MLP Fanfic Audiobook: "The Needle" by Rambling Writer
Project Overview
Hello and thank you for taking an interest in this project. I'm looking for volunteers {as in, this is a not-profit fan thing} for an audiobook of Rambling Writer's "The Needle", a mystery/horror adventure featuring Daring Do leading an expedition into an unexplored valley. As an aside, despite the horror tag, the story does not contain any gore or otherwise NSFW content beyond one F-bomb and one... interesting piece of imagery - the horror is primarily atmospheric and psychological, and over time the cast's tone will need to reflect that.
I will also mention in advance that I will likely give preference to actors with a smaller portfolio of published works. It may sound a little counterintuitive, but I'm rather hoping to provide less known actors with an opportunity to shine - provided, of course, that they can do their role well.
Edit: You don't need to [read the stuff in the brackets] or things outside the quotation marks - it's just there to provide context.
What I request of you:
A microphone of passable quality - you don't need a five-thousand-dollar setup, but something with decent fidelity at least.
A general absence of background noise and chatter.
Ability to convey a decent range of emotion - while each character has their overarching personality and mannerisms, you'll need to be coy, afraid, panicky, excited and so on. Things will get weird as the story goes on.
Willingness to read a 45K-word story, or at least a fair chunk of it, in order to understand the context of each situation would be encouraged, although by no means mandatory. A PDF with color-coded highlights for each character is available here.
Discord, because apparently that's what all the cool kids use these days.
A bit of patience and understanding for a director/narrator who's mostly flown solo so far.
I also want to thank everyone in advance - whether or not your submission is accepted, I appreciate the time and effort to audition.

Two things to update with - I will likely extend the audition deadline, given that there haven't been auditions for most of the characters yet {though the ones that I did get are pretty great}. I credit my awesome promotional skills for that particular development, but if anyone is watching this, I'd be grateful if you could spread the word around. Second, the narrator lines are now recorded by yours truly - what remains in that regard is mostly the cleanup and processing, but for anyone interested in what the first chapter narration sounds like, you can find the link below. Tell me what you think, good or bad! https://tinyurl.com/y6ujodt4
The token innkeep/bartender for the obligatory "you all meet in a tavern" intro. These two lines are all she has.
After a quick glance at the pile of coins, the bartender looked around the room a bit, then pointed at a corner. “See the deer back there?” she said. “With the notch in her antlers?”
“Rangifera. Bit of a mercenary, but don’t call her that. Good fighter, loyal, good rates, and she knows people who know people. If you can’t get everyone you need through her, you won’t find them here. And…” She swapped the bits with a steaming mug of cider.
Main character. Starting off enthusiastic and excited for the expedition, but gradually becoming more tense and worried as she becomes ever more aware she is far out of her element.
Approx. 3600 words total.
["Do you even know what you’re looking for? Or-"]
“Nope!” Daring said cheerfully. ([“Oh, stars above,”] mumbled Rangifera.) “That’s the great part! It’s a journey into the unknown, where anything can happen!”
[After experiencing something disturbing after following a stream for a while]
“Stalwart,” said Daring, “just stay away from the water, okay? I’ve had experiences with cursed springs, and believe me, it’s not pleasant on the best of days. It’s not like we’re low on supplies or anything.”
[with a companion acting strangely]
“Just humor me,” Daring said, her voice low, “and raise your right hoof, okay?”
Experienced mercenary. Pragmatic, confident, just on the right side of cocky, and taking things in stride better than most of the group. A slightly deeper voice might be preferred, but not necessary.
Approx. 1500 words total.
“Ah! Perfect!” Rangifera said. “We were just wondering when you would show up. Fallende, Stalwart, my courageous colleagues, this is Daring Do, our excellent employer.”
[calling out to other members in a blizzard. Try not to whisper-shout.]
“On it.” Rangifera’s antlers glowed. “HEY!” she bellowed, far beyond her usual voice. “FALLENDE! STALWART! ARE YOU OUT THERE? IT’S RANGIFERA! DARING, WINDROSE, AND I EACH FOUGHT OFF OUR WOLVES!”
[discussing whether to stay or leave]
Rangifera lightly bopped Stalwart on the head and shrugged. “Half interested, half too lazy to turn around. Staying, my practical pegasus.”
Retired military, the most excited to be on the expedition. Very sociable and talkative, unperturbed for most of the time, but dismissive or confrontational towards other characters in some of the situations.

[tone: ohboyohboyohboyohboy!!]
“Daring Do, right? I’ve heard of you. Secondhoof, obviously, but the stories!” (...) “Warrant Officer Stalwart Shield, EUP, Retired. Combat and navigational mage for my unit."
[after counting their food supplies and coming up with unexpected numbers]
“And sixteen for me,” said Stalwart. “Huh. That’s strange. I wonder why we all have different amounts? And, ah… huh, we all have enough for everyone to have seventeen days’ worth. Strange indeed.”
[tone: incredulous/dismissive]
“You’re talking about warping space itself!” laughed Stalwart. “So seamlessly that no one’s aware of it! That’s not-”
Mountaineer. Very blunt, gets along least well with the others due to her, shall we say unfiltered attitude. Not actively hostile most of the time, but does not shy away from showing how she feels about any given situation, all of the time.
Approx. 2500 words total.
The reindeer was expressionless as she nodded. “Mountaineer, and I’ll carry your crap through the Needle if that’s what you pay me for.”
“I know we’re not there yet, I know we won’t be there for a while,” Fallende said, rolling her eyes. “I just want to know how we’ll know when we are there. Or do you expect we’ll find signposts going, ‘end of valley here, turn around’?”
“…You know what? No.” A magical haze surrounded Daring’s head and she was wrenched to one side, muzzle-to-muzzle with a snarling Fallende. She prodded Daring hard on the chest. “If you don’t snap out of it now, my dimwitted dope,” Fallende said, her teeth bared like fangs, “I am going to take all your crap, and I am going back to Light’s Edge, and you can freeze to death out here, grazing on your own pubic hair for all I care.”
The most inexperienced of the group, joined out of financial desperation. Quickest to twig to the strangeness, she's the most eager to turn around and go back. Somewhat torn between not wanting to go against the others and self-preservation, she's able to be confident and assertive when it comes to her skills as a cartographer.

[breathless of the "oh god did I make it in time" type]
“Listen, I’m sorry, I- I know you probably… have enough people for your… expedition into the Needle already, but I heard you were paying in advance, and I, my family really needs some money if we’re going to survive the winter. So… Will degrade self for cash, I guess.”
“About ten and a half miles,” Windrose said promptly. “Total since entering the valley, I mean, not just today.” She raised an eyebrow at the surprised glances and said, “I’ve got a good sense of distance and direction. Like most cartographers. It’s really nothing special.”
[absolutely freaking terrified with a dash of furiousness]
“How many times did I say that we needed to turn around?” Windrose asked. “Six? Seven? Maybe ten times that and we just can’t remember. I told you something was up! And you said that was the point! And now you’re-”
