Jane Eyre Audio Theatre

Project Overview

A gothic masterpiece of tempestuous passions and dark secrets, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre is a classic novel which we will be bringing to life. It tells the story of orphaned Jane Eyre, who grows up in the home of her heartless aunt, enduring loneliness and cruelty. This troubled childhood strengthens Jane's natural passion, independence and spirit - which prove necessary when she finds employment as a governess to the young ward of Byronic, brooding Mr Rochester. As her feelings for Rochester develop, Jane gradually uncovers Thornfield Hall's terrible secret, forcing her to make a choice. Should she stay with Rochester and live with the consequences, or follow her convictions - even if it means leaving the man she loves? A story of intense power and intrigue, Jane Eyre has dazzled readers with its passionate depiction of a woman's search for equality and freedom. - Desc adapted from Goodreads

This project is a huge passion of mine. This is my favorite book and it is important to me to create a beautiful homage to it. This will require a large cast of voice actors to embody their unique roles. The list of characters is too long to be exhaustive; I will go into most of them here but there will be more - which means that some of you may be asked to read for or to take on roles that are not on this list as they come up.

Because this audio drama will be covering a detailed and long classic, it will take a little while to produce - however the length of this process is solely intended to keep the work load for voice actors very low, giving only a few lines at a time.

All characters unless otherwise specified will speak with a British accent. Please read the full description of the character you audition for; some lines may require important context which will be included in the description.

I may ask some voice actors to do chemistry reads or callbacks; please keep an eye on your DMs or Discord friend requests.

Auditioners must leave their Discord handle or email address with their audition! The project will be organized in a Discord server, but I will make accommodations for people who do not have Discord by looping them in via email.

After reflection, I have assigned myself the role of Mary Rivers. All other roles remain open!

Thank you to everyone who auditioned for this project! This was a very challenging piece to cast; everyone did incredibly. I am not joking when I tell you I have been through several epiphanies and several iterations of this list; it’s been a real challenge.

For those who were not cast, there will be future opportunities coming soon. If you accept your role, please indicate it by leaving your Discord (if you have not already) AND accepting my Discord friend request so that I can add you to our server! If these two steps have not been completed within one week of this post, I will assume you are declining your role and will move to the next person in line.

A quick note on my casting. I had originally opted to take the role of Mary Rivers, but throughout casting found that I was struggling to find an Eliza I liked but was finding no shortage of good Mary candidates (from other auditions since the role was closed). I decided today to take Eliza myself and give Mary to one of those candidates.

Jane is shy, quiet, and respectful, but she is not meek. She is strong and knows who she is and what she is worth. She carries herself with dignity and strength, making her Rochester's equal in intelligence and conversation. She values her integrity and freedom deeply, and her sense of self and value come not only from her self worth but from her deep faith in God. Jane is strong-willed and passionate by nature, yet quiet and respectful, forgiving and gentle, witty and intelligent, and deeply principled. Her voice must be able to reflect her quiet, kind, respectful behavior, her humor when she interacts with Rochester, and also her deep emotional experiences. Strongest examples for portrayals are Ruth Wilson (2006) and Samantha Morton (1997). I picture Jane with a bit of a younger-sounding, softer voice as she is 18, but that voice must carry her dignity and strength as well as her shyness and innocence.

LINE CONTEXTS:

Line 1: Though Jane is practiced with keeping her composure, she is by nature passionate and emotive. She is deeply in love with Rochester and believes he will be marrying someone else. Though she has kept it held within for a long time, at this point she snaps and, heartbroken, speaks her mind to him, through hurt and anger.

Line 2: Jane is teasing (read: Victorian flirting) at this time. They have a running joke about his appearance (one of their first conversations she automatically replies to his question about if he is handsome with a no). He asks her here if he is hideous and she replies with a tease.

Line 3: Jane is a respectful, kind and gentle employee. While she is friends with her employer at this point, several lines like this one illustrate her dedication both to her moral principles and her respect.

  • (emotional, impassioned, not quite crying but nearly there) Do you think I am a machine without feelings? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal — as we are!

  • (dryly teasing) Very, sir. You always were, you know.

  • (kind) I like to serve you, sir, and to obey you in all that is right.

Role assigned to: Lobstrosity

Rochester is depicted as aloof, intelligent, proud and sardonic. A Romantic figure, he is passionate and hot-tempered, but tormented beneath his brusque manner. Mr. Rochester is tormented by his dark past and tragic secret; Rochester is in many ways trapped, and he is desperate for freedom from his own inner darkness and his past. Jane becomes a dear friend to him, not only because they are equals in intellect and in wit, a quality he enjoys, but because her purity and gentle spirit is a balm to his broken soul. He is a challenging character, a delicate balance between abrupt and sardonic, witty and sarcastic, tormented and hot-tempered, and tender and romantic. He is in his 30s. I imagine Rochester with a deep voice and a strong British accent. Best portrayal to reference is Timothy Dalton, 1983.

LINE CONTEXTS:

Line 1: Rochester is bitter and dark here, thinking of his dark past. He was unloved and manipulated by his family and is trapped in a dire situation, the result of a mistake in his youth.

Line 2: Rochester is deeply in love with Jane, but is at this point in time unsure if she reciprocates. He is being honest, but he is also toying with her a bit, as he has been trying to make her jealous up to this point. He is testing the waters, but *not nervously*.

Line 3: Rochester is completely heartbroken and hurt here. He adores Jane; she is everything to him. But now that is has been revealed that he legally cannot marry her, she is refusing to embrace or touch him.

  • I envy your peace of mind, your clean conscience, your unpolluted memory. A memory without blot of contamination must be an exquisite treasure-an inexhaustible source of pure refreshment: is it not?

  • Are you anything akin to me, do you think, Jane? Because I sometimes have a queer feeling with regard to you, especially when you are near me, as now: it is as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly and inextricably knotted to a similar string in you. And if that boisterous channel, and two hundred miles or so of land some broad between us, I am afraid that cord of communion will be snapt; and then I've a nervous notion I should take to bleeding inwardly.

  • Jane... You don't love me then? It was only my station and rank that you valued? Now that you think me disqualified to be your husband, you shrink back as if I were some toad or ape.

St. John is austere and ambitious. Along with his sisters, Mary and Diana, St. John (pronounced “Sinjin”) serves as Jane’s benefactor after she runs away from Thornfield, giving her food and shelter. The minister at Morton, St. John is cold, reserved, and often controlling in his interactions with others. He is not an unkind man, just a stiff-mannered and stubborn one.

LINE CONTEXT:

Line 1: St. John, though in love with another woman, is convinced that Jane has been brought here to accompany him in his missionary work in India. He is adamant that both he and Jane were made for this work. It is important to note that his proposal does not come from love for her, but from rigid faith.

Line 2: St. John has found Jane - whom he does not know - starving and freezing on his doorstep, accepting that she will die of starvation and want.

Line 3: St. John believes that Jane is a hard worker and is resolute on helping her find a new position and home.

  • God and nature intended you for a missionary’s wife. It is not personal but mental endowments they have given you; you are formed for labor, not love. A missionary’s wife you must—shall be.

  • All men must die, but all are not condemned to meet a lingering and premature doom, such as yours would be if you perished here of want

  • If such is your spirit, I promise to aid you, in my own time and way.

Mrs Fairfax is the housekeeper at Thornfield Hall. She likes to keep the house in order, ensuring everything is clean and organized for Rochester, the master of the house. Mrs Fairfax is very organized, welcoming and expects her team to keep their place and position. While she is kind, she can be judgmental.

LINE CONTEXT:

Line 1: Mrs. Fairfax has just welcomed Jane, who she believes to be her equal in rank. She is very kindly and welcoming.

Line 2: Mrs. Fairfax is concerned that Rochester is hiding something and Jane may not be safe.

  • I am so glad you have come. It will be very pleasant now living with a companion. To be sure it is pleasant at any time here at Thornfield, but in winter time, one feels dreary quite alone. I say alone. Leah is a nice girl to be sure, and John and his wife are decent people, but then, you see, they are only servants, and one can't converse with them on terms of equality.

  • Is it really for love he is going to marry you? (beat) I am sorry to grieve you, but you are so young and so little acquainted with men, I wished to put you on your guard.

Mrs Reed is Jane's aunt and she looks after Jane at Gateshead. Mrs Reed is cruel towards Jane, offering her little happiness and punishing her relentlessly. Mrs Reed idolises her children, John, Georgiana and Eliza, making them selfish, egotistical and arrogant.

LINE CONTEXT:

Lines 1 & 2: Mrs. Reed hates Jane and is bitter that she was left to her. She is attempting to admit her into a charitable school to get rid of her, and also to protect her reputation.

Line 3: Mrs. Reed is on her deathbed and has sent for Jane. She still hates her deeply but is tormented by the fact that she hid the knowledge of Jane's uncle in Madeira from her.

Gentle and kind to a fault, Helen is Jane's only friend in school. She is about 12 or 13. Helen is deeply religious and peaceful, and turns the other cheek to Lowood’s harsh policies. Although Helen manifests a certain strength and intellectual maturity, her efforts involve self-negation rather than self-assertion, and Helen’s submissive and ascetic nature highlights Jane’s more headstrong character. Like Jane, Helen is an orphan who longs for a home, but Helen believes that she will find this home in Heaven rather than Northern England. And while Helen is not oblivious to the injustices the girls suffer at Lowood, she believes that justice will be found in God’s ultimate judgment—God will reward the good and punish the evil.

LINE CONTEXT:

Line 1: Helen is not judging Jane with her words, but rather gently advising her. Helen has been victim of cruelty from one of the teachers at Lowood, but she believes that following the Biblical mandates of forgiveness and peace the best path. Her nature is soothing, not judgmental, kind, not hateful.

Line 2: At this point, Helen is dying. She is very sick, but she is at peace, believing she is going to heaven. She is assuring Jane of this.

He is legalistic and represents a harsh, cold subsect of religion. Brocklehurst wants the pupils of Lowood School to be modest and pious and he cruelly restricts their food rations. This is hypocritical, as his family enjoys very fine things and is not deprived of anything.

LINE CONTEXT:

Line 1: Mr. Brocklehurst has just met Young Jane, who Mrs. Reed has informed him as a bad disposition and is a liar. He is scolding and cold.
