Summary:
The Different Story is a spin-off manga based on Drama CD 3 of Madoka Magica. It takes place both before the series's beginning and an alternate timeline of the anime series. It follows Kyouko and Mami and dives into their past, what drove them apart in the first place, and how Sayaka's contract would affect them.

Mami is a kind, warm magical girl who's a strong believer in justice. When she wishes to survive a tragic traffic accident, she's left alone with no one to comfort her in her hardest times. She meets Kyouko, who becomes her apprentice, but grow distant when Kyouko starts opposing the idea of hunting familars. She meets Sayaka who soon become her student, and fight witches together. That soon changes when Kyouko comes back to Mitakahara.

Kyouko is a tomboyish, abrasive girl. Her wish was meant to better the lives of her and her family. She becomes Mami's apprentice to improve hunting witches. But when her family dies, she becomes more callous causing a rift between her and Mami. When she comes back to Mitakahara city, she finds Mami with her new apprentice, Sayaka.

Madoka's best friend and Mami's current pupil is courageous, tomboyish, and can often be impulsive. Her wish was to heal her friends arm and wants to be a strong defender like Mami. Kyouko and her but heads due to their views on how magical girls should be, not knowing that Kyouko was once in her shoes before. She appears in Episode 4.

Homura is a mysterious transfer student that teams up with Kyouko later on. She seems to know much about the other girls. She's strongly against Madoka becoming a magical girl, but doesn't share why. There's little known abut her past and her magic. She knows about the dark truths about being a magical girl. Truths that Kyouko and Mami know nothing about, and are better not knowing.

Madoka is a young girl that follows Mami and Sayaka on their witch hunts. She''s assumed to be a extremely powerful magical girl, should she make a contract with Kyubey. She's shy and soft spoken, and a little naive. She wants to do everything she can to help her friends.

Kyubey is a mysterious cat-like creature that makes contracts with the girls. In exchange for a wish, they become magical girls and fight witches. He's quite intelligent and considered an neutral observer. He has shown a get interest in Madoka, much to Homura's dismay.

Mr. Sakura is a priest of the Sakura cathedral. He was a honest and nice man, caring from his family. After having people believing his views of the world, his family's lives improved. However it wasn't because of his views that changed his family's lives for the better.
{smiling} "I'm glad you enjoyed it. Actually it wasn't too long ago that we'd have been embarassed to have a guest over for a meal."
{dazed} ".....Kyuoko?"
{sober} "Ah, indeed. That's just right. I have not the power to bring salvation to the world. I gave a witch a chance to take advantage of me. It's not your fault. All the blame rests with me."

Before his accident, he was a prodigy at violin. The doctors told him he'd so be able to walk, but his hand would still be damaged. However after one faithful day, his hands were miraculously healed. He's childhood friends with Sayaka.

"I thought you'd be here, Sayaka."
"Sayaka, can you tell me more?"
