SubNatural (Improv Audiodrama)

Project Overview

SubNatural is an audio"drama" disguised as a podcast. Four friends decide to start a casual podcast in one of their apartments. Most of the time it's unassuming conversation about their lives, but every episode something strange happens to them. Whether it's an earthquake, a witch's curse, or a time loop, the show must go on because rent is really high and they gotta pay it somehow...

How does THAT work??

Subnatural is a mostly improvised audiodrama by @verfego and @thebrightagenshow where every episode a seemingly random scripted segment or planned bit dramatically alters the rest of the episode. It'd be tonally similar to Digital Circus in the sense that horror isn't a primary focus, but scary things happen semi-frequently. Episodes will be 20 to 30 minutes in length, So depending on how often we break character and start laughing, recording can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Most of the time spent recording will just recorded banter in a discord call as your character. Each episode will have an outline detailing how it will progress (so improvising is less stressful (and awkward)) including a script if necessary for specific segments.

Requirements + Environments:

This is a casual project, so the work environment will be extremely loose, and expectations aren't super high.

Required:
  • Mic that is not noticeably worse than ours (See pilot).

  • Heavy character improvising.

  • At the very LEAST, one hour of free time a month.

  • 18+.

  • Discord Account.

  • The ability to record your own audio track.

    Audition information:

Character voices are completely up to the auditioner's interpretation, and both roles are open to any gender. After the deadline, our favorite auditioners will be approached for a callback/interview. Mostly just double-checking your comfort level on the team. Remember to HAVE FUN! This project is more for us to enjoy ourselves than anything else. Improvising with strangers is technically a "bad idea" and a "great way to have zero chemistry," but we're doing it anyway because it's fun and you should too!

Ash is the horror enthusiast of the group, being excitable and knowledgeable about True Crime and horror. They always seem mostly unfazed by whatever Incident is occurring and often tries to leap into danger with little regard to their own mortality and lack of real experience with the supernatural. Ash was originally upset when the podcast shifted from being True Crime to a more general talk show but enjoy getting to spend time with their friends and occasionally talk about serial killers.

  • Making coffee is fun and all, but It's not really my passion. I don't think it's ANYONE's passion. No one wakes up and thinks "I wanna be the CEO of starbucks!" My real career goal is working at the morgue, but the first three times I applied they said I needed more experience. Morticians need to have strong wills, so I went into customer service to prove I have what it takes.

  • Wait... Are you a REAL vampire?? Like seriously? Fangs and blood drinking and all? I've always wanted to meet a vampire, but you're a little less gothic than I'd imagined. Whenever I think about vampires it's all about Count Dracula and Van Helsing, but you just seem like the normal modern-day introvert, down to the weird diet and everything!

  • *Improvise a short monologue explaining why owning plushies doesn't make you a "fake goth".*

Role assigned to: Aqua Bliss

Contrary to the rest of the gang, Ellis is a soft-hearted person whose kind nature often gets the better of them. Despite this, they've become the glue that keeps the group together, defusing arguments and heated disagreements that are usually instigated by Kory. Frequently putting others before them, Ellis is trying to prioritize themself more often and become less of a people-pleaser. Often when an Incident occurs, Ellis is far less levelheaded than the rest of the gang, being the only one with a seemingly "normal" fear response. Ellis has a terrible phobia of pointy objects, whether it be a demon's blade or a fork.

  • I'm not "scared of the internet." It's just a little unnerving to have everything I say be saved forever. Like, at any moment one of you could blurt out my social security number and OOPS- there goes my identity... And don't say that you'd never do that, I know you guys too well to believe that. Then what if Kory forgets to edit it out? If we're really gonna do this, I'm taking you through basic social media training.

  • So, I know things are looking bad, but can you guys PLEASE be nice to each other!? Are the last words you three all say to each other gonna be something rude?? There's a zombie apocalypse going on and you're arguing about whether or not zombies transmit zombification via parasites, magic or an airborne virus! Just RUN!!

  • *Improvise a short monologue on why forks actually a really dangerous and problematic institution.*
