Restitched Soul - A Laughing Jack ReWritten Story

Restitched Soul - A Laughing Jack ReWritten Story

Project Overview

In 1830’s Victorian England, there are two brothers; a humble baker named Jack, and his eccentric brother Isaac, a toymaker with the craziest of dreams. One fateful day, Isaac gets his hands on a sacred tome with the power to make anyone immortal. With this, Isaac unlocks the keys to immense power, but first experiments with it, his own brother being an unwilling test subject. After placing Jack’s soul into a hand craft toy clown doll he made, he quickly realizes the grave mistake he has created, and reluctantly tries to reverse it while something even more mysterious and powerful threatens to take over his brother.

Your role: Straight forward; you will be reading all of the non-dialogue writing. The overall tone is horror based, so a more serious reading would be preferred throughout, but you will be allowed to add your own flair as long as it is appropriate for the story. Sound effects will be edited in the final version as well as ambience.

  • The ride felt like an eternity while the winter air pierced the man’s face. He couldn’t help but stare at the stolen book with obsessed eyes, his fingers twitched on the reins in anticipation. The ride could not have lasted more than fifteen minutes before he arrived at the quiet outskirts of London, the sight of which gave the man another sigh of relief; he finally felt truly safe.

Voice Description: A soft spoken but strong baker who's not afraid to sound stern when needed. Tries to keep his voice away from anger, but sometimes it slips when the situation's dire.

Role: Deuteragonist; Brother to Isaac Grossman who meets a horrible fate and undergoes a tumultuous transformation.

Voice Inspiration: Dr Jekyll from the Jekyll & Hyde Musical

  • -[a bit on edge/nervous due to a simple bad gut feeling but it turns back to casual as he speaks] "Well... Albert and the boys had thrown a party for my birthday. If I had known, I would have asked if it could have been hosted far, far earlier! However I suppose that is why it is called a surprise party.” Jack admitted with a weak chuckle

  • Jack looked at the beast with only a fleeting expression of fear as the fright faded; he recognised the monstrosity. "Why are you here to haunt me once more? Did you not frighten me in my younger years enough?" Jack asked with a tone of authority.

  • ”Isaac! You know you should not waltz in here before the opening hours!“ He began with a surprised tone which melted into a softened voice. “The last time you did this, I had several customers walk in and complain that they could not be served! Do you remember?"

Important: If you are auditioning to play Jack Grossman, you must also be able to play this form as well for consistency.

Voice Description: After being murdered and revived, he sounds a bit different but not by much. Loses a lot of his tone control but still tries to stay away from anger, though he fails far easier now. Voice effects are allowed to be used to make him sound as if he’s speaking out of a voice box, but do not overdo it.

Role: Deuteragonist; revived version of Jack Grossman who is now horrified at what he’s become.

Voice Inspiration: Same as Jack Grossman

  • “I... I remember. You murdered me last night!” He exclaimed. “But.. I’m alive! What have you done to me!?” Jack cycled through the tones of confusion, fear and ended with anger.

  • [currently trying to fight tears] “What am I to do, Isaac? How am I supposed to live the rest of my days knowing my own wife will think something terrible has happened to me?”

Voice Description: The creature that previously haunted Jack Alexander's nightmare, made manifest by Isaac's actions, or not. It sounds the same to the thing in Jack's nightmares, but it's unsaid if it's the nightmare creature, Alexander, or a part of Isaac.

It initially struggles to talk, as if it's never spoken before, but it gets the hang of it. Sounds old, like the embodiment of gravel and tar old. Sometimes sounds like Jack Alexander, but only fleetingly. It growls and snarls a lot as it speaks, as if it was trying to keep itself from going rabid.

Much like his previous form, voice effects are allowed to be used to make him sound as if he’s speaking out of a voice box.

Role: The “final form” of Jack Grossman; a corrupted monster

  • [Just after awakening] “Al… bert?” It struggled to speak as it adjusted to the ability to do so. “… I can never repay you for what you have for me-” Its head quickly recoiled back, as if hit with an unseen strike. “-what you have done for me tonight.” Its voice finally caught up with its new found freedom. “For that, I fear I am forever indebted to you...” It hissed debt like it was the devil itself.

  • “You push your luck, farmer.” It refused to look back as it scolded. “Be thankful he held you in high regard, or that wouldn’t have skimped past your head.” It spoke as if it could physically harm with its words.

  • Its smile somehow widened; It would have torn skin if it were human. “I’ve decided that, if I am to be here forever, then I am in need of someone to spend that eternity with. Someone who will not rot like everything else on this earth. Someone I can deny heaven like one once did to me.“ It hissed with a breath that became more animalistic with every second.

  • [After being flung off a startled horse very violently and recovering on the ground] “Agh... Shit, I ‘ope that thing didn’t break my- YAA-HA-AOGH!” Isaac screamed as he felt a terribly strong force crush his leg.

  • [in a physical fight after failing to quickly knock out his own brother] “You’re not supposed ta' fight back!” Isaac exclaimed in a frantic tone as he tried to push the knife through his brother’s hand, but he could feel he was slowly losing. “Please, just-” Isaac pulled the knife out of Jack’s hand in one quick motion and in the other, “Stop struggling!”

  • “Well, what’s gotten you in a chipper mood, today? Have you finally cleared your brain of its cobwebs?”

  • “Oh Isaac,” she began with distress in her voice. “Have you seen your brother this morning? He never came home last night after he came to visit you. He said he’d be back before I woke up.”

  • [As a human] “No, you do not get to call me ‘Elanor’, you foul and wretched thief! You will call me ONLY by the name your kind knows me as!” Despite her anger, her tone of voice was grounded and restrained, as if she was used to being whisper quiet

  • “So, your worries of him perishing far too early became true, and quite quickly I may add. I am quite sorry to hear that.” Her voice had turned melancholy in tone. “Once the natural body has perished, the soul can not return to it. It is just a husk, and so I am afraid your brother cannot have his wish.”

  • [As a werewolf] “Isaac.” A monstrous, strained and growling voice whispered against Isaac’s neck. The corner of Isaac’s eyes spotted large clawed hands gently taking hold of his shoulders. “Why have you arrived on such a night? You know not to, for your own well-being.”

He never appears for events you put on for the lads, he never helps you out on his days off. Hell, sod never even showed for your own wedding-”

  • [After finding Jack's corpse in his own pig pen] “What the fuck...?” He muttered with a weak voice. “I don’t understand... I was just talking to the bloke last night... how could he just have...“

  • “Your brother is dead and all you can still think about is your DEBT!? I should bash yer skull into the fence!!”
