The Circus of Dr. Lao - Animatic
Project Overview
I'm working on an animatic for my animation film class final. It's based off of The Circus of Dr.Lao.

The story starts out with our main character Etoain, a 10 year old boy with an overactive imagination, who enters an antique shop and finds figurines of Dr.Lao and the magic serpent he captured. Etaoin starts playing make believe with the figurines, which transitions into him imagining the serpent's backstory.
The serpent, an old, wise, creature, sails the coast of China, until Dr. Lao's ship runs over him and submerges him underwater. The serpent reaches to the surface to inspect the ship that ran him over, until he notices that the men on board are reeling in some fish. After close inspection, he notices that the fish they're reeling in is a beautiful, shining mermaid. Fascinated, The serpent swims closer, eventually hanging his head over the board of the ship. The men notice the serpent and capture him. Dr.Lao, prideful and wise, peers over the serpent, who is at this point, debilitated and submissive. The serpent wakes up in a cage and has been bitter ever since.
Cut back to the antique shop, Etaoin's mom calls for him and he runs off, leaving the serpent and Dr.Lao figurines behind. We then see the serpent figurine come alive and sliver over to the Dr.Lao figurine, coiling around him and snapping him in two. From there the animatic ends and fades to black.

"Dr.Lao, meet your new friend. Mr.Snake"
(Etoatin posing as snake) "Hsssss... he's not my friend. He's evil"
"Hmm. That's a funny thing to say. How so?"
Older, Wise, bitter, and somber. Full of vengeance. Has sort of a hiss to his voice.
"Well, I was putting around off the China coast when Doctor Lao came along in his big old junk. The thing sailed right over me as I was submerged."
"Directly, however I came to the top to get some air, and I saw the doctor dragging what I took to be a big bright fish out of the water."
"So, I swam up alongside to see what they had caught that excited them so."
"It was a mermaid."
"I just hung my head over the prow of that junk and stared at her."
"Then while I was in my trance, Doctor Lao threw a hawser loop about my neck."
"Just like a goddamn rope they hauled me up."
"The damn hawser choked me unconcious, and when I came to, I was in a cage."
"I've been in one ever since. That was nine years ago."
"But my day is coming."
"I don't forget."
