Project Overview
Silicone Springs is the story of four people navigating a society that is becoming increasingly hostile to those who don't fit the social norm. Although they try to go about their business peacefully, the murder of a local activist and the emergence of unpredictable technology creates a butterfly effect that slowly reaches all of them.

Norm Olman is an office drone who works for a news outlet that is both the city’s newspaper and live TV coverage. Despite his seniority, he has maintained the same position for multiple years in the company, as he is suspected to harbor something sinister because of his chipper attitude. No one around him truly trusts him because of it. Regardless, he takes pride in his work because it’s one of the only things he truly has.

Elizabeth ‘Birdie’ Ingram works for an advertising agency that recently picked up the U.S. Army as a client. She’s the creative director of the ‘propaganda’ wing that has been tasked with promoting the country’s new laws against spreading foreign ideas in any form and keeping focus on American businesses. She knows that the basis of her job is unfair and unrewarding, but keeps it because it allows them to have food on the table. She desperately wants to make something of herself as an independent artist, but the art industry has diminished due to a rise in restrictions that mandate what kind of art is allowed to be shown in public.

Milo Whitlock is a private detective that left the SSPD after he was forced to incarcerate a fellow officer, who was also a close friend. Although doing so made him extremely popular with other officers, who disagreed with his friend’s more radical beliefs, he became very depressed and extremely addicted to ‘Fissile Cola,’ an experimental semi-radioactive drink that caused him to lose control of himself due to him drinking it alongside his medication, diazepam. He struggles finding work, but is trying to secure a name by himself to prevent harm from coming to others. He’s suspected of being a Communist.

About two years into our friendship, I accepted a case that concerned a property crime in the Industrial Sector. The case had nearly gone cold by the time I’d picked it up, and I barely had enough information to make an informed guess about who was behind it. In need of help, I turned to Christoph.
That kid who was loafing around Jeorgenson’s shop— he writes for Omegon Inc. They’re gonna start pushing out articles about his death like nobody’s business because it’s still a fresh case.
Hello Norm, this is Milo Whitlock, private investigator speaking. We, uh, met briefly, indirectly, at Jeorgenson’s Bookstore.

Sandra Norton is a secretary employed by Milo. Because business is not always guaranteed, she also works part-time at Silicone Springs Elementary as a music teacher. She majored in music education in college, but struggles to work enough hours because the school’s art programs are having their funds ‘repurposed’ for a new Youth Leaders of Today (YLT) program that acts as a mandatory government-regulated home economics class.

Why would anyone other than his own underground community care that an old man running a counter-culture safe haven passed away?
Christoph Jeorgenson is an older gentleman who runs a small group of people fighting for more freedom in the city. In the past, he was an SSPD officer who worked with Milo, who he was close with. He was incarcerated by Milo after withholding information about a case and supplying information, although unknowingly, to the perpetrator. He is found dead in his bookshop, a side project of his he ran for many years as a passion project and a second source of income.

I’d recommend you browse my collection of papers written by a colleague of mine if so. He’s a climatologist who’s done extensive research on the effect of carbon emissions on urban climate patterns. The papers are to your right on the ‘Scientific’ shelf; the last name is Reese.
Maybe I had simply hoped that change could, in fact, come from a peaceful, proactive place. That something like, like arson could not be done by someone who obviously cared very deeply about a cause; that I could redirect his anger to lead him to fight for the wellbeing of others.
