(This casting call is closed.)
--------------------
This is an unpaid project.
My goal with this project is to make a fully cast, genderbent cover for the song "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from Disney's Mulan, and to post it to YouTube as a combination gender equality video and tribute to the original movie/song. I'll be showing video clips, images, and text on-screen to talk about sexism while the song plays. There will not be any adult/work-unsafe material sung OR shown. This will be a clean project, though sexism itself is a sensitive subject. And just to be clear - this video will focus on sexism against men, although the aim is to promote equality for both men and women (of course).
I'm not sure what else to say about the project, but if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask me! :)
RULES:
1. The deadline for auditions is July 15th, 2016. I won't cast anyone before the deadline, and I will make a casting decision and/or extend the deadline if needed no later than July 18th.
2. I NEED to hear your singing voice WITHOUT music, so I can hear you properly. :) If you want to use music in your audition, just make sure to also upload a copy with no music.
3. You can audition for as many roles as you want, but aside from the chorus I will *try* to spread out roles as much as possible!
4. Please make sure to sing your words as clearly as possible. This is the number one criteria, even before singing ability, acting ability, OR mic quality.
Please have fun! :D

Since I've gotten all the lines collected from most of the cast, I've set up a 2-week deadline from today for everyone who still hasn't gotten their lines back to me. Don't worry; this does NOT, I repeat NOT mean that if you haven't gotten your lines back yet, that you're in the slightest bit of trouble. :) This is just how I'm going about keeping the project moving to be fair both to people who have busy lives and haven't had a chance yet, and also to people who have turned in their lines already and are waiting to see the finished project.
Once it's complete, I *will* link the finished video back here to this project page. I will also send each and every cast member involved a PM or e-mail with the link; so don't worry about missing it. As of now, I'm planning to release the video in the second half of September, and no later than the first week of October if I need to recast anyone and extend the deadline 2 weeks from there.
Thank you SO, SO much to everyone who auditioned! Auditions are closed now, and I'll be making casting decisions and sending messages to everyone over the weekend, no later than Monday the 18th.
I'd really love to hear from some more guys, too -- so far, only one male singer has auditioned, and though there isn't as *much* singing for the male roles as for the females, I'd still like to include a strong male chorus for one section, and Ping should be voiced by a male as well.
I really mean it, thank you! I'm blown away by all the auditions so far, and can't believe how many auditions I've received just in the first few days. :) After the deadline, I promise to respond to each audition personally, and if there's anything at all I would want anyone to do differently that makes a difference to my casting decision, I WILL let you know immediately so you have time to submit a new audition before the deadline.
Looking for a medium to medium-high range (mezzo soprano or alto) voice. As with Shang, I'd like to stick as close to the original as possible, just with a female singer. Singing ability is appreciated but not required; acting is more important.
Sing:
"Now I really wish that I knew how to swim"
Ironically, I'd really like to find a good singer for Female Ling, because the song I have in mind is serious rather than humor, and will be performed a capella in the finished video. I'm really looking for a mezzo soprano or soprano voice if possible, since Ling already has a fairly high voice in the original.
Sing: "Boy, was I a fool in school for cutting gym"
(OPTIONAL)
Sing any few lines from "A Girl Worth Fighting For", non-comedically if possible.

NOTE: Either original lyrics OR genderbent are equally fine for the audition, neither will be in the finished video. I have different lyrics for the same tune, which I'll share with the person cast as Female Ling, and that song will roll with the credits. If the singer for Female Ling does NOT want to sing that song, I will just sing it myself, which is why this is optional. :)
I'm looking for great singing and a strong alto voice. I'd like to stick as close to the original as possible, just with a female singer. Singing and acting ability will be weighed equally for this role.
Sing:
"Let's get down to business
To defeat the huns
When I asked for daughters
Did they send me sons?"
I am looking for a distinctly male, but also young, tenor voice (teenager through young adult).
Sing: "Hope she doesn't see right through me!"
I am looking for any and every voice for the chorus. If you can sing in more than one range, please aim for alto (females) or baritone (males), and feel free to audition in as many vocal ranges as you would like. Preference will NOT be given to those with a wide singing range, but you MIGHT be asked to sing more than one chorus role if you can do it, depending on the number of total auditions.
Sing:
"We must be swift as the coursing river
With all the force of a great typhoon
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon"
Looking for that distinct gravelly "smoker" voice, but DOES need to sound female. Singing ability is really very secondary for this role, personality and voice type are more important. This is the only line that will use Yao's distinct voice; please submit a separate audition if you'd like to be in the chorus as well!
Sing:
"Say goodbye to those who knew me"
Did I mention she was the Great Stone Dragon? ;) Looking for just a bit of sass of course, and a slight urban accent would be a plus but not required. Medium pitch is ideal. Singing ability is really very secondary for this role, personality and voice type are more important.
Sing: "This gal's got 'em scared to death"
