Sylph Dagger RPG (Main and supporting cast)

Sylph Dagger RPG (Main and supporting cast)

Project Overview

Must be 18 years or older to audition.

Sylph Dagger is a goofy, turn-based point-and-click RPG about an impromptu group of heroes tasked with defeating the evil organization known as 'Rounding Down.' The game has a dry and absurdist comedy style that is typically pretty fast-paced. For the most part, I'd like performances to have good cadence, to make sure the humor isn't lost in translation. I'll try to give solid direction to help out, but feel free to ask me for clarification if you're not sure how I'd like a certain line to be read!

If cast, I'll be sending individual scenes for you to record instead of frontloading you with the entire script. This makes the lines more digestible (some of these characters have around 200 lines) but it's also more efficient to alternate between working on the script and developing the game while waiting for recordings, so I think this is the best course of action here.

For supporting characters, minor characters, and extras, I'd like to cast some voice actors as more than one role, but the more characters you audition for, the more likely you are to be cast. I don't have any specific recording requirements for the auditions (though that will change for the actual lines.) I don't have a specific deadline in mind at the moment either, but I do want to give this at least a couple weeks before I decide on casting.

Payment

As things stand now, I don't really have a budget for this project, so I can't really shell out much. I'd like to pay more if the project does well financially, but that's pretty unlikely, so for the time being, it's better to look at this as a for-fun project. If you don't have time to record for an unpaid game (especially for the main characters), that is completely understandable. I'm using my own drawings as placeholder art (which are pretty terrible.) I plan on buying better art eventually but with no real budget I'm not sure how good it will end up looking, and I'm not a professional programmer either -- just to be as transparent as possible, so you have some idea of what you're in getting into before you sign up lol

With all that out of the way, here are the audition lines!

Latest Updates

  • Changing Payment Status

    Hey everyone!

I mentioned in the original project description that I want to pay the voice actors, provided the game does well enough to justify it. This hasn't changed. However, I've gotten so many incredible auditions from very talented actors that I'm a bit worried people may have high expectations of how well the game is going to do. Because this game is very unlikely to turn a profit, I've decided to change the official payment status to "unpaid," just so people don't get their hopes up. Nonetheless, I still want to pay in the event that the game does perform well!

If you've already auditioned for this project and don't have time for an unpaid role, you can either let me know or withdraw your audition. No hard feelings! That's what I'm making this post for. I plan on casting in about a week or so, so I wanted to get this update out sooner rather than later.

Best of luck on your voice acting journey!

Tenebis (TEN-uh-bease) (Roughly 200 lines)

Unpaid
Role assigned to: Carionto

Tenebis is a shadow person who seeks out the protagonist, mistaking him for the chosen one. He initially has a mysterious aura, but is actually pure-hearted and naive. He's easily distractible (in particular, by sweets) and sympathizes with the struggles of others, even his enemies. I can imagine Tenebis having a deeper, mysterious, male voice, but I can also imagine him having a quirkier female voice.

Line 1: I am the dream visitor, Tenebis. I assure you that this is quite real...as is my dilemma. If you don't believe my words...I will greet you when you wake.

Line 2: You would do well to remember the great Victor Goldenbolt's name.

(Other character replies: I thought it was 'Goldenblade.')

Well, whatever. We need to find him and fast.

Line 3: Not to worry. It's only vanilla. I think.

Mabel (Roughly 200 lines)

Mabel is the chosen one, the hero prophesied to defeat Rounding Down. She initially seems righteous; however, it's revealed that she's a con artist who wrote the prophecy herself in order to get free perks at the amusement park. She's fairly selfish and greedy, and not above using underhanded tactics to realize her goals, but she will still do the right thing when push comes to shove. She's also fairly impatient and has little tolerance for other characters wasting time.

I can imagine her having a mid-to-high pitched voice similar to Laura Bailey or Alexis Tipton. Her deliveries should generally be fast-paced. Avoid timid or meek deliveries if possible.

Line 1: I can't believe there was really a monster in the lake. I thought it was a lie Rounding Down came up with to lure me out here. Guess even they're not that dumb.

(Line 2 context: another character says that she's 'just a crook,' and she's responding sheepishly as though she's mistaking it for a compliment)

Line 2: (Sheepish, flattered) Ah...well...I don't know if I'd say 'crook...')

(Line 3 context: another character is spouting riddles to the party, but every line of the riddle seems to mostly be saying the same thing as the last)

Line 3: (Impatient, fast-paced) Is every line gonna be the same?

Role assigned to: N7Merk

Alban is one of the five officers of Rounding Down. He appears once at the beginning and returns later on in the game. He's a gruff villain with a short fuse.

Line 1: You've got some nerve showing your face in front of us after what you did. And you've caught me in a bad mood.

Line 2: Yes...once we learn of where the Sylph Dagger is located, we'll be unstoppable.

Line 3: (Abrupt) It's a straight shot from here. You can't miss it.

Forest Spirit (20-25 lines)

The Forest Spirit is an enigmatic being said to be able to answer any question. While this is technically true, he answers nearly every question with “I don't know” rendering the ability a lot more mundane. As such, he ends up fairly useless in most encounters. I think a deep, powerful voice will work really well here. I'll probably end up adding echo effects to it.

(Line 1 context: this is his signature line, and I'd like it to be delivered with powerful confidence rather than snark. The 'don't' isn't heavily emphasized, but I think placing some emphasis there helps to relay the tone I'm going for.)

Line 1: I don't know.

Darkedge (Roughly 60 lines)

cast offsite

Darkedge is a parody of an anime edgelord archetype. While I want to steer clear of slower performances for most characters, Darkedge is a deliberate exception here – he takes himself way too seriously and his edginess is heavily exaggerated. Darkedge is one of Rounding Down's top officers, but deep down he is lonely and desperate for companionship. He's an undercover employee at Caramel King, though he's unusually dedicated to the job. For his voice, I'm looking for “anime badass” voice.

(Line 1 context: the 'hero' emphasis should be dripping with venom)

Line 1: There are whispers of a dangerous monster dwelling in the lake. I'm sure this reputable hero is seeking to crush it.

Line 2: When I saw you leave the office with that dejected look on your face...I was furious. A betrayal like that is unforgivable.

Line 3: Now then, I'm leaving. But remember this...the treats at Caramel King are even more delicious than our competitors', and only half the price. (Evil laugh)

Umbra Guard (5-10 lines)

The sole guard of the city of Umbra. He takes his job very seriously, but remains pretty careless overall. Most guards in the game are essentially useless and this one is no exception.

Line 1: Yes...but more recently, there have been eerie voices coming from inside. Chanting...laughing...occasionally even a barking dog.

(Line 2 context: 'laughing and sometimes a dog' is spoken as though referencing a single crisis, rather than two separate threats)

Line 2: I'm the only guard in the city. We don't have the manpower to deal with 'laughing and sometimes a dog.'

Line 3: Hmm...nothing besides powerful weapons. Alright, you may proceed.

The well-meaning, if not slightly clueless, mayor of Umbra.

Line 1: I'm sorry. It's simply too dangerous. If we unlock the gate, vicious monsters could pour out of the mansion and attack our town.

Line 2: Great job, you three. The mystery of the annoying noises has been solved.

(Line 3 context: “Tenebis” is pronounced “TEN-uh-bease”)

Line 3: Yes, because I knew Tenebis would make the correct choice. That, and I was knee deep in debt and needed to make some calls. No one was buying the crap I had to sell.

Riso is an officer of Rounding Down who dwells within the haunted mansion. She's pretty unhinged and has an obsession with riddles (usually rhyming ones) though her riddles vary in quality.

Line 1: These challenges will test you, your body and your mind.

But if you're short on either one, you will be left behind.

(Line 2 Context: She is trying to justify her overly simplistic door puzzle by listing possible alternatives)

Line 2: Okay, but some doors have handles. There are even doors with special locks that only open if you input the correct keycode.

Line 3: Hahaha! So you've passed my trials. Well done. Your souls will make a wonderful midnight snack. Hehehehehe!

Griffin is the founder and CEO of Geyser, a monster-hunting organization. He is also secretly an officer in Rounding Down. While he seems pleasant at first, he is malicious beneath the surface. He's also extremely frugal, and very rarely spends more money than necessary.

Line 1: Yeah, it's the anniversary of Geyser's founding. Hey, maybe you three can make it. I'd love to have the chosen make an appearance.

Line 2: (Malicious) Gotta say, I never watched those coliseum matches. But this was just disappointing. Okay, if we make some noise, the noble chosen one will have no choice but to return and rescue everybody.

Line 3: Either way, it's valuable. And I'm not cheap, I'm resourceful. Would a penny-pincher splurge on one of these babies?

Line 2: My name is Strix. I am the leader of the Moonlight Eaters.

Not really.

Line 2: Because of this restriction, my attacks have become even more precise. I can sense your very aura, so I never miss.

Asura is the leader of Rounding Down. He is a parody of the mysterious, long-haired final JRPG villain. Deep, quiet voice.

Line 1: My name is Asura...I am the leader of Rounding Down. When I learned of what became of my poor subordinate, I knew it was finally time for me to spawn out of thin air and end this once and for all.

(Line 2 context: one of Asura's subordinates accidentally undercuts a point he'd just made about their group's motives, so he's unconvincingly pretending not to know him)

Line 2: He's probably talking to someone else. I don't know that guy.

Line 3: No true conviction? How dare you...I trained for many years to use this form, and I wasn't able to master it until just a few months ago. This is true dedication!
