Hopefully Prompt Podcast, Series 2
Project Overview
Each season of this podcast, I’ll bringing listeners and viewers stories from authors around the world based on the same 5 word prompt. These stories come from authors of all backgrounds, ideas, thoughts, faiths, and ethnicities, but they all have one goal in common:
Deliver an emotional story that leaves you with hope!
The Hopefully Prompt Podcast is design to feature emerging writers and voice over artists, elevating their work and getting them in front of a new audience that will love what they do! This series will promoted and advertised to new audiences all over who are interested in positive, exciting stories by new and emerging artists of all backgrounds.
In series 2, I have one short story poem to cast, one short story, and several open slots for writers to submit their work. All stories are based on the same 5 word (or less) prompt. The story needs to feature this prompt as a central idea to the story and must offer the listener/reader hope! We are looking for 1,500 words or less in series 2 (there is no minimum word count required); short stories and poems are both welcome. Stories suitable for all ages is preferred.
The theme for series 2 is "Bedtime Stories." The prompt is "There once was a man/woman..." While everyone of every background is welcome to submit, there will be a focus on featuring non-white writers and actors in this series.
For authors: Your work must be entirely yours. By submitting, you agree that the piece is indeed yours, you are the owner, and pending agreement you are allowing me to produce it in audio and/or visual format.
This platform is designed to feature your work and help you build an audience/fans! So send me your contact info, website, previous work, or anything about what you do that you'd like featured if chosen for the show!
For Narrators: This series will be posted on YouTube. While not necessary, VO Artists willing to submit a video recording of their reading will be considered first; please indicate if you are willing to submit a video recording in the audition submission. The video does not need to be anything fancy. It can literally be a webcam recording of you reading in character the story, but the video must have a high quality audio recording. The video must also be against a plain or non-busy background. Put your best foot forward in the video!
For an example of the video style I like best for this series, see a YouTube video I did recently: Reflections video example on YouTube

This is a poem for series 1. It is 260 words long, so a short and quick read to produce. I'm looking for a mature voice, reflective on a life that has worked hard to help others. The poem has an undercurrent of hope, determination, and humility.
My hands are tired.
They have blistered under the heat of a thousand suns,
They have cracked at the fingernails,
Riddled with knots that burn as they twist and pry.
But I don’t stop moving them.
One day my hands will heal,
My back will straighten,
My head will clear,
My spirit will yield.
And on that day, it will be worth the journey.
It will be worth the work.
But for now,
I break my life
So that others may be born and mended.
Bixley's Christmas Wish is a short story with the tone of a Hallmark Christmas Movie. It is the story of an older woman who takes in a stray dog, and in doing so finds a loving connection with a gentile older man. Age for the woman and man would be in the 60's. In audition 1, I want to hear her annoyance at the dog. In 2, I want to hear playful teasing but not full fledged annoyance (she is starting to like the dog). And in 3, I want to hear the dynamic between her and George growing - she is starting to feel closer to him and this is a tender, flirtatious line they share at the end.
She gathered her three bags and began to head home. It wasn't long before she heard tiny footsteps crunching behind her. Joanne turned around to see Bixley standing there. His ears perked up as he sat back on his hind legs. The dog stared at her and licked his nose like, what? Why did you stop?
“You are a stubborn one, aren't you?” Joanne sat her bags down onto the gritty, salty cement. She reached down to feel the fur around his neck. “Hmm. No tags. Who do you belong to?”
Joanne sat on the porch swing, watching the stars as Bixley scampered about in the snow. She contemplated how they would handle getting him to the veterinarian tomorrow, and Joanne was hopeful that his rightful owner would be found.
Joanne grabbed a few old towels from the linen closet and tossed them down onto the floor in her bedroom. “This is your bed.” Joanne pointed to the pile of towels on the floor. “Stay out of mine.”
As the truck pulled into the driveway, Carl Jr burst through the front door and ran outside to greet them. "I knew it! I knew you would keep him!” Tears were welling up in his eyes as Joanne handed Randy the leash.
“George, why don't you stay for dinner?” Joanne asks. She tries not to blush as she climbs out of the truck.
George grinned in agreement, “Maybe I can help you walk the dog.” They both laugh as they wander inside.
