[Buffy The Vampire Slayer] 'Once More With Feeling'

[Buffy The Vampire Slayer] 'Once More With Feeling'

Project Overview

About the project:

This will be a full audioplay version of the critically acclaimed musical episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, "Once More With Feeling". The whole audioplay will go for around 30 minutes altogether, songs and dialogue. I'm looking for both Buffy fans and newcomers, so don't hesitate if you haven't watched much/any of the show.

Here is a short episode summary:

"Sunnydale is alive with the sound of music as a mysterious force causes everyone in town to burst into full musical numbers, revealing their innermost secrets as they do. But some townsfolk are dancing so much that they simply burst into flames, and it becomes clear that maybe living in a musical isn't so great after all. "

General rules:

1. Please make sure that your microphone quality is relatively clear, without background noise. Although this is an amateur project, I'd prefer to have the quality up to professional standard.

2. You may audition for the musical segment with or without an instrumental, just as long as I can hear your voice clearly. I will link instrumentals below.

3. This is a musical episode, but don't be discouraged if you're no Amber Benson at singing the parts. As long as you can hold a key and express your characters emotions well, you'll do great!

3. You don't have to have watched Buffy to audition! All I ask is that you stick to the original melody of the song and the general voice tidbits down below. Other than that feel free to experiment. This is a re-creation to a certain degree, but I'd love to hear your take on it! (It may be wise to watch this episode before auditioning though! Either way, it's a great watch)

Thank you, and please have fun with auditioning!

The singing for this role has been taken out because of insufficient backing tracks and time.

Character:

Buffy's little sister! Ever since her mom passed away, Dawn has been getting into trouble at school, partying and even stealing. She has a strong range of emotions, although expresses them like a bratty teen a majority of the time. She's sarcastic, strongminded, and constantly trying to prove that she's more than her age. Actress should be able to clearly show that she's younger than other characters in the show, with a higher voice or otherwise (Dawn is 15). She needs to be played by a stronger actress.

  • Oh my god you will never believe what happened at school today.

  • Come on, songs, dancing around...what's gonna be wrong with that?

I'll Never Tell - 0:28

Instrumental - 0:05

Character:

Anya is an unusual one. She, too, has second doubts about her marriage to Xander, but having only being recently human after being a vengeance demon for thousands of years, she wants to experience human life fast. She can sometimes talk with an unusual tone in her voice, or say the wrong thing at the wrong time without knowing. Her voice is mid-high and she has an American Accent.

Loves: Money

Hates: Bunnies

Singing:

Would prefer for her to be a moderate-strong singer. She sings solo in this duet with Xander and her own solo rock opera section about the evils of bunnies in 'I've Got a Theory'. Has to be able to express emotion whilst singing.

  • I don't know. One more verse of our little dittie I woulda been lookin' for the gas can...

  • Uh, Dawn may have had the wrong idea in summoning this creature but I've seen some of these underworld child-bride deals and they never end well... Maybe once.

  • [Singing segment - 'I'll Never Tell' ]

This is the man that I plan to entangle

    Isn't he fine?

My claim to fame was to maim and to mangle

    Vengeance was mine

But I’m out of the biz

The name I made I'll trade for his

    The only trouble is...

    I’ll never tell

Rest in Peace - 0:50

Instrumental - 0:53

Character:

Angsty vampire with a complicated (unrequited?) love for Buffy. He's neutered with a chip in his brain, meaning he can't hurt anyone, but that doesn't necessarily make him a good guy. Unlike the rest of the gang, he doesn't have a soul. Lately, however, Buffy is finding she can relate better to him than to any of her other friends after her return from the dead. Spike is sarcastic and witty, but can also be shown to be genuine in some instances. Spike has a medium voice and he has a British accent. Think kinda cockney-southish sort of thing. You don't have to be English to play Spike, but try to do an accent please.

Singing:

I would like a strong singer for this role. Spike's solo song is quite intense, and would portray emotion more effectively if the singing matches up. The accent should be maintained throughout the song like in the original.

  • Well, I've seen some damn funny things, last two days. Six hundred pound Chorago demon making like Yma Sumac, that one'll stay with you. I remain immune, happy to say... Drink?

  • (the) Day you suss out what you do want,  there'll probably be a parade. Seventy six bloody trombones... Look, you don't have to say anything.  We both know I can talk enough for both of us.

  • [Singing segment - "Rest in Peace"]

And since I’m only dead to you

    I’m saying stay away and

    Let me rest in peace

    Let me rest in peace

    Let me get some sleep

Let me take my love and bury it

    In a hole 6-foot deep

I can lay my body down

But I can't find my, sweet release

So let me rest in peace

I'll Never Tell - 0:56

Instrumental - 0:34

Character:

Xander is a generally goofy and lighthearted guy in general, but lately he's been feeling lightheaded as he moves into the scary next stage of his life - marriage. This is where the majority of his an Anya's tension comes from this episode. Most of his lines are delivered with his signature sense of humour. He has a mid-low voice and he has an American accent. Strong acting is needed for this role.

Singing:

He has a duet with Anya, but not much solo singing. He has a few deep notes here and there, but he doesn't require a very strong singer. The actor will have to be able to put a good amount emotion through singing voice however.

  • I shut the crew down for the day. My guys start dancing around, I don't think I could deal. It's a flab thing. So. Waffles?

  • [About Buffy]

She's easing back in. We brought her back from an untold hell dimension, remember? Ergo, weirdness. The important thing is that you're there for her.

  • [ Singing segment - "I'll Never Tell" ]

She is the one she's such wonderful fun

    Such passion and grace

Warm in the night when I’m right

    In her tight-- [catches himself]

    embrace,

    Tight embrace

Standing - 0:46

Instrumental - 0:46

Character:

Giles is Buffy's watcher, having been by her side from the very start. He returns to America from England once he hears of Buffy's miraculous rise from the dead, but has been having second thoughts about her well-being and his place in the mix. Giles is extremely British. He is witty in his own way, very intelligent, but has also been described as having a bit of a stick up his ass sometimes, but that's a little bit rarer these days. Giles has a formal British accent.

Singing:

Would prefer strong singer for this role. The song 'Standing' is quite emotional and would be complemented by a strong singing voice.

  • As ever, it's not quite that simple. But I have learned something quite disturbing...

  • Certainly emotions are running high, but as far as I could tell the victims burnt up from the inside. Spontaneously combusted. I just saw the one -- I managed to examine the body while the police were taking witness arias.

  • [Singing segment - 'Standing' ]

    I wish I could say
    The right words
To lead you through this land
Wish I could play the father
And take you by the hand
    Wish I could stay here
    But now I understand
    I’m standing in the way

I've Got a Theory - 0:05

[It's so short that an instrumental isn't really necessary]

Character:

Buffy's best friend, and a powerful witch. Generally very friendly and goofy at times. She brought Buffy back to life a few weeks prior and she's extremely proud of it (and a little bit cocky). Others like Giles, and her girlfriend Tara however are concerned that her use of magic is getting out of hand! Her speaking voice is mid-high and she has an American accent. She doesn't have too many lines in this episode.

Singing:

She has very minimal solo singing parts, but she will have to sing in a chorus. Doesn't particularly have to be a strong singer as long as she can hold a key.

  • [Casually]

Well, who wants to stay cooped up on
a day like this? The sun is shining,
there's songs going on, those guys
    are checking you out...

  • [Vague. Obviously bluffing]

WILLOW: The volumey... text. The... murnenfurm report.

  • [ Singing Segment - 'I've Got a Theory' ]

I've got a theory, some kid is dreamin'

And we're all stuck inside his wacky Broadway nightmare.

Going Through The Motions - 1:15

Instrumental - 2:20

Character:

The title character! Buffy can be very serious when she wants to be, but she covers her words in a thick layer of wit. She generally cares deeply for her friends and sister, but after being brough back from the dead, she's having trouble feeling anything at all. Her speaking voice is medium-high, and she has an American accent. This role is strong on acting rather than singing, requires a good immersive actress to play her.

Singing:

As stated, singing is not a top priority, but must still be able to hold a key and hit all required notes. Her voice is mostly alto - mezzo range. She sings solo quite a lot.

  • Well I'm not exactly quaking in my stylish yet affordable boots but there's definitely something unnatural going on. And that doesn't usually lead to hugs and puppies.

  • What do you want a little kid for? Deal's this: I can't kill you, you take me to hellsville in her place.

  • [ Singing  segment  -  'Going Through The Motions'  ]

    " I don't want to be
    Going through the motions,
    Losing all my drive.
    I can't even see,
    If this is really me,
And I just wanna be alive."

Under Your Spell - 0:08

Instrumental - 0:17

Character:

Witchy girlfriend of Willow. Generally softspoken and intelligent, she attributes Willow to helping her come out of her shell. Little does she know, the fears of yesterday were forgotten too soon as Willow had cast a spell to make her forget their argument about Willow's use of magic. Long story short, she finds this out. Angst ensues. Low to mid voice, American accent.

Singing:

Would really prefer a strong singer for this role. She has a few solos scattered throughout, with one full solo and a duet. Needs both a strong actor and singer to take on the emotion of this role. Has quite a large range.('Under Your Spell' is my favourite song in the episode. Good luck!)

  • We just have a few volumes at the house that deal with mystical chants, bacchanals... might be relevant.

  • I'm just not used to that. They were really looking at me.

[Willow: And you can't imagine what they see in you.]

I know exactly what they see in me... You.

  • [Singing segment - 'Under Your Spell]

I lived my life in shadow

Never the sun on my face

It didn't seem so sad, though

I figured that was my place

    Now I'm bathed in light

    Something just isn't right

    I'm under your spell

    How else could it be

    Anyone would notice me?

The big bad of this episode. Charismatic, chaos AND fun loving demon. Wants to take Buffy's 15 year old sister back to Hell and marry her.

Here's a scene for acting reference

  • Find her. Tell her... tell her everything. Just get her here. I want to see the Slayer burn. Now we're partying! That's what it's all about!

  • Come now, is that really what you feel? Isn't life a miraculous thing?

  • It's tempting. But I think we'll waive that clause just this once. Big smiles, everyone: you beat the bad guy!
