My Friend Blue
Project Overview
My Friend Blue is a stop-motion animated preschool show set in a world of dinosaur characters. It follows Penny, a non-speaking autistic protoceratops girl, and her friend Blue, an autistic adult who helps her navigate the neurotypical world. The show is a warm, sensory-friendly celebration of neurodiversity and friendship.
Miss Winona is a retired elementary school teacher and a mother to two grown children. She lives by herself in the apartment next to Blue, one of the two main characters. Her vibe is vaguely witchy with an altar, moon tapestry, and incense decorating her home.
She is kind, warm, motherly, and welcoming. She is also familiar with and fond of the non-speaking autistic main character, a four year-old child. *The singing is very brief, and not meant to sound like a trained singer. Sounding endearing and relatable is preferred to sounding “good.”

(laughs) Having a bit of a sugar rush, are we?
Ah, and that’s why she doesn’t find them as egg-cellent as I do!
[Please sing at least a few bars of “Happy Birthday” or a little tune you prefer.]
Odie is a chill but opinionated dude and the best friend of Blue, one of the show’s main characters. He’s a gamer and a streamer, a bachelor, and always around to give advice or a hand.
Odie is a chilled-out, edgy-for-a-preschool-show, and ambitious 20-something stegosaurus. Voice can be a “cartoon” voice. *The singing is very brief, and not meant to sound like a trained singer. Sounding endearing and relatable is preferred to sounding “good.”

So like, when I’m like stuck on a level, dude? I just kinda... wander off, y’know? Get up, walk around, maybe go outside. Idunno.
(serious) I have JUST the thing.

Pepinha is FULL of life and love. She is a pterosaur (flying “dinosaur”), an athlete, an exchange student, and next-door neighbor/friend to Penny, the main character. She is an effervescent, optimistic, positive role model. Small amount of Portuguese in the script.
As a roughly college-aged student she should sound young, and her accent should be noticeable but not too thick for English-speaking preschoolers to understand. She is full of energy, sometimes to the point of being overwhelming for Penny, but is always warm, kind, and a fierce advocate for the people she loves.

Ayyy and you are with Penny today, hi Penny! I love your overalls, they are VERY cute. It’s so nice to see you!
(to herself) Mm, a feijoada? Não, está fría... Onde eu coloquei aquele--ah!

Penny is a non-speaking autistic child. While she doesn’t have lines, the character still vocalizes, shrieks when she’s scared, and stims throughout the episode. A young performer on the autism spectrum is STRONGLY preferred for this role.
She is reserved, but curious, and has a “free” quality about her resulting from an abundance of supportive and loving adults in her life and a complete absence of cruelty. Despite not speaking words, she should be able to show a range of emotions including excitement, fear, doubt, boredom, lost-in-thought “stimming”, and overflowing joy.

Context: you, four years old and autistic, are running around a room with your frog plushie absent-mindedly stimming.
Context: you are being presented with a food that overwhelms your senses. Struggle at first, culminating over ten seconds into a shriek.
Context: you are afraid to eat something, but when you bite it, it’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever had.
Ian is a rarely-amused lawyer and loving father. He is uninterested in conversation that doesn’t revolve around his favorite subjects, dislikes sharp or loud sounds, and almost never deviates from his preferred meals. While he has few lines in the episode currently being produced, if funds are raised to produce more he will be an important supporting character.
He is serious, flat but not monotone. Fatherly, but efficient.

Good afternoon, Blue! (to Penny) How’d it go today, my darling?
[Context: your daughter has stuffed a snack in your mouth, which is common, but it wasn’t the snack you expected.]Mmf, delightful! (swallows) Not Apple Cronchies?
