Last Call - GTA V Machinima/Short Film

Last Call - GTA V Machinima/Short Film

Project Overview

A short GTA V film.

A debt collection job gets done, money is paid, and it's movie night. The normal routine. Ray just wants to get his beer and get back home to his wife. But in his line of work, things usually never go as you hope. Usually what goes around comes around.

The estimated runtime is about 15-20 minutes.

GENRE: Crime drama, Crime thriller, Neo-noir.

Last Call is grounded, minimalist, and intimate — almost like a slice-of-life drama about a violent man trying to compartmentalize being a criminal, friend and husband.

Heavily Inspired by the show "Mr. Inbetween".

Main character of the film. Bouncer at a club and does side jobs for his boss for extra cash. Hits, collecting debts, bit of this, bit of that.

Ray just wants to get home and watch a movie with his wife.

Character Bio

Ray is a part time bouncer, part time hitman. Always has his guard up but around friends and family his warmer, friendlier side comes out. Age: Mid 30's

THEME- Ideally, Ray would be similar in tone to the main inspiration of the character, Ray Shoesmith from the show "Mr Inbetween", as it serves as the main Inspiration for the character and film.

Calm and focused when out on his own, he's been in this line of work for a very long time.
Grounded, sharp,  gritty and nuanced.

  • [You have your back to the wall, gun in hand. You thought you got the drop on someone but they saw you coming. Hitman VS hitman, you knew this day would come.] He still upset about how things went down? It was a long time ago, man. He should have been more clear on who he wanted hit, not hide the details from me.

  • [You're on the phone with your wife, you just got off "work" and you've been looking forward to movie night with her]I'm clocking out right now, actually. Just gonna stop and get us some beer and head home. Anything to eat?

  • [You're standing over a wounded hitman who's been tailing you for who knows how long, you're demanding answers]How many of there are you? (pause, demanding tone) How many?!

The Hitman has a score to settle with Ray.
Age: Late 40's

At one point, his boss, Clark, contacted Ray for an assassination job. Alot of time and money was invested into the hit to make sure everything went exactly as planned. However, Ray had a change of heart. The target was a pregnant woman, who with the help of her family, was hidden away for her safety. With a sniper aimed right at her, instead of pulling the trigger on her, Ray killed the men in the room and escaped.
Shortly after, Clark sent a hit squad after Ray as retaliation but they failed. Now after some years had passed, it's time for round 2.

THEME - Direct, gritty, nuanced, has history with Ray. He still respects him and he's disappointed that he's the one who's gonna have to put him down.

  • [The Hitman and Ray are both hiding in cover, backs to the wall. Both tensely waiting for the perfect moment to get a shot on each other] Do you know how long it took us to draw that bitch out into the public? All the time we spent on tailing her. Money down the drain. [beat] I lost alot of good men, friends, because of you. Since when the hell did it matter to you who you hit and why?

  • [The Hitman is ready to take the shot on Ray. He might be confident but he sounds almost regretful having to kill him, Ray was someone he used to respect] [disappointed] Fuckin' hypocrite. [beat, sigh] I'll make it quick, don't worry. Better I spare you of what Clark would do to you if I brought you in alive. Sorry, Ray.

  • So...the poor bastard you snatched tonight, he deserve whatever's gonna happen to him?

  • [You just got done getting everything ready for movie night, all that's left to do is wait for Ray to come home]Hey baby. You just got out of work?

  • [Ray just told you he's gonna get beer for movie night, you know he works at a club and it's not that far from your apartment, you can't wait to see him] Just peanut noodles and chicken, the one you like . Lemme know when you're almost home so I can start cooking, I got the chicken marinating.

  • [It's been an hour and a half since you last spoke to ray, it never takes him this long to get home and you're very worried]Hello? Ray, are you okay? I thought you'd be home by now.  [small pause, very worried tone] Ray? Are you there?

Age: Late 20's early 30's

Danny is a tired, working-class husband and father who has dug himself into a hole he can’t climb out of. He owes a dangerous amount of money to a loan shark, and after weeks of lying to his wife and pretending he still has control, the consequences finally catch up with him.

He is not a gangster, not a tough guy, and not someone built for the world he has stepped into. He’s a fundamentally decent but deeply flawed man whose fear, shame, and desperation have pushed him into making choices he can’t undo. Beneath the panic, there is real love for his wife and daughter, which makes his situation even more tragic.

THEME - The performance should feel restrained and naturalistic. Danny is trying to hold himself together over the phone, but the cracks keep showing. He should come across as exhausted, cornered, ashamed, and quietly terrified — a man who knows he may never make it home, but is still trying not to scare the people he loves.

  • I'm scared, Deb. I didn't mean for it to get this bad. [beat, gulps] But I'm working on making it right.

  • Tell Sadie that daddy loves her. More than anything in the world.

  • I fucked up. [beat] I thought I had more time than I did.

Age: Late 20's.

Danny’s wife and the mother of their young daughter, Sadie. Deb is tired, worried, and beginning to realize her husband has been lying to her for longer than she wanted to believe. When Danny calls late at night from an unknown motel, she starts the conversation frustrated and confused, but slowly becomes terrified as she hears the fear in his voice.

Deb is not helpless or passive. She is loving, grounded, and emotionally sharp — the kind of person who can tell when something is wrong even before the truth is spoken. She wants answers, but more
than that, she wants her husband to come home alive.

THEME- The performance should feel naturalistic and emotionally restrained. Deb is scared, angry, hurt, and still deeply in love with Danny. She should not feel melodramatic; the power of the role comes from the way she tries to stay calm while realizing this may be the last time she ever speaks to him.

  • [She should sound like he's just barely waking up] Danny where are you? It's almost 2 in the morning.

  • [Still waking up but a bit more attentive, she's worried that Danny lied about where he'd been]Your office called me. Twice. First Mark, then the lady from payroll. They asked if I'd heard from you because you haven't been there all week. [beat] You told me you were on a business trip. What's going on with you?

  • [This is after he tells her "He's handling it", she should sound tired and disappointed, she just wants her husband back]No, you're not. You're alone somewhere calling me at two in the morning asking for our daughter.
