Fig Leaves

Fig Leaves

Project Overview

Fig Leaves

NEW: OFFICIAL FIG LEAVES FILM WEBSITE

When Friclan, a recently graduated art student completes his first piece, he is eager to display it in the local art gallery. However, when he unveils the piece the gallery owner appears shocked and refuses to buy it.

Shunned and confused at the vagueness of his rejection, stubborn Friclan becomes aggravated and enlists the help of an old friend, Teepa, a well-travelled outlander who offers to guide him to the different cities within the kingdom. Together, the two venture to find a gallery that will purchase and display the piece, but soon begin to realise that this may be more difficult than they first imagined.

Fig Leaves a fantastical drama that explores the topic of censorship within the creative arts, inspired by past and current situations of censorship within film, TV and music videos.
The film is set in a land inhabited by personified plants: for example Teepa is a fig tree and Friclan is a purple heart plant and this carries through into their designs!

Production Details:

  • This is an independent short film that I am producing for my dissertation project at university.
  • The film will be stop-motion animated film that will use papercraft puppets and miniature sets. The animation technique will be similar to that of Giangrande's music video for 'Paper Plane'.
  • A fantasy/drama film.
  • The film follows two main characters: Teepa and Friclan. The dialogue is largely halved between these two characters with supporting/extra roles also having a few lines.
  • Links to concept art, snippets of the storyboard and a preview of the puppets I will be creating will be posted below!

Before you Audition!

  • This film features profanity so please make sure you're comfortable with this when you apply!
  • Please ensure you have a clear microphone.
  • This is a 13 page script which falls dialogue heavy on the two main characters.
  • If you are casted, it would be ideal that you deliver the lines within two weeks so I am able to begin animating the dialogue scenes as soon as possible! Please keep this time constraint in mind when applying.

Thank you for your interest in my project! I look forward to hearing any and all auditions that I receive!

Basic Info
Name: Friclan (Frick-Lun)
Gender: Male, He/Him

Brooding, Prideful and Creative

A talented artist who takes great pride in his work, Friclan is passionate and headstrong, perhaps more-so stubborn. His past of petty crime and an impoverished upbringing burdens him with a need to prove himself to those he sees as 'better' than him, however, his prideful nature often conflicts with this. He can be cold and even harsh to those who mean well.

Friclan has a very introverted even 'moody' way of carrying himself that can come off as dismissive or snooty which should be reflected in his voice. Aside from that he speaks calmly and formally, perhaps sometimes overly so.

  • (Frustrated)
"I just wish they'd give me answers..."
    (Blurted, Stammering in annoyance.)
"How can they tell me in one breath that my art is 'offensive' or 'treasonous' and then in another deflect the question when I ask them how? I just don't understand-!"

  • (With false confidence)

"I can't... I've come this far... I spent three years on this... I can't go back empty handed."

  • (Sheepishly)

"Y-You don't have to do that for me..."

Basics
Name: Teepa (Tee-Puh)
Gender: Female, She/Her
(This character uses profanity)

Optimistic, Outgoing and Loyal

A charismatic, quick-witted traveller with an inclination towards looking at the bright side of things; Teepa is no stranger to being the person people turn to when in need of some encouragement. However, her rosy outlook on life is often her downfall, finding it difficult to understand other points of view and coming off as blunt or ignorant.

Friclan has a very introverted even 'moody' way of carrying himself that can come off as dismissive or snooty which should be reflected in his voice. Aside from that he speaks calmly and formally, perhaps sometimes overly so.

Teepa is outgoing and cheerful at the best of times, her voice appears relaxed and loose but enthusiastic. She speaks informally, perhaps even 'commonly' compared to Friclan.

  • (Smirking)
"Maybe they don't know why themselves. People who don't leave city walls are like that, y'know..."
(Tapping on the side of her head with her finger)
"Don't know how to use their own noodle. Don't know any different."

  • (Unintentionally Blunt.)
“If you're so horned up at the idea of selling this piece, why don't you just make the changes?”

  • (Frustrated, Irate)
“No! I wanna know! I didn't walk for weeks on end to hear this shit over and over again!”

The upper-class proprietor of an art gallery in the final city Teepa and Friclan travel to. They are direct and have an air of superiority around them.

They speak with a posh, perhaps even pompous tone to their voice. They are articulate and calm.

  • (Trying to let down easy)
“It's just not what we're looking for.”

  • (Interested, Contemplating)
    “Well... It's certainly... Expressive.”
