Ethereal Blaze Concept Audio Drama
Project Overview
- Budget increase! -
We've been able to increase the budget for this project which is great! It's still modest but I'm glad to be able to offer a bit more to the VAs and offer some to the audio engineers!
Ethereal Blaze is an original project I've been working on for a while now. I wrote out a first episode draft and I decided I'd like to turn it into an audio drama concept to use to draw some interest! I definitely intend to take it further than that, but for now I'm just looking for some voice talent for this to get things started off, and have something to present. It'll also help me get a sense if it'll be generally long enough for an episode, but mainly it's just for fun!
The show premise; A young man finds out rather suddenly that he's a prince who narrowly escaped death as an infant, and has to decide what to do next.
My favourite part about this is definitely the villains, anti-heroes, and twists I've come up with, and I'm really looking forward to sharing the ideas!
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out via messages, or my discord: Skyeky
I'm not expecting the first episode to be more than an hour of dialogue for any given character, and some characters will only have a couple of lines each.
To audition, please have;
A quality microphone
Minimal to no background noise
A clear voice
Don't add any of your own sound design such as sound effects, muffling, etc
Communication through discord is likely going to be how we do things, so a discord account would be important but not absolutely necessary
Payments will be done through paypal so please ensure you have a paypal account
- PRONUNCIATIONS -
(I didn't think of this right away and only added it later, so if you already submitted an audition with an incorrect pronunciation, don't worry about it, I won't be factoring that in! This is just for convenience for future auditioners!)
Names:
Ilyn - il-in
Isla - eye-lah
Shur - sure
Averyn - eh-ver-in
Ander - and-er
Witherrow - wither-oh
Locations:
Celenia - se-lee-nee-ah
Ossai - Oh-sai
That should be everything you need to know, I think the rest are common enough but please don't hesitate to ask me if you're unsure!
This project is based out of Canada, and is therefore paid in Canadian currency, which may not be the same value as the currency of your country of origin, PSA to avoid confusion later!
Thank you very much for your interest in Ethereal Blaze, and I look forward to working with you!
(As you can see, I'm still working on drawing character design headshots, bear with me haha! Check back to see if the character you auditioned for doesn't have an image yet, I'll be adding them as I go!)

Asher is a naive optimist. He's a bit of a himbo prince type at the beginning of his character arc, or maybe golden retriever. A really great example for his voice type/speech patterns is Odysseus from Epic the musical, specifically his playful banter with Athena in the song Warrior of the Mind.
Asher has yet to face serious danger or consequence in his life, until his village is razed by an angry god. At the same time, he learns the life he lived up until that moment was a lie. He takes it in stride on the outside for the most part in his early character arc. He discovers his family was burned alive when he was an infant, and the guardian who raised him switched his place with another baby, allowing him to escape. He knew nothing of this until he was twenty years old, and was forced to come to terms with the truth very quickly in order to escape with his life.

[Responding to being told the truth for the first time about him being a prince by birth] "Wait, you don't mean me, do you? Ha! I'm not a prince, Just an orphan raised at the temple! Ilyn found me in a house just outside Ossai's walls and brought me back here, right Ilyn?" [Pause] "...right?"
[Sounding shocked, guilty and horrified as he learns how his life was spared] "Ilyn... a baby died because of me. He died in place of me... he burned because I... why? Because of my blood... I'm more important..?"
For the last line, please try some fighting yells and screams, and additionally, you can either do some improv for extra credit, or this line: [Trying to break awkward silence with conversation] "So.... your brother's an owl. How uh... how'd that happen-?
Asher's guardian, and the one who rescued him from the castle, despite having to pay a heavy price to do so. His voice is medium deep and stoic, he's extremely serious (especially with Asher) and can be quite witty. He cares deeply for Asher, seeing him as his own son in a way, but doesn't like to express those feelings. He's usually occupied with deeprooted anger towards an event in his past that makes it difficult for him to connect with others now. He's a half human, half elf, and he grew up in the castle with Asher's father who took him and his brother in as children. To return the king's kindness, they were able to save his son from being executed with the rest of his family, and they fled to the other side of the world. For an unknown reason, after the castle escape, a huge rift was driven between Ilyn and his brother, whom he will hardly ackowledge as a brother at all anymore.

[Annoyed by Asher talking over him trying to explain something important] "If you'd let me finish a sentence, you might know the answer to that."
[Telling Asher how he survived the massacre of his family. He sounds stoic, but like he's trying to hide the guilt of what he had to do with a gruff, serious exterior] "I took the child, and swapped him with you. [Pause] You were still so small that any infant would have served our purpose. So I switched your places, and you, my brother and I escaped the palace. We swore to the king that we would protect him and his family... but all we could do for him was protect his bloodline."
For this, please try some fighting yells, and screams. For some extra credit you can also do a bit of improv, or say this line! [Sounding afraid and distraught] Brother... what are you going to do?"
Blaire is a core cast protagonist, descended from a well known family of people who have visions of the past, present and future. She comes to Asher the day his village is destroyed with a warning, getting herself swept up into the battle for the throne. She has a sweet midrange voice and is intended to have an Estonian accent. For reference, check out Esther from the movie Orphan. However, feel free to try different accents, like Russian for example, or something like Jester from Critical Role.
Blaire is a bit of an oddball or eccentric, she talks to an owl she always has on her shoulder, and even addresses him as her brother. She does have personal reasons for being invested in Asher's journey to retake his crown, in the form of taking her home back from her aunt. Blaire was a noble from the same country where Asher was born, but several years ago, her aunt killed her family and drove her out. She's been in hiding ever since.

[Talking to her owl] "Atlas... do you think... if the prince goes home... if he takes his castle back... do you think we'll be able to go home, too? [Pause] I know, I won't get my hopes up. But still, I can't help but wonder what it look like now..." [Wistful and nostalgic]
[Meeting Asher for the first time after saving him from a fall] "Aha, I knew it, it is you! See Atlas? We found him!" [Pause, change tone from excited, to embarrased from her over the top burst of excitement] "Ah- well, no, not really, I just saw you once before! Ah... well actually that might be a bit confusing... let me start over. My name is Blaire Witherrow, and this is my brother, Atlas!"
For the last line, please try some fighting yells, as well as screams. In addition you can either do a little bit of improv, or say this line for some extra credit! [Sounding frightened, uneasy and confused] "What's... going on? Atlas, why did it get dark all of the sudden?"
Isla Witherrow is one of the core antagonists, and Blaire's aunt. She is madly in love with King Ander, the one who currently sits on Asher's throne. Like Blaire, she's intended to speak with an Estonian accent, but same as Blaire feel free to try some other similar accents with her! She's somewhat delusional, her and Ander are similar to Harley Quinn and the Joker, but instead of abuse, Ander just flat out ignores her for the most part. But still she persists, and she is definitely considered his right hand lady. She's exceptionally powerful, and has a relatively high pitched voice. Like Blaire, she is a seer, and being more experienced with her power, will become an absolutely pain in the ass for the protagonists. She's proud, but obeys Ander and only Ander without question. Isla is almso semi-immortal, she won't age, but she can be killed. A power she gained by making a deal with a pair of demons in exchange for the lives of her family, which she did so she could server Ander forever.

[Surprised, a little confused] "Huh? How did you figure that out?" [Pause] "Ah, and that's why we follow you, my love. You consider every possibility! So smart!"
[Sounding offended and caught off guard] "Excuse you!" [Pause, calming down to be annoyed] "I wouldn't expect a god to understand the human heart."
For this, please try some battle yells, and Isla has a very 'extra' personality to her, which comes across in her vocalizations. Think something like a feminine elegant Preminger from Barbie Princess and the Pauper, so some offended gasps or something would be great! For extra credit, you can do some improv, or this line! [Fed up, but not angry, just annoyed/bored] "You're a terrible conversationalist."
The big bad evil king, the stoic of all stoics. He's so expressionless aside from mild annoyance/anger, some people question if he's even human. His goals are vague and unclear, but he was skipped over in the line of succession in favour of his younger brother, and as his temper grew, he was eventually banished from his kingdom. Many years later, he returned with a fallen god with him, and overthrew and murdered his younger brother and his wife, daughter and son, burning them all alive.
He is, or at least seems, completely uninterested in Isla, who is head over heels for him. He knows, but doesn't seem to care.

[Thinking as he remembers the last thing his brother said to him, having a revelation after finding out Asher survived and escaped] I wonder... [Pause] Is this what you meant? I took it as you cursing my name with your final breath but... maybe the plan to save the prince... was your doing."
[Discussing plans after learning Asher escaped the destruction of Ossai] I see. No matter then. Isla, I'll leave you in charge of tracking the prince down. But, it's not a priority. Continue to focus on the main goal."
For this, do some battle yells, and you can also do some improv for extra credit, or say this line! [Finding out Asher is still alive] "If he wants to take my crown, let him come to try."
Shur is a fallen god, his domains are wrath, trickery and grief. He was married to the goddes of death, repose and renewal, Nexmir, but cheated on her and had a child with an unknown woman, whom he had to charm to even get her to fall in love with him, but the charm eventually broke. He's reserved and quiet, but steadfast. He still shows signs of caring for Nexmir, but at the same time, seems very detached. He loves his child dearly though. He has more than a few secrets that I can't disclose until he's cast, but there's a lot of depth to his character, and he's done some terrible things, and will continue to do more terrible things. So if you love a fucked up and tragic villain, this is your guy. He speaks in a very deadpan way.

[Speaking to Isla telepathically while he's destroying Ossai and looking for Asher] Isla... your niece is here. And... your spell is fading. At this rate, I'm not going to be able to catch the prince. I told you I should have just come here in person."
[Remarking to Isla that king Ander doesn't seem to care about her] "You have low standards, Isla." [Pause] "We've spent the last twenty years together. Ander and I, even longer than that, and not once has he ever acknowledged you. Why do you bother?"
For this, some improv will do, or you can say this line! "A god's heart is no different from your own. It's not like I can't feel love. After all, love is what led us here."
Ilyn's brother who lives in a different nearby city across a river. He only has a couple of lines in episode one, but will have a bit more later on. He's more calm and reserved than Ilyn with a more mild mannered attitude. Ilyn greatly dislikes Averyn after the events of the castle massacre, although Averyn seems to feel more guilty towards his brother than angry, but it still fuels their conflict. He's going to have a surprise in his character arc, which I can discuss with te cast voice actor when the time comes! Averyn is tall, slender and graceful, and his voice should have an air of elegance to match that. His voice is a mid register, but I'm open to interpretations for him!
Averyn only has like three lines or so, but if I continue the project past episode one he'll have more, it depends on the project's success in the audiodrama format!

[Sounding exhasperated, trying to convince his brother of something with very little time left to act] "Ilyn, we can't fight a god! What choice do we have?"
[Opening the door to see his brother has come to visit] "Ah, hello Ilyn. What brings you back here again so soon? You only just left a few weeks ago."
For this one you can do some improv, or say this line! [Referring to Ilyn refusing to acknowledge Averyn as his brother anymore] "He's right. It... would be wrong to refer to us as brothers, after what's happened."
Ambrose Gardenia was the king chosen for the throne, and is the father of Asher and younger brother of Ander, one of the main antagonists. He was an exceptionally kind and thoughtful man who excelled in everything he did, which made his elder brother resent him over time. Ambrose being chosen by their father to rule finalized the destruction of their relationship, and it ended in Ander's banishment from the kingdom. Ambrose felt sorry for his brother, and guilty for not being able to help him control his anger, but he went on to have a good family and a healthy kingdom. You know... until his brother came back and cooked him. His voice should be soft and delicate, in the mid to high range. A good example of this would be the English voice of Edgar Redmond in the Black Butler Public School Arc, minus the English accent.
Ambrose only has one line in the first episode, he will have more later on if I continue this project, which will depend on its success in audiodrama format!

[His last words to Ander before being burned alive] "You may burn this body to ash, but the true king of Celenia will not die. You have my word... brother."
[Talking to his wife about taking in two young orphans (Ilyn and Averyn)] "They're only children, Maria, they're not dangerous. And besides, what if it were our children? Wouldn't you want someone to be generous enough to look after them, if something ever happened to us?"
For this one, a bit of improv will do, or you can say this line! [Aruging with Ander before he was banished] Ander, you have to stop it, get ahold of yourself! If you follow this path it will lead you to ruin!"
Sort of an extra role, in the opening of the audio drama, Ilyn is catching a ride back with a carriage driver to Ossai and has a short conversation with him. Voice type doesn't necessarily matter and neither does gender, but they should have a more southern style accent! Or something like Hagrid from Harry Potter, that would be fitting!

[Talking about Ilyn and Asher] "You live in the temple, you run the show there most days. And lookinā after that kidās a handful on its own, ya never ask for help, so I had to find somethinā I could do for ya."
[After Ilyn tells him it was Asher's birthday recently] "Well, wish āem a happy birthday for me, would ya?"
Background chatter, screams of melting city, an occasional throw away line here and there! Anyone who has a demo reel is free to submit that instead for this role!

"Where have you been? Ilyn's been looking for you."
Try some screams or panicked dialogue, anything you think would fit an average person caught up in a city being rained down on with literal fire and explosive lightning!
Feel free to submit a demo reel!
I intend to do this mostly by myself, but help with making the actual audio portion would be amazing, as I'm not super experienced. Submit some of your mixing/editing/sound design work! I intend to use Audacity as it's just what I have access to but I am open to recommendations and suggestions.
