Project Overview

Summerland is an original video game being developed by Conner Rush of FYRE Games. It is a first-person narrative about death, the afterlife, and the subjective nature of morality as told through the eyes of a detective in over his head with a supernatural twist.
The dialogue and voice acting in this project is intended to be very grounded and realistic, so none of it should sound overly dark or dramatic. If you need reference, think of the conversations between Henry and Delilah from the game Firewatch. The script does contain some profanity. Some improvisation is absolutely welcome, and payments can be negotiated (keep in mind, this is an out of pocket, primarily solo project)! Communication will be primarily done through email. The video game will be released on Steam and Itchio.

This is the main character of the story as well as the player character. Matthew is a detective in his mid 40's. He has the voice of a cop who's "getting too old for this" without the bitter attitude. A good reference for what we're looking for would be Joel from The Last of Us (maybe minus the southern draw): A low, rough, but subdued voice. Most of the dialogue will also be in the character's head. The actor in this role will need to have good emotional range, but most of the dialogue is very conversational. Estimated word count and estimated read time may not be accurate. Payment can be negotiated upon casting.
(When asked why he thinks criminals do the things they do) Hmm... I don't know if anything brings them to it. I think they may just be that way: hardwired to do wrong. I don't know... I don't have much remorse for them. They've done bad, and in my eyes, if you do something wrong, you deserve what's coming to you. You can't start sympathizing for them. That's when you start getting bad at your job.
(Panicked, desperate, and in tears. Almost as if he's getting out any words he can. Almost panic attack-like) P-please...! I ju-... just want to... P-please! Take me... I just.... Let me take-... my son, he...
There is a scene in the game where this character sings a song. Nothing theatrical, just an acoustic campfire type lullaby. We don't want an amazing singer, but just a voice that sounds low and comforting. For this section, sing something low and slow. A good reference song could be the Nirvana cover of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", but in that low, Joel-like voice. You can also choose your own song if you prefer.
Evelyn is a young woman in her mid 20's who's been going on ride-alongs with Matthew to different crime scenes. While optimistic, she's not blindly so. She looks up to Matthew and hopes to soon be able to join the force. Her and Matthew get along well. As referenced in the project description, Delilah from Firewatch would be a good example of the type of voice we're looking for. Estimated word count and estimated read time may not be accurate. Payment can be negotiated upon casting.
(Casual / curious) No, no, just... these people. Why do they resort to this? It just seems like some people don't see right and wrong. Maybe I'm just being naive, but I can't put myself in that head space... killing another person by choice...
(When asked how she got into the evidence locker. Casual) Oh, I'm sorry. I just told security I was working with you and they let me in. There wasn't a ton of fuss about it.
(Firm and Direct) Leave with your dignity in tact, and turn yourself in... You... You need to own up to-...
Charlie is the head of a small crime organization. He's brash, and he has a quick temper. We imagine him possibly having a bit of a light Bostonian accent, but we are welcoming different interpretations and we're very open to different options. We also picture him as being a bit younger than Matthew. All of his interactions with Matthew are done over phone call in the game. Estimated word count and estimated read time may not be accurate. Payment can be negotiated upon casting.
And who's fault is that? You're the asshole that decided to work for me! I appreciate the help, so as a courtesy payment, let's just cut ties clean. You've got too much dirt on yourself to report me, and I won't send anyone to kill you. We'll call it even-...
Oh, and you think you have authority to tell me when to call? I don't give a shit where you are. If I call you, you pick up up the goddamn phone.
Well tough shit. Think about it like this: After a few jobs, we cut our ties and you leave with enough cash to make all your problems just go away. Listen here, I know all about the government job pay cuts, and I know that without this money, you'll-...
