Forbidden Sea (An Old Theatre Project)
Project Overview
I found this script. It was from my freshman year of highschool and it was my final. I was interested in just making a short animation because it didn't go well when we performed it. Yes, its written for the stage but I think we could reshape it. This is based on the book Forbidden Sea. The main character is Adrianne Keynnman, a young teenage girl who is strong, good-hearted and very human.
The book is about Adrianne, who lives on an island that has been haunted by a mermaid for 100 years. The last time the mermaid visited the island, she took a girl named Lady Lauretta, the daughter of a lord, into the sea, and the girl never returned. Now, it appears that the mermaid is after Adrianne's little sister, Cecily.
Aside from this weighing on her mind, Adrianne also battles through other problems: loving a boy who does not return her affection; living with a little sister who Adrianne thinks is prettier than herself and who is also the favorite of her cruel, condescending Auntie Minnah; putting up with her callous peers; and trying to provide for her poverty-stricken family after the tragic death of her father.
"(Adrianne) is a very strong person, but because the people of the island don't see her that way . . . she doesn’t realize how truly wonderful she is," said Nielson.
*smiles faintly* No, I belong here. But, I did see your daughter when I was there. She is as beautiful as she was said to be. She has barely aged seven years since a hundred years ago thanks to the ocean's magic.
*laughs smiling* Really. She said, "Tell my father not to worry, that I am happy where I am."
*Shakes head, smiling soothingly* No, Denn, my place is here. *Promises*
Denn is kind and loyal. He is like Fred and George but nicer and will always be by your side. He is loving and kind and gentle.
I was... scared *admits* that... you wouldn't come back. Like you'd be like Lady Lauretta.
Shall we dance? *Extends hand to Adrianne smiling*
*gentle and soft* I would never do that Adri... You know I hated the way people talked to you...
Lord Durran is a dignified higher class man. But he is still kind. He sounds a little condescending but really isn't.
*Shakes head* Adrianne Keynnman is a fine young lady.
*nods* Thank you, Miss. Keynnman. You have put my heart at ease.
*Sad* I know the story... And, I am aware of what this means...
Captain Clark is the older of the two captains. He is kind of mean and like he has seen all the bad in the world.
*Telling a Story* say Lauretta met her fate while wandering the sparkling shores, as she was wont to do on warm summer days. Others say she was lured from her bed late one night by the enchanting echoes of an eerie melody, which lead her to climb out across the rocks at the edge of the ocean.
*nods in agreement* Aye. That she is. That I can’t deny but...
*Lifts pipe, puffs and sighs wearily* Aye, I heard. Young Adrianne, stolen by that cursed mermaid, right?
Captain Carson is the young captain of the two. He has more of a hopeful air about him, But there is also a sense of wisdom to him. He is mature and is in his mid-twenties.
*Frowns tossing stone, catches it and rubs thumb on it* Aye, the cursed girl.
There is more to this then it seems... *Thoughtful.
