It Came From Beneath the Stairs

It Came From Beneath the Stairs

Project Overview

Erin Brown has just moved to Minisville, Maine with her father (Thomson Brown), and her mother (Dairie Brown).  She has no friends.  Minisville Maine is a small town with almost nothing going for it besides a football team (that is mediocre at best).  Erin, however, meets a new friend named Hope Wilson who teaches her to get out there and be strong.  So, when her parents begin to fight downstairs every night and take the first steps to a divorce, Erin creates a monster in her mind that uses to rationalize her parents fighting.  Unfortunately, this monster becomes real.  Can she use her newfound strength to overcome the monster?  Or will she be overcome with sorrow?

Those auditioning for this show (Hope Wilson and Erin Brown) will also be asked to reprise their roles as an older version of each character in the next episode.

Erin Brown is a 7 year old girl who just moved to Maine. She is very unhappy about moving and has no friends.  Thusly, she is shy. She is a very impressionable girl, and loves her parents.

  • My name is Erin Brown and I’m 7 years old!  I just moved to Minisville, Maine, and I’m not sure I’m really excited about this.  I left all my friends behind and now I’m all alone here.  My mommy, Dairie Brown, said that we had to move here for daddy’s job.  I begged and begged them not to come here.  I wanted to stay in Ohio.  I told daddy I didn’t care what we had to do, he could even work as a butcher!  But no.  We had to move.

  • I don’t try to make mommy mad.  I really don’t, honestly.  But I think it’s like when I get really tired.  I get angry too when I’m tired.  And she’s not been sleeping well.  They think I don’t hear them, but when daddy comes home…  I’ve been kinda having trouble sleeping lately.  Maybe it’s the new house

  • I met a girl and her name is Hope Wilson and she’s kind of mean when you first meet her, but she gets nicer later on.  And Hope invited me down to the Creek so we went down to the Creek and we played and splashed around.  Mommy got a bit mad because I got mud in my hair and she told me a lady shouldn’t get mud in her hair, but I had a lot of fun and Hope was really nice to me and really glad I have a friend.

Dairie Brown is a tired adult.  She married Thomson Brown when she found out she was pregnant.  She dropped out of college and dedicated her life to taking care of the kid.  Now, she has regrets about living her life the way she did.  And she blames everything on Erin and Thomson.

  • We don’t have that kind of money right now!  We just moved to a new state for Pete’s Sake!  I can’t afford this!  You can’t afford this!  So I want you to go and get out of my sight right now before I get really angry.

  • It is your fault!  Everything’s been your fault!  I could be a nurse!  Now I’m looking after a kid.  A kid I never wanted.

  • That’s hardly fair!  I never ever wanted to leave her, but you made me get out of the apartment because (mimicking him) I’d go stir crazy!

Thomson Brown is a goofy, lovable dad.  He's the stereotypical "how ya doing sport!" kind of father.  He has trouble holding a job sometimes, and gets laid off (which is why they moved to Maine), but he stays as positive as possible, especially around Erin.

  • Good morning my wandering mud-maker!  How are we doing this morning?

  • Don’t ever say that about her, Dairie.  Never.  Because you’re the one who wanted a kid.  You’re the one who dropped out on purpose.  I didn’t make you do anything.  You wanted to put your life on hold and start a family.  I didn’t make you do anything.  And if you recall, the second I got home I took care of her as you went off to party with your friends you left at college.

  • Oh-ho.  Of course dear.  I’m glad to hear about your new friend.  But before we talk any more, how about some dinner, huh?  Are you hungry?

Hope Wilson is an 8 year old girl going to Minisville Elementary.  She was raised in Minisville her entire life.  She's a bit of a tomboy.  Her parents also don't tend to check on her very often, so she has freedom to do what she likes around town.

  • Hey mom!  Can I go play outside?   Beat.  See, when she doesn’t say anything it means yes.

  • Oh, thought that I haven’t seen your crooked face around here before.  Well, I’m gonna go talk to Ma and see if she’ll let me get out of the store a bit early.  If I can, wanna go down to the creek?

  • I’m Hope by the way.  Hope Wilson.  And I’m 8 years old!
