of this, and I hope to see your audition below!

Latest Updates

  • A quick thank you + New role added!

Hello, and good evening! First of all, thank you SO much for 100 submissions! I'm astounded and extremely excited to be able to look through them all and cast in just a little under two weeks! (Though don't be discouraged if you want to submit and haven't yet, I won't set anything in stone until after the deadline!)

I am going to be hiring some artists in the coming few days, so don't be alarmed if you see an update there!

Lastly--and I will not be closing this tomorrow, don't worry--I have added a new role, so feel free to check it out if you enjoy art! It's a general / scene artist role, because I think it would be fun to switch from the main logo and show some of the locations being read about when they show up!

I hope you all have a great day, and thank you again for your interest!

  • Update on artist applications!

    Hello again!!

I just wanted to note that I'm going to be hiring artist(s) at the end of this month! Everything else is still open to the stated casting date, I'd just like to get started on some art early to give the artists even more time!

That's all! Thank you again for all the auditions!

  • A quick note!

Hello! Thank you all so much for over 50 auditions?? I’m so excited and honored, and I’ve been loving listening to all of them!

That being said, please make sure to read the project description and add the required information either in your audition, or as text with it! I’m not going to disqualify anyone for a lack of this or anything, it’s just really helpful for me. (If you didn’t see it til now, don’t worry! If you could just add it to your audition in the comments, that would be great.)

But great work, everyone! I can’t wait to see more auditions as they come in. :)

The narrator will read the sluglines and stage directions from the script. They should be able to be expressive and convey emotion without overplaying it. While they are not a character, this is a very large role, considering how much of this specific script is made from description.

  • "The sun rises over a grassy street, bathing it in red and pink light. The end of the street is marked by a pathway, where the sidewalk merges with grass and dirt. A wooden sign, hammered onto a tree in the middle of the walkway, reads 'DANGER. DO NOT CROSS'. The street is near-empty apart from two lone figures."

  • "It hovers in the air for a moment, perfectly still. There's no wind, no cars passing by - and certainly nothing natural that could make it stay like that."

  • "Henry takes a deep breath. He looks out in front of him, at the grassy path that goes deeper into the trees. He steps onto the path, bracing himself - Nothing happens."

Henry (he/him [for now]), is 16, and the youngest of two siblings. His older brother going missing is what sets off the story, and is also what leads him to discover that magic is real. He's extremely curious, with a deep desire to know everything about the world around him, even if it does get him in trouble at times. He's sweet, nervous, and a little awkward--there are things about himself that not even he knows, and he's trying so hard to figure them out.

NOTE: If the project continues on for the full show, the character will figure out by season two that she's actually a trans woman. Please be okay with this if you audition!

Current voice claim: Tom Holland's Spider Man

  • (Recounting a story to the police, the opening of the show) "We went to watch the sunrise that morning. We hadn't done anything like that in years. But he took me to the cutoff. You know, the area that we're not supposed to go past? I didn't get why, but he said that he wouldn't want to watch it anywhere else."

  • (Shocked stammering) "Okay? Penn, what's going-? ... Wh- I- It just- the note just--it -- Of course I remember that, it- it flew!"

  • (Desperate, a last attempt) "Wait, please. The Incentive kidnapped my brother, and all we're trying to do is rescue him. His name is Beau Landon, he's nineteen, and he's-" [trail off, like he's passing out.]

Penn (she/her) is fifteen, and someone who knows a lot about the world of magic. Maybe too much--the world seems to know her as well, though none of her friends understand why. She's kind and loyal, and extremely fierce--never one to back down from protecting her friends when they need it. She's a major role in the project, being the person who shows Henry the world that he now has to live in.

NOTE: Penn is Black (specifically African-American), and I would love for the voice actor to be so as well for the purpose of accurate representation. Thank you!

NOTE 2: Some audition lines are taken from future episodes.

Current voice claim: Maya (Craig of the Creek)

Voice description:

  • (Soft, comforting) "There's a whole world you're going to get to explore, Hen. You're going to love it, I promise."

  • (Desperate) "I haven't seen you since I left the rest of the group! I would never say any of that--of course I want to be friends with you! I missed you, August!"

  • (At the end of her rope) "We don't talk, Lott-- Mrs. Clairmont. I haven't seen him since I was seven. He isn't going to help."

Eli (they/any) is 16 and an old friend of Penn's, but they had a falling out about a year ago. After Henry learns that magic is real, Penn recruits Eli and their twin brother to help them with their goal. Eli is outgoing and optimistic, someone who tries to look on the bright side at all times. They're sweet and great at making friends, even if they do struggle with self-doubt at times.

Current voice claim: Glimmer (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)

  • (Trying to keep the peace) "August. Can you at least not do this in front of me and- What's your name?"

  • (Excited, jumping at the chance to see their friend again) "I can come too, if you need extra help! Walking to North Acres is just a day-or-two trip, if we try hard enough and avoid people. I've done it before!"

  • (Trying to laugh something off to comfort someone) "It's okay! We needed a new mailbox anyways!"

Michelle (she/her) is Henry and Beau's mother. She's a very kind woman who loves her children more than anything in the world, and is struggling with the disappearance of her older son. She is a normal human woman without powers. She's been through a lot in the past (NOTE: If the project continues, this would be delved into), and because of her history with magic, she struggles with the effects of the memory barrier more than most.

NOTE: Some audition lines are taken from future episodes.

  • (Trying to comfort, even if she doesn't believe it herself) "They said that they're going to try their hardest to find him soon, and not to worry too much. Lots of kids his age sneak out and go on trips."

  • (Desperate, tearful) "Henry! Stop! I can't lose you, too. Beau- Beau is okay. He's going to come back soon, that's what the police said. So, please, just.. stay.."

  • (Playing along) "Magic? Well... magic is all around us." *She seems to suddenly lose her train of thought.* I'm... sorry, Henry, I think I zoned out for a moment. What were we talking about?

Catherine (she/her) is Penn's mother. She knows the secrets of the magical world, just like Penn does, and is slightly strict about how much Penn should be involved in it. She speaks slightly flat and formal, but also carries in her voice her deep care for her daughter and friends. She's a single mother trying her hardest, as everything with her ex-boyfriend / Penn's father is very... complicated. (Again, this will be heavily included if the project continues.)

NOTE: Like Penn, the character of Catherine is Black (African-American), so please only audition if you are as well. Thank you!

NOTE 2: One of the lines is potential dialogue from a future episode, as I would like to hear that as well.

Voice description:

  • (Concerned) "Are you doing okay? I know this might bring up some... memories. Everything with Beck..."

  • (Putting her foot down) "Penelope. It's a shame that Beau is missing, but I'm sure he'll be okay. I don't want you getting involved with all of that if you don't have to."

  • (After recieving a much overdue apology) "... Thank you. I've.. been waiting a long time to hear that. ... I don't forgive you. I don't think I can. But I don't want you to disappear into the blue again. That was never what I wanted"

Beau (he/him) is 18, and the missing brother of Henry. He's a nervous young man, who's trying his best to help out everyone he can--even if he does go about it in the wrong ways sometimes. He's much braver than he gives himself credit for, and has much more capability for good than he thinks he does.

NOTE: Though he only has a few lines in the first episode, Beau is an extremely important and major role if the project ends up being continued. Please keep this is mind!

NOTE 2: Most audition lines are taken from future episodes. He doesn't express much in the pilot, but I need to see the full range of the actor.

Voice description:

  • (Nervous, determined) "You'll understand in a moment. ... I hope."

  • (Spoken to a friend/higher-up) "You're a very confusing person." ... "Your speech. You're a good liar." ... *He laughs dryly.* "... I don't exactly have a choice."

  • (On the verge of a breakdown) [Note: "Ach" is pronounced like "Ash".] "Life's shit, Ach! Maybe--Maybe that's what I need! Maybe that will make me stop worrying all the damn time about things I can't control, about people that I can't even start to help! At this point, I just want to be okay. Just for a few hours."

Acheran [Ash-er-an] (any pronouns) is 19, and works for an organization called the Incentive. They come across as sarcastic and slightly flat when you first meet them, as they're not the best at social interactions anymore. How much of a moral compass they have is also extremely ambiguous. They do have the ability to take charge when needed, though, as they refuse to be a pushover (even if the people in their life are trying to turn them into one.)

Their voice is deeper to me, they're AMAB and like to appear androgynous. They think their voice being deep helps them with this.

NOTE: Though they don't appear much in the first episode, Acheran is a major role if the project is to continue. Please keep this in mind!

NOTE 2: Most audition lines are taken from future episodes. He doesn't express much in the pilot, but I need to see the full range of the actor.
