Layer by Layer
Project Overview
A new YouTube tutorial series from Krotos Audio
Most video editors know their edit sounds unfinished, but sound design can feel like a separate skill they never had time to learn. This series closes that gap.
Each episode starts on a silent clip and builds its sound from scratch, one layer at a time, until the scene sounds finished. Viewers watch every decision as it happens: which sounds to start with, how to layer them, and how to make them sit in the scene. By the end of each episode, they’ve seen the full process and can repeat it in their own projects.
Every episode focuses on one type of sound effect that editors reach for all the time, from horror atmospheres and transition whooshes to risers, impacts and explosions. All sounds are built in Krotos Studio, our sound design software, and dragged straight onto an editor’s timeline, so the workflow matches how editors already work.
Episodes run 10 to 20 minutes and are made for beginners: clear, practical and easy to follow. Each episode is also cut into short clips for YouTube Shorts and Instagram.
The series is presented by a working sound designer, who brings real craft to the screen and explains it in a way anyone can follow.
We’re looking for a sound designer to present a new tutorial series on the Krotos Audio YouTube channel. Each episode teaches sound design to people who are new to it, so you’ll need to be comfortable on camera and able to explain your process clearly, step by step.
Episodes run 10 to 20 minutes (ideally 10), with a recording session of no more than 2 hours per episode. The role is paid per episode and contracted one episode at a time. All sounds come from the Krotos Studio library, and the presenter gets Krotos Studio Pro to keep. Krotos owns the finished episodes.
You should be a working, English-speaking sound designer. Video editing skills are a bonus.
To audition, submit through Casting Call Club:
A recording of you delivering the audition lines on camera
A short video (1 to 2 minutes) showing your presenting style. Explaining a sound design idea to a beginner works well.
Links to your work and your rate for presenting one episode (and for presenting and editing, if you edit video)
Auditioning is unpaid. The role itself is paid. Some sample lines are linked below if you need guidance on what we're looking for in the auditions.

Hi, I’m [your name]. Say you’ve cut a transition and it needs a whoosh that hits at exactly the right moment. In Krotos Studio, you pick a preset and perform the sound in real time. Move across the pad and the sound changes as you go: faster, heavier, closer, further away. When it sounds right, drag it straight onto your timeline and you’re done. That’s the whole idea behind Krotos Studio: sound that fits your edit, made in the moment.
