Love's Roots
Project Overview
Bloody Mary is now queen of England and is violently killing Protestants. The English are converting to Catholicism left and right, and now the lord of a local land is forcing his Protestant servants to convert - or die. After two of his servants run off and get married under a priest (which protects them from death by law), the lord must find a horrendous way to get back at them.

Lambert Brackney is the son of an impoverished lord. In order to pay his debts to Lord Rauching, Lambert was given for X number of years to serve. As such, Lambert honors the agreement so as not to bring more shame to his father, but dislikes the hard work and would rather find others to do it for him. He has had an education and is clever.
By the Lord’s Grace in heaven! That woman is an angel sent to this earth to secure my heart! Her name I shall proclaim from the very tip of my tongue - if only I knew it.
Lambert. And yes, I try to be. Tell me, Ms. Bray. Do you believe in God?
I can promise you a life of riches. You’ll be called Lady Bray. People and servants will bow to you in every room you enter. You’ll be safe. All you have to do is say yes.
Avis Bray is a lowly indentured servant (lower than peasants). She works for Lord Rauching. She has high dreams of becoming a noble, but understands than there isn’t much chance for her. She falls in love with most every man she meets and longs for someone to come and save her from this backbraking work. Unfortunately, this is the only life she has ever known. She is physically strong, yet dumb due to lack of education.
I’m sorry, my lord. I did not mean to speak to you so openly. A lowly wench shouldn’t release her instincts in the sights of a lord.
I reckon I don’t know what I believe in. I haven’t ever really had much time to do much of anything, ‘cept work, so I ‘specially didn’t have time for Church on Sunday.
But if we’re seen together, then we’ll be killed.
The Celtic Servant is a Protestant Christian who was a part of the Anglo-Scottish wars. As such, he was taken into servitude by Lord Rauching (who helped stomp the uprising). He is loudmouthed, angry, yet a hard worker. He is physically strong.
She ain’t good at ‘er job. She’s barely raking any of that hay up. Come on lady, put yer back into it. Aye bet she couldn’t even milk a cow’s udder with those weak muscles. Poor beast’ll be dead. ‘S why ye need a man to do these types o’ jobs.
Ye English darstards and yer “faith”. I was in the Anglo-Scottish wars and all ye evar did was just proclaim that the lord saved ye. That he watched over yeh like a Shepard with his sheep. Well, he certainly didn’t.
Yer tying me up to a pole? Whatcha gonna do? Leave me for the crows? At least that’s less frightening than eating English bread.
A strong, Catholic noble who is well-liked by Queen Mary. He is educated, and swept up with the crowd. He does not care for his servants, and would rather just get money.
Guards, show this faithless Celt what happens when he denies Catholicism.
Our Father who art heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Tree? Well, I’ve gone to your local priest, Lord Brackney. I am forbidden to kill newlyweds by law. And as such, I shan’t kill you. No. But seeing as you are entwined in your lovers arms...
Priest: A local Catholic Priest who helps people in need. He tends to have a soft spot for the innocent, or the down-trodden.
Guard: The Guard is a soldier for Rauching’s estate. They are Catholic.
Guard: Yes, M’lord!
Priest: Is it not because of your devotion to your faith that worries you? The climate of England is quite unsettling, and a marriage between a young man and woman can’t be broken - at least according to law. Their lives cannot be forfeited.
Priest: Blessed is his name, the Lord Jesus. John 3:16. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
