Gmod Funnies: Casting Call (Storyboard Edition)
Project Overview
For those who are unaware, Gmod Funnies is an animated series that fuses Garry’s Mod animation with 2D animation and Looney Tunes slapstick. It has a variety of different segments, most of which take place either in or around the Mushroom Kingdom. The main idea is to embrace the cartoony nature of the Mario universe and bring different twists on certain Mario/Nintendo characters. (There are also some non-Nintendo elements like Sonic, Rabbids, etc. but the series is written in a way that doesn’t come off as glorified fanfiction.)
This time around, we're mainly looking for storyboard artists (Something we never put much thought into until recently). However, as always, there are extra roles in there to work with like singing roles, a model-making role, and of course, more characters to voice. There’s a whole line-up of funny characters, memorable villains, and even a plethora of musical numbers planned.

Despite this being a 3D project animated in Gmod, storyboards still play a big part in the production. It gives the animators a good idea of what's needed in the animation. How the characters should move, where the camera should be positioned, etc.
It can even help voice actors know how the scene should play out and what kind of tone should be put into each of their lines.
Don't be afraid to make your storyboarded scenes more cartoony. Gmod may have its limits, but remember that more expressive shots or complex movements can be enhanced with 2D effects.

While we usually work with what we've got in terms of models, there are times when we need certain characters to be made/ported into Gmod. Sometimes we have original character designs that need to be made into models before being ported. Other times we want to enhance existing models or make their rigs easier to work with. This is one of those roles that seem minor on the surface but will really come in handy in the future.

Much like any cartoon, GMF will have its fair share of Musical numbers. And much like any musical, you can't get by with just one singer. You need a whole cast to get those musical juices flowing.
This is for male singers. We're not looking for any hardcore death metal or anything. I'm thinking of something more in line with a barbershop quartet or even musical groups like 'The Beetles' and 'Green Day'. (Reminder: The most prominent genres in the show are Jazz, Big Band, Electro Swing, Steampunk, and Pop.)

Voice Actor
A chill and deep-spoken Dry Bones who’s best known for musical numbers, singing back-ally swing songs with his Dry Bone backup singers. The design is very much inspired by the character, Bonejangles from “Corpse Bride”. Meanwhile, the voice reference we picked out is the radio legend known as Wolfman Jack, who's very much famous for his gravelly voice.

Voice Actor
A mischievous trickster who’s heavily based on Beetlejuice himself. Just say his name 3 times and he’ll scare up some good ol’ fashion show biz. Think of the voice as a mixture of all three variations of Beetlejuice. The movie, the cartoon, and the musical.

Voice Actor
The titular main antagonist from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, played by Tim Curry himself. In the GMF universe, he’s portrayed as a ghost who haunts the local Mushroom graveyard. How did he get there? I don’t know.
(Also, there’s no Gmod model of Frank N. Furter, so he’ll be animated in 2D. Sorry if the pfp clashes with the others.)

Being a ghost has it's ups and downs, but I've learned to live with it.
It's like I always say, there's no crime in giving yourself over to pleasure.
Don't be upset. It was a mercy killing. He had a certain naive charm...but no muscle.
Voice Actor
He has no style. He has no grace. This Kong has a funny face. Lanky can kinda be seen as comic relief in the Donkey Kong segment of the show. Being an Orangutan, the first voice that comes to mind for Lanky is that of King Louie from The Jungle Book. Much like Louie, he also likes to dance and party. He’s also pretty laid back and rarely takes things seriously.

If you know about the Donkey Kong Country TV show, then Bluster Kong needs no introduction. He’s a sly kong who usually doesn't get along with others due to his arrogance and greediness. Probably one of the most straightforward characters of this Casting Call. (though the render/model isn’t finalized. I had to photoshop it.)

Many may recall this character as a scrapped Kong from Donkey Kong Land. It’s been speculated that this Fedora Kong is actually a grown-up Donkey Kong Jr., so I decided to roll with that idea. Fedora Kong is the father of the current Donkey Kong. He left the jungle in order to become a big-time movie star and is pretty successful. I have no real voice reference for him other than that of a typical loving father. He may have abandoned his son, but he still loves him very much.

Son, I know that leaving to be a movie star wasn’t wise of me, but I just wanna tell you that I’m proud of what you accomplished. You and your friends have succeeded in protecting your island home time and time again, and I never thought I’d be the father of such a heroic ape. Now get out there and show that crooked king who’s boss.
Voice Actor
The classic green Yoshi that you all know and love. This variation of the character is cautious and reserved, yet still fun-loving and happy-go-lucky. He'd be nice to talk to if you're able to understand him. Unfortunately, his true voice can only be heard by both the audience and other Yoshis. Everyone else only hears typical Yoshi noises. If you were to hear his voice though, he’d mainly sound like Finn from "Adventure Time" mixed in with a bit of Ash from “Pokemon”. Typical protagonist voice, I know, but sometimes that’s all you need for a character.

Voice Actor
A Light Blue Yoshi with very little intelligence. He mostly thinks about food and can be very rambunctious. As such, his voice reference would naturally be that of Chowder from the 2007 Cartoon Network show of the same name. Make sure to capture his hyperactive energy.

A Yellow Yoshi who's incredibly adventurous. He's always ready to jump into adventure and is very stubborn at times. When designing this character, I immediately thought of Knuckles from the Sonic OVA. His voice would be somewhat similar to that. However, another voice that came to mind was the voice of Snufkin from the 1990's Moomin anime. I would say try to find a nice balance between those two.

Voice Actor
Despite being a Rayman Rabbid, he doesn’t associate himself with the other loudmouth Rabbids. He prefers to be seen as “normal” while doing his job as a police detective. Harvey and his Rabbid friends were inspired by the Goodfethers from “Animaniacs”, which in it of itself is based on the 1990’s film “Goodfellas”. In this case, Harvey would have a voice similar to Squit, who’s based on Henry Hill. He’s usually the voice of reason out of the three of them.

As far back as I can remember, we rabbids weren't considered all too bright. Most rabbids tend to scream a lot and act like wild animals.
I personally was never into such activities. I wanted live life like a normal person. Get a job, communicate with other people, stuff like that.
Now I wouldn't get this opportunity until I moved into the city. Mushroom City to be exact. It's not exactly the friendliest place on earth, but at least the folks here tend to act like actual people...for the most part.

A haughty, New York-speaking Rabbid who’s quick to anger. Aside from birds, he seems pretty hostile to everything around him. He’s the second of our Rabbid trio and has the voice of Pesto from “Animaniacs”, or more specifically, Joe Pesci. As such, he tends to misinterpret a lot of things Harvey says when complimenting them.

A chill and suave Rabbid who knows the streets very well. He’s often seen brushing his hair and hanging out with Harvy and Buck. As the third of our Rabbids, his voice is based on Bobby from “Animaniacs”, or more specifically, Robert De Niro. Keep in mind, I haven’t seen any Robert De Niro films. I just know that Bobby is based on said actor.

Tak is one of Clarence's assistants of mischief. She's a flamboyant country koopa with a huge passion for both carnival and circus life. Her loveable attitude and care towards the other misfits are pretty much why Clarence hired her in the first place. There isn't much I can say outside of make her sound like a fun-loving country girl.

Here we have a young scientist who some characters may turn to for assistants. She’s shown to be intelligent, quiet, bitter, and utterly ruthless. It kind of goes without saying that she’s basically Mandy from “The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy”, just as an Octoling scientist. I do apologize for the blatantly unoriginal name.

A pair of metallic twin Chao constructed as evil minions. They cause mischief wherever they go but usually stay home in their master’s laboratory. Both of their voices are meant to be high-pitched and robotic.
