Super Fighting Robot: Mega Man (fan animatic series)
Project Overview
Super Fighting Robot: Mega Man aims to be a fan-created series of animatics uploaded to youtube adapting the classic Mega Man games.
We are starting with the Ruby Spears cartoon as a base, and adding in various other characters and stories from throughout Mega Man's history. This means re-introducing classic characters like Dr. Cossack and Bass, as well as including pieces of the Mega Man Legends stories, most notably the Bonne family. The hope is that we can use Mega Man's wide cast of characters to its fullest potential, and use them to create new and interesting stories. Think of it like what "The Spectacular Spider-Man" did for that character. That's what I'd want to do for Mega Man.

Fair warning: As of right now this is not a paid gig. This is simply a fan project to do in our spare time. Depending on if we can find an audience I would absolutely be open to setting up a Patreon to split with the cast members, but as of right now I simply can't guarantee anything.

Deadline extended by four days!
We're very close to finalizing the casting, but we're not quite 100% of the way there yet! To all those who have already auditioned, please consider taking another look at any other character's you haven't tried out for, and see what you can do! -

Keep in mind that this version of Mega Man portrays him as a roughly fifteen year old boy (or rather a robot designed to act like one). He still has a relatively high pitched voice for his age, but he’s not a small child. His intonation should give off a friendly boy-scout sort of vibe, though he will occasionally make an awkward wisecrack. Sort of imagine a softer and more awkward version of his voice in the Ruby Spears cartoon.
Actually, probably the closest analog to what I’m looking for is Peter Parker’s voice in the fandub of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic by Prodigy. See this video for an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvzhVkMMZmU
Quipping:
“Woah, woah, woah! No guns on the playground, kids!”
”Welcome to the doctor’s office, can you please show me your arm?”
Relaxed:
”Hey, uh, my name’s Rock. I hope you’re doing well this evening.”
”Good morning, Dr. Light! Are you working on anything new today?”
Angry:
”If you don’t learn to change soon, this is all you’ll be remembered as. A sad, pathetic, old man in his basement throwing half-baked evil schemes against the wall until you die.”
”What the heck is your problem?!”
Roll’s character tends to lead towards the side of friendly reassurance, with the occasional bout of anger depending on the situation. She tends to flip between two modes of speaking- Very calm and upbeat in normal circumstances, and very stern and no-nonsense in more serious situations. She’s not normally one to crack wise when in danger.
For reference, this version of the character is largely based off of her Legends incarnation, albeit a fair bit more assertive.
Confident:
”You’ve got nothing to worry about, Doc! Nobody’s gonna get hurt on our watch!”
”No, I’ve seen engines like this before. I can get this fixed up within the hour!”
Angry:
”Hey, leadhead, don’t think I forgot what you did last time we met.”
”You have exactly ten seconds to haul your ugly butt out of our home before I fry your circuits.”
Peppy:
”Come on. Come here. I know you had a bad day, but we’re gonna turn it all around tomorrow. Now let me give you a hug.”
”Ah... I love the smell of motor oil in the morning. Okay I actually have no sense of smell, but still. It’s a good morning.”
Generally speaking, this depiction of Dr. Light is an almost exact mirror of his depiction in the Ruby Spears cartoon, so the easiest way to please me is to just try to emulate his voice in that. But to be a bit more broad… This is a Dr. Light that’s roughly 50 years old, and is broadly seen as a wise, old man. It should also be clear that some of that wisdom comes from poor judgement in the past. On that note, another character you could model the voice after is Uncle Iroh from Avatar.
But also don’t forget that, like Mega Man, he’s a bit of a dork. He may even have mild Aspergers. He has a tendency to go off on bizarre tangents and get lost in his thoughts, often spacing out or is simply just standing there processing.
UPDATE: Another voice I could see working is a variation on the "stereotypical wizard voice" trope. For instance, something like Deckard Cain from the Diablo series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JlbOYyl2QY
Confident:
”Don’t worry about that, admiral. I’m sure you’ll find my boy is more than capable of keeping the situation under control."
”I’ve worked in robotics for all of my adult life! A few circuits shouldn’t be too much of a challenge to puzzle out.”
Professional:
”Behind me is my latest set of robot masters, which in the coming weeks I will begin leasing out to trusted organizations.”
”I do appreciate you reaching out to me, however please remember that I’m more of a scientist than a businessman. I can give you the card to my friend and associate so you can work out the details with him.”
Serious:
”I don’t believe in mass-producing robots as weapons, as I feel war is already needless and barbaric. I make an exception for robots like Mega Man, because they stand to fight for protecting the innocent and retaining future peace. A factory soldier stands only for the faceless condonement of violence.”
Okay this one is pretty simple. The closer you can get to the Ruby Spears voice, the better. We’re going for the Dr. Wily with a stereotypical German accent and an insane evil laugh. He is a goofy saturday morning cartoon villain, and he’s unapologetically out for blood. Wily has an unchecked narcissistic ego, but folds like paper the moment he’s put in any danger. A scientist with all bark and no bite, if you will. Depending on the situation, he may come across as unmotivated and deadpan. Sometimes Wily just isn’t feeling the theatrics.
If you can’t do the German voice but still feel you can do a good performance for the character, then you can still submit your audition with whatever accent you feel is appropriate. Just know that if we can get a good German Wily voice, then that’s what we’re shooting for.
Joyful:
*Evil laughter* “Everything is going according to my master plan! Mega Man is distracted and out of the way, and within the hour I will have the funding I need to create a whole army of robot minions!”
”Excellent work, ProtoMan! If you keep this up, I might even consider paying you!” *Evil laughter again*
Angry:
”Mega Man!! You infernal trash heap, you’ve ruined everything!”
”I don’t believe this! Dr. Light would not have been able to make any of his accomplishments without my genius! And I step out the door for one moment, and it’s as if everyone forgot I was ever involved! Disgraceful!
Scared:
”No no no no no, please! Please, show mercy, Mega Man! I’m just a frail, helpless old man! I promise I can change my ways, I’ll turn over a new leaf, and you’ll never have to worry about me again!”
There’s a fair bit of leeway in how you could voice ProtoMan. Primarily he should just sound like a young adult, a little older than Mega Man. Furthermore, he needs to be able to cover the range of the smug jerkwad he was in the cartoon, while still being able to dial it back into something more serious. Meanwhile he always has this passive resentment towards most of the people around him.
Quipping:
”Well that’s just how I roll, Brother! I’m all killer, no filler!”
”Alright, alright, everyone here has thirty seconds to make like an atom and split! Anyone who stays can say goodbye to their kneecaps!”
Angry:
“Dude, you’ve really got yourself fooled on this, don’t you? I thought you were just playing it all up for validation, but no, you really see yourself as this ultimate moral messiah. ~The beacon of ethical robotics~. No, you’re not! That’s garbage! I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE LIKE!”
”Yeah… yeah. I can see why the Doc takes after you so much. You really are his special little golden boy, aren’t you?”
Serious:
”I realized that I crossed a line today. But for now, just get up. We don’t have time to drag out apologies.”
”No, I- agh- *sigh* Look, just… I’m not Mega Man, okay? Don’t try to compare me to him… I do that enough on my own.”
Tron’s character, at least on a surface level, is nearly identical to her official portrayal in Legends. She talks with a semi high-pitched voice and presents herself as an angry teenage brat. But she clearly has a softer side to her, although she doesn’t like showing it outside of her family very often.
Quipping:
(Mockingly) ”Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto!”
”Nuh-uh! Come any closer and you’ll be a robo-fishstick!”
Angry:
”You… you… You outta just mind your own business! Okay, buster?!”
”Okay, that’s it, no more playing around! You’ve gone too far this time!”
Comforting:
”Don’t worry, Teisel! We’ve still got a long way to go before we’re in any real trouble, and I have a new mech design that I’ve had on the back burner for a while now that’ll really kick Mega Man a new one!”
”We’re not out of the race yet, guys! We just need a new approach. This whole time we were going in hard and loud, but maybe we’d get further if we just stayed under the radar.”
Teisel is… interesting. He’s primarily a comic relief character, he has a lot of bouts of anger and stress, whilst still deeply caring for his work and his family. Generally speaking his voice gives off a vibe that he’s always whining about something whilst trying to avoid freaking himself out. He also has a comedic tendency to over-annunciate certain words, which gives his speech a sort of exaggerated emphasis to it.
Confident:
”Hate to break it to you, Mega Man, but no little blue boy is going to stop us from getting that treasure!”
”You’re not gonna get anywhere like that, Mr. Mega, it’s like watching a kid try to dent a tank with a BB gun!”
Angry:
”No, no, no, what are you doing? Close the hatch before you let him in!”
”Why you little metal pest! Do you have any idea how much work went into building that?!”
Concerned:
”Tron? Are you alright? We got hit pretty hard there.”
”Oh no! The crash! Servbots, all servbots report status immediately! Have any of you suffered serious damage?”
It’s hard to pinpoint a good voice for Dr. Cossack, because we have yet to see a voiced version of the character (to my knowledge). Tonally, I’m actually looking for something somewhat similar to Norman Osborne from Spider-Man. Not necessarily outwardly villainous at first, but always maintains this stoic formal attitude, even in personal situations. Obviously this is a russian character, but I’m leaving it up in the air how thick his accent should be, because in this his corporation (CossTek) is based in the United States. He can have a comically thick accent, but he just needs to sound Russian enough to be noticeable.
Fair warning: I've had someone submit a fairly impressive audition for this role outside of this website. Just letting you know this for the sake of fairness.
-”Gentlemen, I am afraid I will have to excuse myself. Urgent CossTek business.”
-”What is the meaning of this? What makes you think you have the right to break into my office in such a manner?”
”I apologize, Mega Man, but I simply cannot help you at the moment. But I do owe Dr. Light a favor, so have him call me if he knows how I could assist you.”
If you can do a voice that sounds close to the weird Peter Lorre impersonation that Cut Man has in the Ruby Spears cartoon, then heck, go for it. All you really need though is to make him sound stupid and high-pitched. He’s a pretty straight-forward guy.
-”I’M GOING TO MAKE PAPER DOLLS OUT OF YOU!”
-”Just think, this cutter was built to chop down trees! Imagine how easily it could chop down your legs!”
-”The name is CUT. MAN. Stop trying to pluralize the cut!”
Another pretty straight-forward one. He’s a big, dumb, construction worker guy.
-”The only thing Mega about this kid is the dent I’m gonna put in his armor!”
-”Come on bots, we gotta move us some roadkill!”
-”Well I’ll be nailed! He actually got himself outta that one!”
Out of all of the first six robot masters, Ice Man should sound the friendliest. His voice should match the look of the winter coat he’s wearing: Cute and fluffy.
-”Hi everyone! I made it out okay!”
-”We’re bad guys now, so we gotta do bad stuff!… I know, I’ll freeze all the taps in the bathroom so people can’t wash their hands!”
-”Alright team, our mission is go! Stay frosty everyone!… heh, cold puns.”
Bomb man is a weird dude… But he does have a duck bill. So I guess he sounds like a duck. But boy does he not act like a duck. Bomb man may have an annoying duck voice but his personality is just straight-up a G-rated Duke Nukem, and he acts like everything he says is the coolest thing ever.
-”Blow it all down! I never liked this joint anyway.”
-”Groovy.”
-”Looks like it’s time to blast some bots!”
Okay I have a weirdly specific example for what Fire Man sounds like. Basically, the ideal voice for the character is the Firebat from Starcraft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYfXNvqC024 So much so that some of these sample quotes will just be word-for-word the same. Basically he constantly has this really smooth & suave tone to his voice, but it’s also semi-emotionless in a way that makes him sound like a crazy person.
-”Looks like we’re gonna be having bolted barbeque tonight.”
-”I’m gonna flip you over and make sure yer done on the other side.”
-”I really hate that punk.”
For some reason I imagine Elec Man as having a sort of punk New Yorker type accent. Probably because he reminds me of Electro. Either way, he has a relatively youthful voice that sounds equal parts energetic and irritated.
Heads up: This is another role that I got a fairly impressive audition for outside of this website. Just letting you know for the sake of fairness.
-”Ey, buzz off, scum! I’m tryin’ to work here!”
-”Back off, Blue! I’m way over my voltage limit, I’ll probably short out this whole building if someone even sneezes the wrong way.”
-”Think you got me?! Think you go me?! I’m lighting in a bottle, buster!”
We will have roughly 3 different voices for the servbot. Each of the servbots should sound like little children, but their voices range from innocent to more mischievous.
When you submit an audition for the servbot, you do all three voices if you want, just please put them in separate files. But whether you do one voice or three, feel free to have a little fun with this one.
-”Evacuation procedures! Evacuation procedures!” *terrified shriek*
-”Boy, this coffee suuuure tastes good.”
-”I’m gonna look up bad words on the internet!”
I’d like to get at least 6 extras to play various random characters that don’t have any particular significance. At least 3 masculine and 3 feminine. Being an extra means you will likely have to cover wider range of character archetypes, but don’t worry about getting them all perfect.
PS: All these lines are ripped from Batman: Year One, and are just various quotes from characters who aren’t Batman. I didn’t feel like writing out a bunch of no-context lines for nondescript characters, and I needed to sample them from something, and this is just what I saw on my shelf.
(Sarcastic) ”Our very serious Mayor confronted the city legislature yesterday, taking no prisoners in his brave campaign to eliminate ATM fees. What a man. What a champ. What a town.”
”Rich people take drugs. Saw a special on it.”
”He’ll make up some story that involves at least ten attackers and never admit I did it.”
