Project X Zone 2 FANDUB: Prologue 3 - "Dancers in Shadow"

Project X Zone 2 FANDUB: Prologue 3 - "Dancers in Shadow"

Project Overview

This is a fandub project that I am undertaking as a fan of this series. Further details about my personal goals are discussed in the "About Me" section below. As a fandub, this production is not a paid production, or intended to be used as a professional product; instead, it aims towards personal development (and having fun!).

This fandub will be dubbing Project X Zone 2's Prologue 3: "Dancers in Shadow", a game which I have dubbed twice in the past. The video will be uploaded to my youtube channel, but I am not currently planning on producing a full dub of the game (although I will definitely be returning to PXZ2 in the future!)

Please also note that much of the dialogue in this scene is a lot of short, back and forth-type conversations, leaving out a lot of context, and I have therefore changed certain lines based on what I feel is a natural extension of the dialogue. Hopefully, this will give you more of a chance to display your acting talent.

What is Project X Zone?

If you have never heard of Project X Zone, it is a 3ds strategy RPG that's main selling point is being a massive inter-company crossover between Capcom, Sega, Bandai Namco and Nintendo as well! Featuring characters from fan-favourite franchises, including Street Fighter, Megaman X, Tales of, Yakuza, Fire Emblem, and more, there's no stopping the crossing of zones! There are tons of fun conversations, situations, and hijinks that occur in this game, so I want to bring some of them to life!

Project X Zone is unique in that it treats previous games in the series (Project X Zone 1 and Namco X Capcom) as events that are canon, and thus characters who partook in said games remember the events and characters within them, bringing them up as references in this game.

Rules and Guidelines:

1) Please be civil: It needn't be said, but as always, please treat everyone involved in this project with due respect and kindness. We're all here to develop our skills and to have fun, so please don't ruin the experience!

2) Please have decent audio quality: It is not necessary to have studio quality audio and mixing, simply ensure your audio is clear and audible, and ensure there is no real background noise in your takes.

3) When auditioning: Please only upload the ONE audio clip you intend to use for the audition, and include ALL voice lines from the audition within it. If you wish to change your audition, please take your audio clip down, and upload the new one.

4) I would encourage you to try 2-3 takes per audition line in your audition clip. Use these different takes to emphasise different emotions or try different emphasis based on the direction the line gives you.

5) Slating (introducing yourself and the character you're auditioning for) is not necessary. In addition, do NOT use a previously made voice reel as your audition.

6) There is no limit to the characters you can audition for. Feel free to try every one that suits you! Please also try to take the time to try to read the description of every character. As part of my attempt to inform you as actors about the scene, I may bring up people or situations for direction purposes that may not be fully understood if read out of order. If you feel confused, try and look at another character's bio to see if it's explained there!

7) There are NO formal requirements for previous credentials as a voice actor. I'm hoping to work well with any voice actor, regardless of your experience!

8) Have Fun! Above all else, I hope to make this experience as rewarding for my actors as it is for me!

Synopsis of Scene:

Shibuya has been closed off to the public, having been deemed a danger zone due to its tendency to be in the centre of space-time crossing events, where past, present, future, and alternate dimensions cross.

However, this also makes it the prime location for those who wish meet undisturbed; exactly why Hotsuma, Kage Maru, and Akira choose to meet here, to learn more about J6's combat android "Dural".

But Hotsuma soon discovers that the reasons as to why Shibuya is closed off is more than just rumors...

Communication:

If you are selected as to voice for a certain character, I will either DM you, or contact you via your preferred method of communication (please comment on your audition about details if you wish for this to happen).

I plan on using Discord server to conduct voice recording and direction sessions; these sessions will be happening live, and are expected to take at least 1-2 hours to conduct fully. Please be aware: I live in a UTC +8:00 timezone, so it is very likely that we will need to organise a time where conducting sessions are suitable.

If you have any queries or questions about this production, feel free to DM me or leave a comment on this post.

Strider Hiryu (Strider)
open
Unpaid

A member of the Striders, a band of mercenaries from the future so elite their capabilities seem superhuman. Despite his young age, Hiryu is one of the most skilled and talented among the group and is the youngest to achieve its top rank: "Special-A Class". Hiryu has partaken in some of the most dangerous and world-changing missions of the Striders, including another time-crossing event in the past.

Whilst on search for a target, Hiryu finds himself transported to modern day Shibuya, where he meets Hotsuma. As more travellers from different points in time gather, Hiryu quickly realises that he has found himself in the midst of yet another time crossing phenomenon.

Voice Tips: As one of the top ranked Striders, Hiryu's demeanor is exceptionally professional, almost ruthlessly so. He very rarely expresses any emotion and almost never speaks a word beyond what he needs to get his point across. Even finding himself in Hotsuma's time barely phases him. As such, he should be voiced with the sense that he's unflappable, and that he's "seen it all".

Voice Type: Medium-Low Male

  • [Context: Hiryu was just thrown through a portal into Hotsuma's time; he is completely unphased by this]

(nonchalantly) This scenery seems familiar... Ah yes, this must be Japan. In the Earth's past.

  • (Introducing himself to Hotsuma) ...Hiryu (He-Reeyoo). And who are you? Are you from this era?

    [Hotsuma questions what Hiryu means]

It's currently early in the 21st century, am I correct? To you, I come from the future. You can believe me or not; I don't much care.

  • [Context: Natsu has just introduced herself. Hiryu recognises her origins due to a past mission]

Fu-Ma Village, Musoh-Battoh-Ryu (Moo-soh Bat-toh Reeyoo). You've come from the past, haven't you? I met someone similar once, on a past mission. She came from before the year 1600 (sixteen hundred). However, the shinobi I met returned to her own world. I have no reason to believe she's here.

Hotsuma (Shinobi)
open
Unpaid

Leader of the Oboro clan, and current wielder of the Demon Blade "Akujiki".

Hotsuma currently works under the Shinobi Agency, giving him missions straight from the government. As head of the Oboro Ninja Clan, he was granted sole possession of Akujiki, a terrifying weapon that consumes the souls of its prey. Unfortunately, this has meant Hotsuma's path is paved with the lives he's had to sacrifice to satiate Akujiki's hunger lest his own soul get consumed, including that of his own brother. This burden has caused Hotsuma to close himself off, making him distant and soft-spoken.

At the request of Kage Maru, Hotsuma makes his way into the closed off city of Shibuya to exchange information concerning Judgement 6's Dural. However, the city is closed for a reason, and Hotsuma soon finds himself crossing paths with other ninja from different points in time.

Voice Tips: As explained, Hotsuma past makes him come off as reserved and quiet. In comparison to Hiryu laconic nature, Hotsuma should be voiced more brooding and poetic, as he occasionally lapses into soliloquies, and even expresses shock at certain points.

Voice Type: Medium Male

  • (monologuing to himself) The closed city of Shibuya... Hmm. Interesting choice. He too must be one who walks the path of shadows.

    ...

But still, something feels odd. All my investigations suggest this place is unstable, with mysterious connections to strange worlds. I shouldn't stay here long.

  • (to himself, questioning) Hibana... The name is completely unfamiliar--and yet this woman appears to know me?

(out loud) I wasn't aware I had been hiding. And if it's Akujiki (Ah-koo-gee-kee) you're after, I have no intention of parting with it. Akujiki is a dangerous blade. I can't entrust it to anyone besides myself.

  • [Context: Hotsuma's about to enter battle]

(Resolute, Fiercely) There's no longer any doubt. This portal really does connect to different worlds. In that case...what I have to do is clear. My mission starts now.

Hibana (Nightshade)

(Click here to see Hibana with her mask up, which is her default appearance)

A kunoichi from a future not so far from Hotsuma's. She seems to know something about Hotsuma's fate, but refuses to elaborate in fear of interfering with events in time.

Like Hotsuma, Hibana was born into the Oboro clan, but was sent to train under a separate branch from an early age. She was taught by a former Shinobi Agency operative, but said master eventually disappeared from her life. Being abandoned by both her family AND her master caused Hibana to become bitter and dispassionate, leading to her catchphrase "Today's just not my day".

While on a mission, Hibana finds herself pulled through a time portal into Shibuya, and reacts in disbelief upon seeing Hotsuma apparently alive and well. When she gets told by Hiryu that she's been pulled into the past, she initially doesn't believe him, but eventually comes to terms with it.

Voice Tips: As with the other ninja, Hibana should be voiced in a controlled and stoic manner, very rarely showcasing any emotions at all beyond her usual despondent nature (though she's not above peppering her dialogue with a snide comment or two). She should carry a particular level of carefulness and mystery around Hotsuma, due to her knowledge of future events.

  • (introducing herself) ...Hibana. Just another shinobi the Agency makes use of. About the sword... Yes, I've seen the Agency's files. Akujiki (Ah-koo-Gee-kee)... The cursed blade that devours men's souls, linchpin of the Ariake (Ah-ree-Ah-kay) Seal... It's held by the leader of the Oboro warrior clan, no?

  • [Context: Hiryu has suggested that you come from "another era"]

(aggressively) Another era? Care to wipe off that smug look off your face and explain?

    ...

(disbelieving, shocked) I'm... I'm in the past? I was just out on a mission, and now you say I've travelled through TIME?!

  • [Context: You have come to terms with the fact that, somehow, you have travelled into the past.]

(To Hotsuma, acceptingly) ...I believe you. After all, you're standing right here in front of me.

(dejected, bitter) And here it was supposed to be a simple mission... This is so not my day.

Natsu (Soulcalibur V)
open
Unpaid

A female ninja hailing from the distant past (circa 1600s).

Natsu is a part of the Fu-Ma Clan, a village of demon fighters. Despite this, she ironically also has the demon 'Arahabaki' sealed inside her body by her master, Taki. Though she was ostracised, Taki remained supportive and kind to Natsu, teaching her the art of Musoh-Battoh-Ryu, and allowing Natsu to grow into cheerful (albeit rambunctious) girl she is now. However, Taki disappeared one day, and feeling indebted, Natsu set out to search for her.

Natsu is the last ninja to be pulled through the time portal and meet Hotsuma and the others. She has a hard time understanding her situation due to the other ninjas' refusal to explain the concept of time travel, though her bratty personality complicates matters as well. Overall, Natsu feels disconnected from the events transpiring...until she learns that Hiryu somehow has met Taki before.

Voice Tips: Remove any preconceptions as to how you think ninja act, because Natsu is the complete opposite. Loud and expressive, Natsu instead comes off as a bratty, self-absorbed teenager with a tendency to 'motor-mouth' through her sentences, not helped by the fact that she (somehow) speaks in modern slang despite hailing from the Edo period. Draw upon your inner Sharpay Evans or Regina George; Natsu should be voiced similar to how those "queen bee" girls in high school-based movies are.

  • [Context: you were just blinded by a flash of light and were thrown through a giant hole in the wall to an unfamiliar place]

(shocked, flustered) Eyaahh! What the heck?! This is messed up! *groan* Well, THAT was wiggy. What on earth is that hole? Ground and walls here made of stone... Where am I? And who are you?

  • [Context: Hibana has just insulted you, saying you don't look like a ninja]

(catty, snapping) Hey, who asked you, sister?! Like you guys are any ones to talk! Wait, are you all supposed to be ninja? What are you doing here? Who do you serve?

    [no one responds]

(annoyed, bratty) Holy rice-cakes, why do ninja always gotta be such a drag?! Not that Master was any different, really. Ugh! I'm Natsu (Nah-tsu) of the Fu-Ma clan, trained in Musoh-Battoh-Ryu (Moo-soh Bah-toh Reeyoo) fighting style! Happy now?!

  • (realising just a second too late) Oh, crap, that's right! I was gonna talk to Hiryu (He-reeyoo) about something! I need to ask more about that shinobi from Fu-Ma Village he said he met. Right! I'm outta here too. See ya!

(Calling out) Hiryu! Wait for me!

Akira Yuki (Virtua Fighter)
open
Unpaid

A young man trained in the Chinese martial art "Bājíquán", and a recurring participant of the World Fighting Tournament.

Hot-blooded and focused, Akira relentlessly trains himself in pursuit of taking his skills to a higher level in order to "see the stars"; something his grandfather says is only revealed to those who understand the meaning of true strength. Despite this, Akira possesses a virtuous heart, and willingly uses his strength to help others, even his own rivals like Kage Maru.

Alongside Kage Maru, Akira makes his way to Shibuya to meet Hotsuma, due to his involvement with Kage's target, Dural. When he gets there, he amusingly mistakes Natsu for the ninja they were supposed to meet, but soon gets concerned when he hears events are playing out similar to a past battle he was involved in.

Voice Tips: Given that he's just a martial artist, Akira is free to express his emotions openly, running the gamut from complaining to sarcastic to serious. At the end of the day, Akira possesses a passion and zeal that should be captured in his voice.

Voice Type: Medium-Low Male

Language:

  • (slightly annoyed) Is this really where you set up the meeting, Kage Maru (Kah-geh Mah-roo)? Shibuya's sealed off. You can't exactly just waltz in here whenever you feel like it.

  • [Context: Hiryu and the others tell you about the time portal]

(understanding, empathic) I believe you, actually. I was caught up once in a similar battle. The past, the future, even alternate dimensions were involved.

Anyway, if we're talking government agencies, how about Shinra? They helped out with a battle of ours a while back.

  • [Hotsuma warns that Akira shouldn't involve himself]

(Resolutely, Determined) Dural is my business too. I've fought her before. Remember? And I have a past with the Zenobia too... That ship has already set sail, in more ways than one. There's no turning back for me now.

Kage Maru (Virtua Fighter)
open

A ninja from the Hagakure clan, trained in the fearsome "Hagakure-ryū Jū-Jutsu" style of martial arts. The name "Kage Maru" is actually one passed down through members of the Hagakure, with the current Kage Maru being the 10th to adopt it.

Kage's current mission concerns the conglomerate Judgement 6, whom were responsible for the loss of his parents and village. The pursuit of taking down the massive corporation resulted in him to entering the World Tournament, and his investigations have led him to target the prized weapon of J6; the cyborg "Dural".

In order to gain assistance in tracking down Dural, Kage Maru enlists the help of Hotsuma, who has connections to government information. Bringing Akira along, they are set to meet in the deserted streets of Shibuya, which is closed off to the public. However, Kage soon comes to see why Shibuya's closed off in the first place.

Voice Tips: Out of all the characters in this scene, Kage Maru likely has the deepest voice of all of them. Though he is normally stone-faced and unexpressive, he occasionally reveals a warm-hearted soul beneath the mask. A gravelly voice similar to Batman would suit this character.

Voice type: Low Male.

Language:
  • english
  • [Context: Akira is complaining about the difficulty of getting into Shibuya's closed off areas]

Akira. We're meeting with the leader of a combat unit with ties to the government... For someone like that, steps such as these are expected.

  • (To Akira, gravely) You've fought that metal thing in battle before. You're no simple bystander. V-Dural, to be precise. Not quite the same as the real Dural. But we'll save that talk for later. Our first priority is tracking our targets down.

  • [Context: Kage Maru finds Hotsuma, but is shocked/annoyed to find him accompanied by the other ninjas who have travelled through time]

(seriously, slightly irritated) I have business with Hotsuma (Hoht-soo-mah), leader of the Oboro clan. I am Kage Maru (Kah-geh Mah-roo) of the Hagakure. And I thought you said you were coming alone.

    [Hotsuma explains the situation]

(Disbelieving, slightly condescending) You're saying you all arrived in Shibuya from various times in the past and future? Am I expected to believe that?
