Project Overview

My father was born in Montréal on the 10th of July 1891. He came from a well-to-do family. My understanding is that my ancestors immigrated from Germany to Northern France to the village of Eguisheim (Haut-Rhin). It is a colorful village at the heart of the Alsatian wine route that produces Alsace, a high-quality white wine. Today, it is known as Village Prefers des Francis, or “Favorite French Village” in English. They then migrated to Northern Quebec (called Nouvelle-France or ‘New France’) during the initial colonization of Canada in the mid-1600s. They brought with them the language, traditions, and pride in being French. My father was named after my great-grandfather, Joseph J. Royal, who was born May 7th, 1837. Our great-great grandfather was born around 1842. There was also a Joseph J Royal. He was born in the village of Repentigny in Lower Quebec. Joseph J. Royal attended Saint Mary’s College in Montréal from elementary school to university, graduating with a law degree in 1857. He was called to the bar in 1864 and practiced law in Montréal until he relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he practiced law and joined the legislature. In 1888, he was named Lieutenant Governor for the Northwest Territories in northern Manitoba. Today, as one enters the great hall of the parliament buildings in Ottawa, there is a ramp leading up to the level of the Legislative Chambers. At the base of the ramp, there is an 1 embossed bronze plaque of Joseph J. Royal, highlighting some of his main accomplishments.
