Sensational Spider-Man

Peter here has already graduated college, certainly on an older side with Christopher Daniel Barnes from the 1994 “Spider-Man: The Animated Series” and Neil Patrick Harris from NAS and Shattered dimensions being good examples. Peter is a man of multitudes: able to make a lighthearted quip just as quickly as he can give a speech about responsibility, complaining about how high priced groceries are while enjoying the thrill of swinging through the city. Just because this Spider-Man is going through a bit of a rough patch doesn’t mean that he isn’t going to bring an addictive energy that draws people in, hard as he tries to keep them out!

Mary Jane is a go-getter, wanting to prove to herself that she can forge an ordinary, healthy life with the person that she loves most…well, as healthy as your roommate being Spider-Man can be. Once having used her party girl persona to cope with her troubles at home, this is an MJ who, though she certainly knows how to have fun, finds that she is losing that mask as she grows to live without it. Mary Jane’s story here will require a voice that can create levity with fun and whimsy, but come back down to earth to steal the show when the time comes. Mary Jane’s depiction in the Insomniac games by Laura Bailey comes to mind for good inspiration, as well as Ashley Johnson’s portrayal of Gwen Tennyson in the latter Ben 10 series.

Much like Norman, Harry is always on the verge of his mood flipping, reminiscing on the good old days as quickly as he begins to have a nervous breakdown. Harry’s voice in Sensational Spider-Man represents both the calm and collected image he creates for himself and the lonely, attention-craving man still hiding behind the overwhelming shadow of his father. In addition, the role of Harry Osborn will include that of the Green Goblin, a maniacal murderous trickster who here is less mastermind planner and more madhouse supervillain. Steve Blum’s voice for the Goblin in Spectacular Spider-Man (and Marvel Tokon!) would be a good point of reference, while keeping it not too dissimilar from Harry’s own to ensure they’re connected.

This iteration of Kingsley’s Hobgoblin leans far more into the fashion mogul element expanded upon in recent years, a business CEO type who speaks with the smugness and grandiosity you would expect of someone that has it all. In addition, Roderick will secretly be the maniacal Hobgoblin, a voice which should have Kingsley letting loose from his public-facing career and putting on a show as he takes the Goblin identity for himself.

The narrator of Sensational Spider-Man, Aunt May should be voiced like not just an older woman, but a storyteller: like your grandmother reading you a story before bed. Nice, light-hearted, nurturing even, but enough spunk and character for when the script calls for it. This is an Aunt May that knows who Spider-Man is, and talks about his deeds with as much pride and verbosity as a parent would their child. In canon, she’s currently writing a book about her son’s exploits as Spider-Man, knowing most of the details but occasionally exaggerating for the purposes of the story.

 Jason Macendale is Kingsley’s personal toadie: his muscle and right-hand man willing to do the jobs he can’t. A mercenary-turned-salesman, Macendale should have a dark undertone to an otherwise lighter voice as he uses his charms and sales tactics to get customers to buy his boss’s latest merchandise. In addition, Jason will also have a stint as both the Jack O’ Lantern AND the Hobgoblin, so do your best impression of the latter and you’ll have it down pat, seeing as he is a knockoff.

The Beetle’s voice walks the line between a competent inventor and the small-time criminal who wants to be more than he really is. For this voice, picture if your stereotypical henchman type was able to swap topics from robbing banks to mechanical engineering with the same Boston-ish accent. Tombstone’s voice here is smooth, suave, yet still with a deep, dark undercurrent that’s rough around the edges to hint at just how much Lonnie Lincoln has done to get to where he is now. Lonnie is a professional now: he’ll talk like a business man whether he’s making an underhanded deal or smashing Spider-Man through a brick wall barehanded. 

Ever the theatric, Mysterio should sound like a cross between a wannabe Broadway star and an overdramatic supervillain, always up for a monologue if it means he gets to hear himself talk. In addition, however, Mysterio’s voice should be deeper as well to highlight his being a genuine threat, especially seeing as his voice will be filtered through his helmet.

An overwhelming presence, Kingpin has a deep voice filled with bravado to match his incredible size and respectable status as the biggest crime boss in New York. He speaks with the verbosity of a man who has read all of Shakespere’s greatest hits, but with a deadly certainty that makes clear how much damage he could do when he needs to get his hands dirty. Vincent D’Onifrio in the Daredevil TV show would certainly be a good point of reference.

Hydro-Man is your everyday street-thug, lacking in brains but making up for it with incredible strength and a threatening presence that should come through in his performance. James Arnold Taylor in Ultimate Spider-Man meets Bill Fagerbakke would be a good reference, with the hardheadness and emotional swings of Rob Paulsen’s performance in Spider-Man TAS.

Felicia Hardy voice is smooth and silky, as to be expected of a femme fatale thief and master thief. However, this Felicia is simultaneously vengeful and bitter over her breakup with Spider-Man, willing to do more and go farther than she ever has before: a lethality that should be present in the lines that require it.

Liz Allen is the wife of Harry Osborn, a hard-working woman who now runs a successful business alongside her husband, her positive attitude and cheerful demeanor underlined with worry, concern, and stress as her family life begins to fall apart. This should be showcased in her performance: putting on a show until she can't any more.

Matt Murdock is usually holding together a healthy balance between mild-mannered lawyer and the solemn yet devilish vigilante…though this Daredevil has delved way over the deep end after the death of Karen Page. His voice should reflect this: his whimsy, gone. His charm and charisma, gone. All that’s left is the Devil, his voice dark and brooding with a nihilistic tone.

Tony Stark is many things: billionaire, super hero, but this time around…he’s a man on a mission. Tony’s usual jokey, devil-may-care attitude is underlined by a seriousness that comes after a supervillain used his technology to murder a man, and as such his voice should be able to reflect that weight alongside his usual mannerisms.

The leader of the West Coast Avengers, Clint’s voice should keep his light-hearted, swashbuckling nature in mind while also keeping it somewhat serious to make clear there’s a reason he is leader. In other words, he’s as quick to crack a joke as he is to yell “AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!”

 The Bonnie to Hawkeye’s Clyde, Bobbi Morse is a secret agent whose time with Clint Barton as a crime-fighting couple led her to join the team. Like her husband, Bobbi is as willing to tease her opponents about their fighting style as she is to get serious and get the job done, her tough exterior hiding a heart of gold.

The kindly CEO of Horizon Labs, Max Modell has a kindly, almost fatherly energy: all of the support but without the edge to dole out the criticism and sternness he knows he ought to. An older sounding voice would be good for this role, with Fred Tatasciore’s performance in the 2017 show being a good place to start.

J. Jonah Jameson: mean, ruthless, straight-to-the-point and as loud as he is temperamental. However, this show will have Jameson in quieter, softer moments, and as such there should be an element of that in what he says and does. His performance by JK Simmons in the live-action movies and in Spectacular Spider-Man are the gold standard.

One of the highest-ranking editors at the Daily Bugle, Robbie Robertson is one of its most senior members, his voice requiring both a sense of age and a tone expected of someone who’s “seen-it-all.” His voice in Spider-Man The Animated Series would be a good point of reference, just a tad deeper.

Flash Thompson was once the big man: the life of the party. But after returning from his time in the military, Flash changes forever, hardened by the loss of his legs and the horrors of war. This voice for Flash puts on a brave face, says goofy things, but all of it underlined by a sense of sadness and insecurity.
