Project Overview

Grappling with the memories of her recently deceased roommate, Scarlett has to reconsider if she will stay or leave her conservative hometown.


Swamp Roots is a 2D animation student short film (~3:30 minutes). It's a young adult, slightly surreal drama. Almost the entire film will be in American Sign Language. The story is based around the push and pull of leaving your life behind, feeling stuck and attached to it, even though it's hurting you and prohibiting your freedom. A main focus of this project is to show how hard life is in the south as a teen/young adult, and how helpless it can feel as a minority in America.

Paid: Flat Rate 200 USD

Both Scarlett and Jieun are blunt, headstrong, and extremely co-dependent on one another, both grappling with addictions. Jieun is very smug, not showing her emotions until they bubble over. Scarlett is punky, confrontational, adventurous and burnt out. Scarlett is Deaf and Jieun has learned sign language since childhood in order to communicate with her. They are both leads.

I will need videos taken from specific angles of the lines being signed in American Sign Language. These videos will be rotoscoped (drawn over) and used in the final animation. This can be done by you if not in the NYC area, or we can meet in person for filming. Drawn storyboards are provided. Please apply with videos of you doing the lines in ASL.

MUST be fluent in ASL, preferably Deaf or CODA. Translation help may be needed, as I am only intermediate in ASL, and wish to represent this language with as much respect as possible.

Somber, cinematic sound track needed for ~3:40-3:50 mins of film. This film is slightly experimental, dealing mainly with a lot of flashing between the past and the present. The film is also entirely in American Sign Language, so the sound track must help elevate the emotion of the signing and work alongside it, as if it were spoken word. A sound brief, cue sheet, and animatic will be provided.
