Project Overview

What is Dope Knight?

Dope Knight is a fanfiction parody of Hollow Knight, the hit indie game by Team Cherry. Though most of my projects are serious, with the encouragement of my friends, I decided to go ahead and make something silly, just this once. The story is mainly centred around a nonsensical representation of Hallownest, the main kingdom from the game…except most of the bugs are passionate about drugs.

The main story is a series of written chapters filled with debauchery and humour. There are to be four ‘books’ in total, two of which have been completed already. I am currently writing the third, and the fourth will follow later. I’ve considered having voice actors read the characters’ lines before, but haven’t been brave enough to put out a casting call until now. 

I am also working on a graphic novel adaptation of the first story. At the moment I am only looking to narrate the written version, but if I do decide to dub the comic I will let you know. Therefore, please bear in mind that your talents could also be used in a comic dub!

What You’ll Be Doing

As a voice actor, you’ll be translating the characters’ dialogue into actual spoken lines. For some characters, I have a very clear idea of how I want their voices to sound, and specifics will be listed in their individual roles. For others however, I’m happy to let you interpret them as you see fit.

Credit and Publicity

Although Dope Knight is a small project, I’d like to release a complete audio version featuring everyone’s talents to the public as well as my friends. You will be credited wherever I choose to upload it, likely in a description if not outright in the recording itself.

Dope Knight as a story is currently publicly available on AO3 (Archive of Our Own). When it is finished, the comic version will also be published online.

Rules:

  • You must be at least 18 to audition. This project contains adult themes such as slight NSFW references and drug usage.
  • You must have a Discord account. If you are chosen for the role, Discord will be the main form of contact.
  • Please provide good audio quality in your audition! That means minimal background noise and a good mic.
  • You may audition for multiple roles!

If you haven’t played Hollow Knight - don’t worry! This fanfiction deviates enough from the original work that there are minimal spoilers. However, some characters appearing in the late game reprise their original roles here, so if you’re concerned about that then I recommend playing the game first!

    Hi again everyone!

    I've decided that the call will be open indefinitely. As I'm still going through some personal issues that may not be resolved for a while, I want to leave this open so that anyone can still apply.

    I want you to know that if you have auditioned for a role, I haven't forgotten about you! I've received some fantastic takes and I might even start casting for characters with more tryouts.

    Hi everyone!

    I'm so sorry for the radio silence on here. I've been meaning to make an update for a while, but I've been having some mental health problems that have interfered with many of my projects, this included.

    I'd just like to thank everyone who has auditioned so far. All of your auditions are absolutely stunning and they blew me away! It means a ton to me that you're all interested in my project enough to get involved.

    As there are still roles without auditions, I've extended the deadline to January 2024 to allow ample time for anybody else who's interested to give it a shot. I look forward to hearing your takes on the characters!

Ghoncl is the main protagonist of the series. He is loud, uncouth, brash and goofy, and is also a drug addict. He’s often found joking around with his friends and annoying his siblings. For his voice I imagine him to sound a bit like Cartman from South Park, but feel free to do your own spin on his character!

Hornet is Ghoncl’s older half-sister. She is typically mature and responsible, but is quick to jump to violence if words fail. She’s an experienced warrior of Hallownest and is confident in her role; she’ll protect those she cares about with her life if necessary.

I see her as not having an American accent. She rolls her R’s and possibly even has a hint of a French accent instead: for example, when saying ’Hallownest’, she’d miss out the H, saying ‘’Allownest’ instead.

Hollow is Ghoncl’s oldest brother. He is constantly anxious and speaks with a stutter in most of his lines, feeling his emotions more strongly than most. He’s scared of his younger brother and most other bugs, and looks to Hornet for protection.

Although I see him with a British accent, I’m open to any interpretation of his voice.

Seer is an old stoner moth and Ghoncl’s adoptive grandmother. She is mischievous and a sort of ‘cool grandma’.

This means that you must sound like an elderly woman. In the above video, within the timestamp 0:51-0:56 is her younger voice. Please do not imitate this part, only her elderly voice!

In some of her lines, she will say the phrases “aaaangh” and “mele moh”. These are based on the phrases she utters in-game, which can be found at the timestamps 0:01-0:06 and 0:07-0:08 respectively.

Quirrel

Quirrel is an apprentice at the Teacher’s Archives, serving under his teacher and adoptive mother Monomon. He is quiet, brainy and studious, and does not use drugs. He has a tendency to be frightened easily, and is not fed very often by Monomon due to her forgetfulness. Nonetheless, he is kind, polite, and genuine.

Whilst emulating the slight quirks of his voice in this clip, I would love it if you added a British accent to him too.

Herrah is Hornet’s mother and is the queen of Deepnest. She’s also a stripper, drug user, and smoker. Herrah is very forward and promiscuous, not being afraid to ask others for what she wants - including the king of Hallownest.

The Pale King

The Pale King, ‘PK’ for short, is the king of Hallownest. He is authoritative, stern, and irritable. Although he maintains a good public image, PK secretly cares more about his ego than his family or kingdom, refusing to let anyone steal leadership from him.

When auditioning for PK, I would like you to be commanding and have a deep voice. He is a very powerful god and knows it: please try to reflect his ego in your performance.

Monomon is a scientist and teacher at the Teacher’s Archives, her home. She is very motherly towards her apprentice, Quirrel, whom she picked up off the street as a child. She acts as a typical inquisitive scientist would, eager to try out new experiments and remedies.

The Radiance

The Radiance is the proud, forgotten former ruler of Hallownest. In order to get revenge on the Pale King for stealing her kingdom - as well as on her subjects who forgot about her - she seeks to use a special type of smokable plant to mind control them. She is dramatic and very intimidating, yet is still under the influence of her own drugs just like many of the bugs in Hallownest.

When auditioning for her, you should imitate a posh British accent, one that a middle-aged ruler would have. She should sound authoritative and commanding, with a sing-song tone to her voice when she is mocking the characters.

Lurien is the patron saint of the capital city of Hallownest, and is a massive suck-up to the king. He‘s also a bit of a creep - a sex pest - and is obsessed with bondage. Despite being in a position of high status, he’s very pathetic.

Lurien’s voice should sound weedy, high-pitched, and adoring when he speaks to the king. He is eager to agree to anything the king requests of him, in hopes of one day being able to…enact his fantasies out on him.

  • Doubt crept into his mind like crabs. He didn’t want to go against the word of his mentor, but there was a sinister undertone in Ase’s cave that he couldn’t quite place. 

  • How could they convince her that they were on her side now, after the onslaught from the knights and the beasts? For the first time, Ghoncl felt his own emotions override his baked mind, and despair settled deep in his heart. If the Radiance destroyed Hallownest, he’d never share a blunt with his dear friends ever again.
